Laat dat bod maar komen, ook al zal het op dit moment zeker niet de 17,50 IPO waarde overstijgen.
Dan is TT 15 jaar beursgenoteerd geweest waar slechts verliesgevende prestaties tegenover hebben gestaan voor de reguliere aandeelhouders.

Niet iets om trots op te zijn.

Lyft opens to the public autonomous driving data set from its Level 5 self-driving fleet

Lyft is offering to the public a set of autonomous driving data that it calls the “largest public data set of its kind,” containing over 55,000 3D frames of captured footage hand-labeled by human reviewers, data collected by seven cameras and as many as three lidars depending on the car used, plus a drivable surface map and HD spatial semantic data that corresponds to the captured info to provide context to researchers.

The data set is the work of Lyft Level 5, the division of the ride-hailing company that is responsible for its research and development of self-driving vehicle technology (hence the name, which is borrowed from SAE’s levels of autonomy for cars, with Level 5 being the highest). In a blog post detailing the move, Lyft notes that this part of the company has been working on its hardware and self-driving software for two years and wanted to make public some of the data it has collected in that time in order to “help level the playing field for all researchers interested in autonomous technology.”

Lyft Level 5 EVP of Autonomous Technology Luc Vincent notes in the post that the company is “committed to democratizing access to this tech,” and plans to continue to “release additional data” going forward. Lyft will also host a competition to inspire use of the data, with $25,000 in cash prizes and a presentation plus job interview opportunity at the NeurIPS conference this December.

Mensen ik zou niet klagen, vanaf die 7,50 is het een behoorlijk eind naar de 10,50. We hebben al jaren de 10 niet gezien. Ook ik heb pech en mijn vertrouwen was kapot gemaakt door tomtom management.

Dit is interressant: Hetzelfde idee dat een oliebedrijf bedacht in het verleden: Geef de 3d survey data vrij en schrijf een prijsvraag uit voor de beste boor locatie. Die kwamen uit met een hele succesvolle boor campagne voor een fractie van de research kosten... (Legio studenten die nachtenlang zaten te puzzelen voor noppes... en een paar van hen die met het 1 million dollar prijzengeld maar wat in hun nopjes waren...)

Faurecia en Microsoft gaan samen cockpit ontwikkelen

Toeleverancier Faurecia wil via Microsoft de cockpit 'digitaliseren'.

De Franse toeleverancier Faurecia gaat een samenwerking aan met softwarebedrijf Microsoft voor de ontwikkeling van netwerkdiensten in auto’s. Dat meldt Faurecia vandaag. Het gaat onder andere om digitale services in de cockpit, die werken op het Microsoft Connected Vehicle-platform. Voor cloudtoepassingen wordt gewerkt met Azure.

De bedrijven zeggen gezamenlijk de cockpit van de toekomst te willen ontwikkelen, waarbij de auto in verbinding staat met huis, kantoor en telefoon. “Consumenten verwachten een digitale continuïteit tussen huis, kantoor en auto”, aldus ceo Patrick Koller van Faurecia. “In samenwerking met Microsoft kunnen we aan deze behoefte voldoen.”

De nieuwe cockpit moet tijdens de eerstvolgende CES worden getoond, die van 7-10 januari 2020 in Las Vegas plaatsvindt.

Faurecia maakte vanmorgen ook zijn halfjaarcijfers bekend. Het bedrijf noteerde een omzet van 8,9 miljard euro: 0,2 procent lager dan in het eerste halfjaar van 2018. De operating income kwam uit op 645 miljoen euro, een daling van 0,4 procent. Faurecia wijt dit vooral aan de tegenvallende Chinese automarkt.

Faurecia is onder andere leverancier van interieurdelen zoals stoelen. Autofabrikant PSA is met een belang van 46,3 procent de grootste aandeelhouder. Het bedrijf werkt op het gebied van autonome auto-technologie samen met ZF.

Velodyne Acquires HD Mapping Startup Mapper.ai to Advance its Lidar-based Driver Assist Software

Velodyne Lidar Inc announced on Monday that it acquired the high-definition mapping and localization software, as well as the intellectual property assets from San Francisco-based startup Mapper.ai. Mapper.ai specializes in creating custom, high-definition maps for its clients working on autonomous driving. The company claims it can build a map of anywhere in the world in as little as 24 hours.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Velodyne is best known for its pioneering work on lidar. With its acquisition of Mapper.ai, the company is now moving into the software space, developing advanced driver assist systems using lidar technology.

Mapper.ai's highly-detailed mapping and localization technology will enable Velodyne to accelerate development of its Vella software, which the company claims is a breakthrough advanced driver assistance solution based on the company's Velarray lidar sensor.

