Siemens Is delaying signing USD 20 billion power deal with Saudi Arabia

Bloomberg reported that Siemens AG Chief Executive Officer Joe Kaeser’s decision to skip an investment conference in Saudi Arabia this week has delayed the signing of a power-plant contract that could ultimately be worth as much as USD 20 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

Mr Kaeser was scheduled to sign the agreement while attending the Future Investment Initiative conference in Saudi Arabia this week, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks aren’t public. The project is expected to go ahead despite the snub, although at a later date, they said. The prospective deal sheds light on the hard choices facing global companies trying to capture business in countries with poor human-rights records. Kaeser was one of the last high-profile CEOs to pull out of FII, which was meant to highlight Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s efforts to diversify the Gulf kingdom’s economy. Participation at the event, which started Tuesday in Riyadh, has become a litmus test for corporate chieftains following the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi Arabia showcased international deals worth about USD 50 billion at the forum, as tries to put the best possible gloss on a flagship summit tainted by international outrage over the killing of Khashoggi, a critic of the government who disappeared on Oct. 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Siemens halveert winst, maar koopt aandelen in

Gepubliceerd op 8 nov 2018 om 08:20 | Views: 967

SIEMENS AG NA 07 nov
102,90 0,00 (0,00%)

EU slams Alstom-Siemens rail mega-merger plans

Politico reported that Franco-German ambitions for a European train champion to challenge China look increasingly likely to be derailed after Brussels set out a long string of objections to a merger between Siemens and Alstom. Brussels has reached a preliminary conclusion that the deal is “incompatible” with the internal market, according to two people who have seen the European Commission’s list of concerns about the merger, which the companies received at the end of last month. The two people told POLITICO on Tuesday that the EU’s statement of objections — or formal charge sheet — makes clear that Brussels would have to block the tie-up unless the two rail companies offer significant remedies in core parts of their businesses across Europe, particularly regarding high-speed trains, signals and control systems, regional networks, and metro systems.

The European Commission’s tough stance toward the creation of a “Railbus” — in the mold of aviation heavyweight Airbus —comes as a blow to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who grumbled in June that EU competition law is holding Europe back in its attempt to forge global champions that could challenge their Chinese counterparts.

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire last month expressed confidence that the concerns raised by the Commission could be addressed, and told POLITICO: “We want to build one of the most important world leaders in railway construction.”

Siemens wins further Panama gas fired plant deal

Siemens has won a long-term service and maintenance agreement for a gas-fired power plant in Panama. The deal comes after Siemens earlier this year secured the contract to provide six of its SGT-800 gas turbines to the new project marking the first order for this type of unit from Panama. The service and maintenance agreement was signed with independent power producer Shanghai Gorgeous Group, through its subsidiary Sinolam Smarter Energy, which is the Panamanian end user of the project.

Siemens’ said its service and maintenance programme “will provide a high degree of availability and performance through pro-active planning, based on continuous monitoring and remote support. It represents another milestone in Siemens continued support of the energy infrastructure in Latin America.”

Mr Tim Frace, vice-president of Siemens Power Generation Services in Latin America, said that "As Panama works to strengthen its energy infrastructure, the continued reliability of Sinolam Smarter Energy power plants is of vital importance.”

The plant will operate on liquefied natural gas and commissioning of the power block is due in 2020.

Siemens supplies world's first lithium-ion battery solution for offshore drilling rig in the North Sea's Nova Field

The long-term sustainability of the offshore oil and gas sector is predicated on reducing costs and minimizing projects' environmental impacts. Drawing off its extensive experience in the electrification of marine assets, Siemens has taken a significant step on the way to helping the industry achieve those goals by supplying the world's first energy storage solution (ESS) to an offshore drilling rig. BlueVault™, Siemens advanced lithium-ion battery-based solution, will be installed on Northern Drilling Ltd.'s West Mira offshore drilling rig that will operate in the North Sea's Nova Field, approximately 120 km northwest of Bergen. West Mira is a sixth-generation, ultra-deepwater semi-submersible designed by Moss Maritime and will be the world's first modern drilling rig to operate a low-emission hybrid (diesel-electric) power plant using lithium-ion energy storage. The solution consists of four converter-battery systems for a total maximum power of six megawatts.

Mr Bjørn Einar Brath, Head of Offshore Solutions in Siemens, said that "The integration of energy storage with the power supply and distribution system of a drilling rig represents an important step towards improving the environmental sustainability of the offshore oil and gas industry. Offshore rigs have highly variable power consumption for drilling and dynamic positioning. By incorporating energy storage, it is possible to reduce the runtime of diesel engines and also keep them operating on an optimized combustion level. This ultimately leads to lower emissions."

The installation of BlueVault on West Mira will result in an estimated 42% reduction in the runtime of on-platform diesel engines, reducing CO¬2 emissions by 15 percent and NOx emissions by 12 percent, which is equivalent to annual emissions from approximately 10,000 automobiles. The batteries will be charged from the rig's diesel-electric generators and used for supplying power during peak load times. In addition, they will serve as backup to prevent blackout situations and provide power to the thrusters in the unlikely event of loss of all running machinery.

Seadrill Norway Operations Ltd. will operate the West Mira rig on behalf of Northern Drilling. Wintershall has contracted the facility for six wells in their Nova field. The contract includes options for early commencement starting in Q3 of 2019, as well as follow-on options. Should all options be exercised, West Mira is expected to be contracted to Wintershall until Q1 2022. In the coming months, Siemens will continue to work closely with Seadrill to ensure that the groundbreaking hybrid power solution meets the performance and reliability requirements of the facility.

The energy storage solution that will be supplied to West Mira is based on field-proven technology, which has been installed in more than 60 marine vessels worldwide, including the world's first electric car ferry, MF Ampere, in Norway. As part of a strategy to continue providing low-emissions solutions for harsh offshore operating environments, Siemens opened a fully robotised and digitalised plant in Norway that will develop and manufacture energy storage technologies for both marine and offshore oil and gas applications.

Siemens to shut turbines service in Texas

Reuters reported that German engineering firm Siemens plans to dismiss about 200 workers at a gas turbines parts and components service center in Houston, Texas, next year due to weaker global demand. The Texas operation will close between late 2019 and 2020, according to the spokesman, who called the decision difficult. In a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission, Siemens also pointed to overcapacity within its network.

Siemens said in September that it would cut 2,900 jobs in Germany to boost the competitiveness of its Power and Gas and Process Industries divisions.

Along with turbine competitors General Electric and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Siemens has faced oversupply and declining sales as demand for gas turbines has plunged. (Reporting by Liz Hampton Editing by Leslie Adler)

Siemens inks USD 78.4 million Wind Turbine Deal in Bosnia

Economic Times reported that wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa signed a 69 million euro (USD 78.4 million) contract on Tuesday to supply Bosnia's biggest power utility EPBiH with wind turbines for a future 48 megawatt (MW) wind farm. Under the contract the company will supply 15 turbines and build the wind park on the Podvelezje plateau near the southern town of Mostar. The deadline to complete the project is 21 months. It will also service the turbines for five years. The total cost of building the wind farm, the first in EPBiH's portfolio, was put at around 83 million euros. It will produce 130 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity, enough to supply 6,500 households.

To help EPBiH proceed with the project, German state-owned development bank KfW lent the utility 65 million euros, while EPBiH will finance the remainder of the cost.

Bosnia generates 60 percent of its electricity from coal-fired power plants and the remainder from hydro-power. It plans to increase the share of renewable energy to 43 percent by 2020.

Several developers are seeking to add around 500 MW in wind capacity in Bosnia over the coming years but only one wind farm has been put into operation so far.
