ABB keen to expand in India via the merger and acquisition route

The Hindu Business Line reported that power equipment and automation major ABB is exploring the option of expanding its footprint in India using the merger and acquisition route.

Mr Ulrich Spiesshofer CEO of ABB said that in all businesses and markets where ABB is present, it is looking at capital deployment for merger and acquisitions and India is definitely one of the areas. He said that if an acquisition happens it could be for a local product for the Indian market.

Mr Spiesshofer said that t in infrastructure and utilities space, significant investments are being made in India. ABB is completing a power grid project, which will bring 6 GW of hydropower from the Himalayas into Central India.

On the prospects in the industrial scale solar sector in India, Spiesshofer said that half of the solar inverter in the sector has been installed by ABB. The company has a fully localised value chain for the solar inverter business. The ramp up of solar capacity is very fast and would expect a double-digit growth rate in that sector.

He said that for the Make in India programme launched by Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi, ABB is well positioned to work with the government.

Aibel and ABB join forces on wind farms

oedigital.com reported that ABB and Aibel have agreed a strategic partnership to deliver state-of-the-art offshore wind integration solutions. ABB will focus on its high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, while Aibel will take turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) responsibility for the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the offshore platforms.

The partners will collaborate on the design, engineering and optimization of offshore wind connections. The integration of power generated by offshore wind farms into national electrical grids requires complex engineering. A key part is the conversion of power from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) for low-loss transmission, often over long distances, to connect remote offshore wind farms to the mainland grid.

This DC power is subsequently converted back to AC once on land and then distributed for consumption. The HVDC system incorporates sophisticated technology to ensure the optimum integration of intermittent renewables and control of power flows. The offshore part of the HVDC system is housed on a specially designed platform.

HVDC remains the technology of choice for transmitting large amounts of power, over long distances, efficiently and reliably and is ideal for the integration of remote renewable energy sources like offshore wind.

ABB, Schneider Electric bid for General Electric unit - Sources

According to people familiar with the matter, European engineering groups ABB Ltd and Schneider Electric SE are competing for General Electric Co's industrial solutions division, which could fetch as much as $3 billion. The divestiture would represent a key step by GE to focus on its core businesses and improve its operational performance, amid pressure from Nelson Peltz's activist hedge fund Trian Fund Management.

The sources said that ABB and Schneider Electric are through to the second round of bidding for GE's industrial solutions business, a provider of primarily electrical equipment. Schneider Electric is looking for a partner to break up the business should its bid prevail, in order to address any antitrust concerns.

According to the sources, private equity firms, including KKR & Co LP, Clayton Dubilier & Rice LLC, Warburg Pincus LLC and Onex Corp, are also in the running.

The sources asked not to be identified because details of the sale process are confidential. Schneider Electric declined to comment, while GE, ABB, KKR, Clayton Dubilier & Rice, Warburg Pincus and Onex did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

GE reported quarterly sales and adjusted earnings results on Friday that beat analysts estimates, but its shares fell on concerns about some of its industrial businesses.

The maker of jet engines, power plants and other industrial equipment also reported a negative $1.6 billion in cash flow from industrial operating activities compared with a negative $600 million it expected for the quarter due to a $1.3 billion increase in working capital and the timing of bills to customers.

Hallo Jonas,

Zeer gemene vent. Dat zie je al aan de ogen

ABB in talks to buy out L&T’s electrical business

ET reported that ABB, the Swedish-Swiss multinational, is in discussions with Larsen & Toubro to acquire its electrical and automation division. The division that generated revenues of INR 4,650 crore and operating profit of a little over INR 700 crore in 2016-17 is expected to be valued at INR 14,000-18,000 crore. ABB owns 75 per cent in ABB India, its locally listed arm, and the acquisition will help the Zurich-headquartered firm consolidate its position in the country. The ABB Group has a market capitalisation of USD 57 billion and revenues of USD 35.5 billion.

ABB and L&T both declined to say anything about the discussions, with the spokespersons of the companies saying they do not comment on speculation and rumour.

A person aware of the transaction said L&T was seeking a valuation of Rs 18,000 crore for the entire business, which includes the Indian operations as well as subsidiaries in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. ABB has offered over INR 14,000 crore, and discussions are on to arrive at a final figure.