"Velodyne has both created the market for high-fidelity automotive lidar and established itself as the leader. We have been Velodyne customers for years and have already integrated their lidar sensors into easily deployable solutions for scalable high-definition mapping," said Dr. Nikhil Naikal, founder and CEO of Mapper, who is joining Velodyne. "We are excited to use our technology to speed up Velodyne's lidar-centric software approach to ADAS."

Velodyne's Vella software, when combined with the company's lidar, supports advanced automotive safety system (ADAS) technologies, such as Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

The high-definition (HD) maps created by Mapper.ai are crucial for helping autonomous vehicles (AVs) operate safely. A map for an autonomous car is different from the maps drivers use for navigation. These maps offer a much higher level of detail, with centimeter-level accuracy of road lanes to keep an autonomous vehicle centered in a lane and perform other driving maneuvers like a human driver.

Velodyne says its lidar technology is precise enough to support high-speed, highway autonomous driving. The company's Velarray lidar is the first solid-state lidar sensor that is embeddable and small enough to fit behind a vehicle's windshield. Mass production of the Velarray lidar sensor is scheduled to being in 2020.

Along with acquiring all of Mapper.ai's intellectual property, Velodyne announced that Mapper.ai's entire leadership and engineering teams will join Velodyne, bolstering the company's large and growing software development team.

The new talent will augment the current software team of engineers working on Vella software, which will accelerate Velodyne's production of more advanced ADAS systems for self-driving vehicles.

"The goal in the automotive market is to make transportation safer. By adding Vella software to our broad portfolio of lidar technology, Velodyne is poised to revolutionize ADAS performance and safety," said Anand Gopalan, CTO at Velodyne. "Expanding our team to develop Vella is a giant step towards achieving our goal of mass producing an ADAS solution that dramatically improves roadway safety. Mapper technology gives us access to some key algorithmic elements and accelerates our development timeline. Together, our sensors and software will allow powerful lidar-based safety solutions to be available on every vehicle."

Velodyne was founded in 1983 as Velodyne Acoustics, making high-end audio speakers and subwoofers. Founder and CEO, David Hall, invented the company's real-time surround view lidar systems in 2005. Hall's lidar breakthrough revolutionized perception and autonomy for automotive, mapping, robotics, and security.

Velodyne spun off its lidar division as a separate company in 2016 called Velodyne Lidar. The company's lidar is being used by dozens of companies that are working on autonomous driving technology, including automaker Ford Motor Company.

Lidar, which is an acronym for "light detecting and ranging," has become an essential sensor in the development of driverless cars. Velodyne's commercial lidar sensors were used on the first self-driving cars developed by Google over a decade ago.

Lidar works by bouncing laser beams off objects and measuring the time it takes for the laser beams to reflect back to the sensor. This generates a lidar "point cloud" which can be used to create a 360 degree, 3D rendering of the environment around a vehicle.

Lidar can be used to detect objects such as nearby vehicles, trees, buildings, pedestrians and bicyclists. When combined with perception software, cameras and radar the lidar acts as the "eyes" of a self-driving car.

In addition to moving into ADAS, Velodyne will incorporate Mapper.ai's technology into lidar solutions for other applications, including autonomous vehicles, last-mile autonomous delivery services, security, smart cities, robotics, and drones

Mapping.ai is een kleine start-up met mogelijk een disruptief innovatief concept voor het ontwikkelen en (ik neem aan ook) onderhouden van HD-maps. Maar daarmee ben je er nog niet. Ik vermoed dat Velodyne eerst probeert een groot marktaandeel te krijgen in de ADAS markt.

Het bewijst wel weer dat start-ups in de HD-mapping Market het niet zelfstandig redden.

Velodyne staat al een tijdje op mijn watch lijstje. En het goede nieuws is ze gaan waarschijnlijk binnenkort naar de beurs!

Ze redden zich juist heel goed, want worden opgekocht door grotere bedrijven. Of nu cashen of kans dat het nooit wat wordt t.o.v. de grotere spelers denken ze waarschijnlijk.
Grote kans dat ze zelf ook een interessante baan aangeboden krijgen bij het bedrijf waardoor ze zijn overgenomen.

Allemaal nog erg kleinschalig en fantasierijke out-of-the box ideeën. Maar dit soort start-ups houdt HG wel scherp.

He developed his passion for mapping while working with CMU’s Tartan Racing team that won the DARPA Urban Challenge in 2007 and honed his expertise in high-precision navigation while working at Bosch Research and subsequently at Flyby Media, which was acquired by Apple in 2015.

Dr. Alonso Patron Perez is a founder and CTO at mapper, where he leads a team of computer vision and machine learning experts in developing a scalable machine mapping solution for fully and semi-autonomous vehicles.

Prior to mapper, his focus was on 3D reconstruction, augmented reality, structured learning, and SLAM through cutting edge technology projects at Flyby Media, and Google’s Project Tango.
