Steel reinforced 3D prints with new Technique

Continuing on the never-ending adventure of how to make a 3D print stronger, [Brauns CNC] is coming at us with a new technique that involves steel-reinforced 3D printed parts. We’ve seen plenty of methods to create stronger 3D prints, from using carbon fiber filament to simply printing the part in a way that the layers of the print are orthogonal to the direction of force. We’ve even seen casting carbon fiber bars into 3D prints, but of course that will only work with straight parts. [Brauns]’ technique uses steel wire, embedded into the print itself, and from some testing there’s about a 50% increase in strength of the part. The process of embedding a steel cable into a 3D printed part is simply taking apart the model and putting a channel in for the cable. At a specific layer height, the printer is stopped, the steel cable is embedded with the help of a soldering iron, and the printer continues doing its thing.

There’s a slight amount of Gcode hacking to make this happen, and the process of embedding a steel cable into a print is a bit finicky. Still, if you want stronger 3D prints, there are worse ways to do it, and certainly less effective ways of doing it. You can check out the video for this technique below.

3D Printed construction - Apis Cor, residential home in Russia

All 3DP reported that Apis Cor is a San-Francisco-based start-up developing unique mobile construction 3D printers that print structural components (self-supporting walls and partitions). Like most, their concrete 3D printer uses material extrusion technology. They have developed their own material mix, which is an extrudable concrete consisting of cement, sand, geopolymers, and fibers. They prepare the final material mix by mixing the raw materials in a large hopper. This mix is then fed by a pump system to the extruder, which deposits the material.

Their 3D printer has an independent robotic arm which prints the structural components on-site. They intentionally left a small gap between the interior and exterior of walls, where they placed fiberglass reinforcements and sprayed a polyurethane-based mixture for insulation. Once the walls were printed, they removed the printer with the help of a crane to install windows, appliances, and the roof. The entire structure took just 24 hours to complete.

Beste Nobahamas!

Now, with many of these companies in the beginning stages of operation, the question is how they can grow. “There are many that are operational, but they’re still in that early commercial stage,” says Martin. “So they’re proving out their models. And this is really an inflection point, because they’re at a stage where they need investment and partnerships that will ensure their success.”

Partnerships and deals are happening quickly. Both Coke and PepsiCo have signed agreements to buy plastic from Loop Industries, a company that can turn old packaging, carpet, clothing, and even ocean waste into new plastic for use in bottles. Multiple brands have made commitments to start using much more recycled content in the packaging they produce; Evian announced in early 2018 that it would move to 100% recycled packaging by 2025. The challenge is having enough supply to meet that demand, and for that more investment is necessary.

Toekomst HPQ veelbelovend:

HPQ has been trading in a tight range for almost 2 years as we concentrated on everything we have discussed today. With the amount of information and developments going forward, I think this will change.

Heb je deze ook in de port? Nooit echt ingelezen. Veel in samenwerking met PYR.
