Fox. News is worried about facing legal consequences for their misleading coverage of the coronavirus, according to Vanity Fair's Gabriel Sherman, an expert on all things Fox News.

In an interview on MSNBC today, Sherman told host Joy Reid that Fox fears being held legally accountable for the slew of lies it reported about the coronavirus pandemic:

It's not in -- They are in the middle of it with all of the other New Yorkers. We saw Trish Regan, who had a show on Fox Business, come out and essentially just label it all a fraud. She's now no longer there. I don't know what happened with her show but I guess it's not airing anymore. You've had Fox anchors who are going, or as likely as anyone who is on this panel to know someone who gets sick with COVID-19. It's interesting to have to watch them have to confront reality, that as you say, is deadly reality, that they can't cover for Trump on this. There's no way they can keep doing it. I wonder if the same sort of dynamic is going to happen with Sinclair, which is ten times -- it's Fox times ten -- and in your traffic and weather together and they've tried to also spin things in his favor. They do add commentary from people like former Trump officials. How are they handling it?

GABRIEL SHERMAN: Yea. I mean, this is the question, what's more pernicious or deceptive about Sinclair is that their local newscasts are not labeled as a Sinclair channel. You don't know that it has a right-wing ideology behind the owners of the local news station, so you're absorbing it as if it's just straight network news. I just want to get back to the Fox of it all real quick. When I've been talking to Fox insiders over the last few days, there's a real concern inside the network that their early downplaying of the coronavirus actually exposes Fox News to potential legal action by viewers who maybe were misled and actually have died from this.

I've heard Trish Regan's being taken off the air is, you know, reflective of this concern that Fox News is in big trouble by downplaying this virus and The New York Times reported days ago that the Murdoch family was privately taking the coronavirus seriously. The Murdochs, of course, own Fox News. So, they were taken personal steps to protect themselves while anchors like Trish Regan and Sean Hannity were telling viewers that it's a hoax and putting themselves in potentially mortal danger. So I think this is a case where Fox's coverage, if it actually winds up being proved that people died because of it, this is a new terrain in terms of Fox being possibly held liable for their actions.

JOY REID: Interesting. It will be interesting to see how long they let Dr. Oz keep going on and on and on with the things that he's been saying on that network given what you just said.

De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump verwacht de piek in het aantal dagelijkse doden in de VS als gevolg van het coronavirus over twee weken. De regels voor het behouden van ‘sociale afstand’ tot elkaar blijven daarom van kracht tot 30 april. Dat heeft de president vannacht bekendgemaakt tijdens een persconferentie in het Witte Huis. Eerder meldde hij nog dat het in de VS met Pasen gewoon weer ‘business as usual’ zou zijn.

In de Verenigde Staten zijn inmiddels 2.479 mensen gestorven aan de gevolgen van het coronavirus, ruim 142.000 Amerikanen zijn geïnfecteerd. Dat blijkt uit de laatste tellingen van de Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Meer dan 1.000 mensen stierven in de hard getroffen staat New York.

Trump zei tot slot dat er dinsdag een belangrijke aankondiging komt over de plannen en strategie van de regering voor de toekomst. ,,Dinsdag zullen we deze plannen afronden en een samenvatting van onze bevindingen, ondersteunende gegevens en strategie aan het Amerikaanse volk verstrekken.’’

Nederland klopte (te) laat aan bij Philips

AMSTERDAM - Nederland trok pas twee weken geleden aan de bel bij Philips voor beademingsapparaten. Op dat moment was de voorraad van het bedrijf al aan andere landen verkocht.

Van Houten wilde niet zeggen of Nederland ’te laat’ was. Wel zei hij: „Ik denk dat heel de wereld niet scherp genoeg naar China heeft gekeken. Men dacht dat het wel mee zou vallen.” In China zijn begin dit jaar veel beademingsapparaten geleverd. Daarna volgde een grote vraag uit Italië. „En toen was de voorraad op.”

Afgelopen zaterdag heeft Philips overigens nog honderd beademingsapparaten aan ons land geleverd. Er zijn er duizend besteld.

Het bedrijf probeert de bouw van nieuwe machines te versnellen.

De beademingsapparaten zijn hard nodig op de vol lopende intensive care-afdelingen van ziekenhuizen.

Half april liggen er mogelijk 2500 coronapatiënten op de IC”, zei Jacco Wallinga van het RIVM gisteren nog.

Van Houten zegt ’slapeloze nachten’ te hebben van de crisis. „Niet alleen ik, maar ook de medewerkers die dit produceren. Die voelen dit persoonlijk. De mensen die dit uitleveren weten dat er levens van afhangen. Dat is echt heel belangrijk.”

De VS lijkt nu uit de hand te lopen, en Trump draait wat bij zodat de maand april nu helemaal wordt genomen om het rustig aan te doen. Aan de andere kant, wie gelooft die man nog tegenwoordig? Hij veranderd elke dag van gedacht maar er komt niks zinnigs uit. Gisteren zag ik volle stranden in Florida, mensen heel dicht bij elkaar en zo zijn er nog zoveel signalen dat de VS het allemaal niet zo serieus neemt wat betreft het houden van afstand.

En daar komt straks bij: recessie/depressie, fors duurdere healthcare en snijden in SocSec en Medicaid. En beelden van duizenden grafkisten, koelwagens achter ziekenhuizen voor de doden....

Dacht even dat je het over het RIVM/Rutte had omdat je het hebt over steeds veranderen van gedachten en overvolle stranden.