L&T looks for strategic investor
The second person aware of the transaction said L&T wanted to sell the division to a strategic investor and not a private equity player, as it felt the former would pay more.

Depending upon the valuation, L&T will either divest its entire holding or retain a minority stake that will be sold later, he added. In the past, too, L&T had tried to sell the electrical and automation business, as it looked to prune its portfolio and exit non-core areas. But negotiations with suitors such as Eaton Corporation failed due to a variety of reasons.

Company watchers say prospects of a successful transaction are brighter this time around because the division’s plants have been segregated from the parent and real estate has been clearly demarcated at all locations.

A senior official in the knows “Earlier, this was a big problem for arriving at a proper valuation. While declining to comment on the transaction, the ABB spokesman said the company had been investing in India for decades. We continuously upgrade or add factories and production lines or new products, technologies, etc, at an average capex of USD 100 million per annum in such various forms. Even when we consolidate operations, we continue to invest in improving our facilities, adding lines for our factories while cost-optimising existing lines.”

ABB teams up with Northvolt on Europe's biggest battery plant
Published on Fri, 29 Sep 2017

Reuters reported that Swiss engineering group ABB has joined Northvolt's project to build Europe's largest lithium-ion battery factory in Sweden to cater for expected demand growth for electric cars.

Northvolt aims to reduce reliance on batteries from China and South Korea as European carmakers come under increasing pressure to cut vehicle emissions.

Batteries are the biggest single cost of an electric car and VW has called for the creation of a European supplier to compete with dominant Asian players such as Panasonic, LG Chem and China's CATL.

The agreement between ABB and Northvolt covers a supply and technology partnership as well as collaboration on research and product development. ABB Technology Ventures (ATV) will support the initial phase of the project with a 10 million euro (USD 11.8 million) investment.

Former Tesla executive Peter Carlsson's Northvolt wants the Swedish plant to rival the scale of the US electric carmaker's Gigafactory in the Nevada desert, targeting annual cell production equivalent to 32 gigawatt-hours by 2023.

ABB said in a statement that the factory is expected to start production in 2020. A demonstration line will be ready by 2019.

Carlsson's vision comes against the backdrop of automakers such as BMW, Daimler, VW and Renault-Nissan all planning a rapid ramp-up in electric car production in the coming years.

VW, for instance, plans to invest more than 20 billion euros in zero-emission vehicles by 2030 to challenge pioneer Tesla in creating a mass market.

Mr Carlsson told a press conference on Tuesday that between 80 million euros and 100 million euros is needed to fund the Swedish factory's pre-production line. That represents the first tranche of a total USD 4 billion in fundraising targeted in March.

More deals are expected in the near future, Carlsson said on Tuesday that "I can't say exactly when we will announce them, but we are in a number of different parallel discussions.”

ABB sets out electric, digital, connected approach for shipping
Published on Fri, 17 Nov 2017

With this new approach, ABB focuses on harnessing the full potential of its power, control and automation solutions through a program of digital integration that will bring about a step change in vessel and fleet management. The automotive industry’s wider adoption of hybrid electric systems and autonomous control sets the stage for the anticipated developments in the maritime industry. Based on greater efficiency and sustainability, electric propulsion will become a maritime imperative rather than an alternative. Electric power plants on board vessels optimize fuel consumption, maximize operational flexibility and allow for new energy sources, such as batteries and fuel cells. There is already evidence of this in place. Last week, ABB announced the delivery of the first fuel cell system for Royal Caribbean.

ABB modernization adds 20 years’ service life to Canadian icebreakers

The modernization of CCGS Pierre Radisson has been successfully completed in an upgrade program that will ultimately cover 10 ships in the Canadian Coast Guard fleet. ABB has successfully concluded the first modernization on a Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) icebreaker, installing the latest hardware and software onboard the 38-year-old CCGS Pierre Radisson as part of the complete upgrade to the ship’s propulsion power distribution system that entailed the installation of twelve new DC-Drives and complete Propulsion Control System. The contract includes the option to amend the modernizations of two other ships in the CCG fleet, CCGS Des Groseilliers and CCGS Amundsen, both of which have clocked up more than 30 years of service.

