A beefed-up White House legal team is gearing up to prevent President Trump’s confidential discussions with top advisers from being disclosed to House Democratic investigators and revealed in the special counsel’s long-awaited report, setting the stage for a potential clash between the branches of government.

The strategy to strongly assert the president’s executive privilege on both fronts is being developed under newly arrived White House Counsel Pat Cipollone, who has hired 17 lawyers in recent weeks to help in the effort.

Ik vind het prachtig dat de democraten zich weer zo laten kennen. Mijn hemel wat zijn die linkse mafklappers stom om over de muur zo'n big deal te maken. Geen enkel weldenkend mens kan tegen het bewaken van de grenzen zijn. Ze kunnen nog zoveel flut argumenten en leugens bedenken, maar het volk is niet gek en trapt daar echt niet in. Je kan niet over een dergelijk onderwerp opeens 180 graden draaien, dan neemt niemand je meer serieus. Al zouden ze nu eens met beleid komen ipv tegenwerken dan gaan ze misschien in 2024 weer een kans maken...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A growing proportion of Americans blame President Donald Trump for a partial government shutdown that will cut off paychecks to federal workers this week, though Republicans mostly support his refusal to approve a budget without taxpayer dollars for the U.S.-Mexico border wall, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday.

The national opinion poll, which ran from Jan. 1 to Jan. 7, found that 51 percent of adults believe Trump “deserves most of the blame” for the shutdown, which entered its 18th day on Tuesday. That is up 4 percentage points from a similar poll that ran from Dec. 21 to 25.

Public support for a border wall has shifted considerably over the past few years as it became a centerpiece of the Trump agenda. The poll found that 41 percent of the public supports building additional border fencing, down 12 points from a similar poll that ran in the first week of 2015, as opposition doubled among Democrats.

It also found that only 35 percent of adults in the United States support a congressional spending bill that includes funding for the wall, and 25 percent support Trump’s decision to keep the government closed until Congress approves funding for the wall.

Republicans, however, strongly support Trump’s pursuit of an expanded border wall. They have consistently ranked immigration as their top concern for the country. Seventy-seven percent of Republicans said in the most recent poll that they want additional border fencing, and 54 percent said they support Trump shutting down the government until Congress approves funding for the wall.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online in English throughout the United States. It gathered responses from 2,203 adults, including 722 Republicans and 867 Democrats. The poll has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of 2 percentage points.

But Department of Homeland Security testing of a steel slat prototype proved it could be cut through with a saw, according to a report by DHS.

A photo exclusively obtained by NBC News shows the results of the test after military and Border Patrol experts were instructed to attempt to destroy the barriers with common tools.

The Trump administration directed the construction of eight steel and concrete prototype walls that were built in Otay Mesa, California, just across the border from Tijuana, Mexico. Trump inspected the prototypes in March 2018. He has now settled on a steel slat, or steel bollard, design for the proposed border barrier additions. Steel bollard fencing has been used under previous administrations.

Michael Cohen, his longtime personal lawyer, stated under oath that Trump directed him to violate federal campaign finance law; the state of New York has evidence that Trump and his family have been cheating on their taxes for years; the Trump family’s “persistently illegal conduct” and “repeated and willful self-dealing transactions” have led the New York attorney general to file a lawsuit against the Trump Foundation. Trump is open about his disdain for law. In April, he told an audience in Michigan that “our laws are so corrupt and stupid.”

Trump is also clear about why he is breaking these laws. The entire point of Trump’s campaign to “Make America Great Again” is to lead us back to a time before the civil rights movement, before laws against insider trading, before the New Deal and federal agencies that regulate the commerce of plutocrats. This was an era of white male supremacy. The rich paid no income taxes and there was no minimum wage, so the wealthy lived like royalty. His thinking is akin to the way past activists viewed sit-down strikes. Like these past civil dissenters, Trump views himself as breaking the laws that he doesn’t believe should exist, which includes most of the laws and regulations put in place since the 1930s.

Ik begrijp dat iedere onderbouwde kritiek zo snel mogelijk belachelijk moet worden gemaakt.

Ik begrijp veel. Ik begrijp conservatieven. Ik begrijp de wens om alles te houden zoals het is. Ik begrijp het oorspronkelijke platform van de GOP. Ik begrijp sociaal conservatisme, ik begrijp fiscaal conservatisme.

Wat ik niet begrjp is dat veel van de trump stemmers op het eerste gezicht niets te winnen hebben met die stem. Ik baseer mijn beeld van trump stemmers op wat ik zie aan bumperstickers en bordjes in de tuin. Die zag/zie ik voornamelijk buiten de stad, en in wijken met huizen met roestige Chevy pickups voor de deur.
Ik begrijp dat die mensen Hillary niet wilden. Ik begrijp dat ze niet vrolijk worden van (illegale) immigranten.
Maar ik begrijp absoluut niet waarom ze nu nog steeds in trump geloven.
Objectief gezien is de man een leugenaar. Een bedrieger. Hij maakt dingen stuk. Dat wilden ze graag, maar de dingen die hij stuk maakt raken hen.

Wat weerhoudt hen om toe te geven dat ze een fout hebben gemaakt?

Mevrouw Kanefield maakt dat duidelijk. Daarnaast geeft ze links naar anderen die nog meer licht in de duisternis werpen.

(en ik vind het woord sadopopulism prachtig)