Ultimately the project also kicked off a fleet life extension program that will see ABB upgrading 10 of the CCG’s 13 High Endurance Multi-Tasked Vessels as well as Heavy and Medium Icebreakers, which conduct major search and rescue operations and play a vital role in keeping the shipping lanes of northern Canada ice free. The upgrades will take place in succession between now and 2020 while the vessels are afloat and docked at their homeports, in partnership with a domestic specialist in electrical systems integration.

Mr Nathalie Pilon, President ABB in Canada, said: “We are delighted the Government of Canada selected ABB to support the Canadian Coast Guard in a project of this magnitude and importance for the nation’s maritime infrastructure and we look forward to building upon and continuing a longstanding cooperative relationship that will safeguard the fleet for many years to come. Investment in the icebreaking segment has grown in recent times. Reflecting its long history of working with icebreakers, ABB stands at the forefront of this regeneration.”

Modernization of CCGS Pierre Radisson was needed because the original power system, installed 38 years ago, was approaching end of life. While the upgrade will see the vessel retain its existing control arrangement of six AC alternators with rectifiers to supply direct current to the motors through upgraded breakers and contactors, the installation of the new ABB Drives will improve availability and extend endurance, allowing the ship to spend more time at sea.

Specifically, ABB fitted twin AC/DC Diesel-Electric propulsion systems for greater redundancy, with each featuring a DC electric motor connected directly to the vessel’s propeller. ABB also took the opportunity to attach digital sensors to a variety of onboard equipment to provide its shore-based expert engineers with a virtual presence on board the ship to help diagnose problems at any time. ABB’s Remote Diagnostic Service will significantly improve maintainability and contribute to reduced vessel down time.

Mr Juha Koskela, Managing Director of ABB’s Marine and Ports business unit, said: “When CCGS Pierre Radisson was constructed in the late 1970s, ship to shore connectivity was mostly limited to radio. The Internet as we know it today simply did not exist. Today ships are digitally tethered to shore by satellite, which enables greater shore-side involvement and flexibility in vessel operations. The pivot to digital promises innumerable opportunities for the CCG’s icebreakers to operate safely and perform their missions more effectively.”

Mr Koskela said that “We are proud to be working closely with the Canadian Coast Guard to help them maintain safe and reliable vessel operations for years to come. CCG vessels operate in harsh environments carrying out a variety of important missions year-round. By delivering improved vessel endurance together with round-the-clock Remote Diagnostic Service, we can support them in fulfilling those duties.”

ABB 07 feb
24,73 +0,45 (+1,85%)

ABB sees brighter outlook for 2018 after fourth quarter net profit drops

ABB gave a brighter outlook for 2018, saying that it saw improving markets around the world after its overhaul hit the engineering group's fourth-quarter earnings. The maker of power transmission equipment and industrial robots said net profit fell 8% to USD 393 million during the three months ended Dec. 31, missing the average estimate of USD 424 million in a Reuters poll of analysts. The figures were hit by a fourth-quarter charge of USD 76 million from restructuring its business.

Its revenues rose 3% to USD 9.28 billion, short of the poll estimate of USD 9.5 billion, while orders rose to a weaker-than-expected USD 8.48 billion. It proposed raising its dividend by two cents to 0.78 Swiss francs per share.

Chief Executive Ulrich Spiesshofer said the results showed the "dampening effects of our massive transformation". The company spent much of 2017 reorganising as it battled a long-term downturn in industries like mining and oil and gas, where low prices have stalled customers' investments.

ABB responded by cutting costs, simplifying its structures and ditching fringe businesses like the high-risk and low-margin engineering, procurement and construction business it spun off in December.

But Spiesshofer was more positive about the future, saying the simplified company was now ready to benefit from an upswing in many markets.

Small orders worth under USD 15 million and a signal of underlying demand grew for the fourth quarter in a row, registering a 9% rise during the October to December period.

He said in a statement that "The momentum we have built in 2017 positions us for profitable growth as the global markets are improving.”

ABB's view contrasted with industrial rivals General Electric and Siemens, which have announced major overhauls after being hit by weak demand from the power and gas sector.
