Baker Hughes Bags LNG Turbomachinery Order from Qatar Petroleum

Baker Hughes announced an order with longtime partner Qatar Petroleum to supply multiple main refrigerant compressors for Qatar Petroleum’s North Field East project, executed by Qatargas. The total award is part of four LNG mega trains, representing 33 million tons per annum of additional capacity, which will increase Qatar’s total liquefied natural gas production capacity from 77 MTPA to 110 MTPA and help to propel the Gulf nation to global LNG production leadership by 2025. This order is among the largest LNG deals secured by Baker Hughes in the past five years, for both MTPA and equipment awarded.

The order reinforces more than two decades of trust and successful turbomachinery collaboration between Baker Hughes, Qatar Petroleum and Qatargas. With Qatargas already operating six existing LNG mega trains driven by Frame 9E gas turbine refrigerant compressors provided by Baker Hughes, the NFE project underscores the leadership of Baker Hughes LNG technology in the Gulf region and for the world’s most complex LNG projects.

“This milestone deal illustrates the continued strength of Baker Hughes’ partnership with Qatar Petroleum, which began 25 years ago upon our delivery of the first LNG train in Qatar,” said Lorenzo Simonelli, chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes. “As we look ahead to the next two decades, in almost any scenario natural gas will be a key transition fuel, and likely a destination fuel for a lower carbon future. Building on our track record of delivering proven, reliable and highly efficient LNG technology, we remain committed to taking energy forward in Qatar for more years to come.”

As part of the company’s commitment to support customers in decarbonizing their operations, Baker Hughes has continuously invested in developing technology that enables customers to reduce emissions, enhance performance and optimize operations. The NFE project will feature the latest compression technology to reduce 60,000 tons of CO2 per train each year without any reduction in LNG production, representing a ~5 percent decrease versus previous technologies. The compression trains will also be produced using the latest manufacturing techniques, minimizing raw material and emission-intensive processes to reduce CO2 emissions during production by up to 10 percent.

Each MRC train will consist of three Frame 9E DLN Ultra Low NOx gas turbines and six centrifugal compressors across four LNG “mega trains” for a total scope of supply of 12 gas turbines to drive 24 centrifugal compressors. Packaging, manufacturing and testing of the gas turbine/compressor trains will take place at Baker Hughes’ facilities in Florence and Massa, Italy.

The North Field is the world’s single largest non-associated natural gas field. The NFE project, owned by Qatar Petroleum and operated by Qatargas, is the first phase of the North Field LNG Expansion Project, announced in 2017, and will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 MTPA to 110 MTPA, which accounts for an LNG production capacity increase of approximately 43 percent. First gas from the Expansion Project is expected to be produced by the end of 2025. The second phase of the North Field LNG Expansion Project, called the North Field South project (NFS), will further increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 110 MTPA to 126 MTPA.

Qatargas is entrusted with executing the NFE project on behalf of Qatar Petroleum. As the world’s premier LNG company, Qatargas has an established history in delivering such major projects and in operating various onshore and offshore facilities in the North Field with a high degree of reliability and operational excellence. The project is in line with Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which aims for more sustainable development by 2030.

Fire Hits Hammerfest LNG Operations for 12 Months

Equinor announced that surveys of the damage after the fire at Hammerfest LNG on 28 September indicates that the LNG plant will be closed for up to 12 months for repairs. In addition to damage caused by the fire on the air intake on one of the plant's five power turbines, large amounts of seawater from the extinguishing have damaged other auxiliary systems such as electrical equipment and cables in the plant.

It is the scope of work of this consequential damage that are considered the most extensive and the duration of the shutdown will depend on the delivery time of necessary equipment. Progress will also be affected by the current restrictions related to the Covid 19 virus.

Equinor, as well as the PSA and the police have started independent investigations of the fire.

Total SA is DE groene Oil Major.

Dat lijkt me duidelijk.

Gazprom Neft LNG Bunkering Vessel Set Afloat

Russia’s first cargo and passenger ship-to-ship LNG-bunkering vessel has been set afloat, shipyard specialists having completed the main stage in the vessel’s construction, including assembling the hull and installing LNG fuel tanks and other auxiliary systems, in record time. The vessel has been moved to dock for final installation of navigation systems and controls, and installation of key equipment rooms. Sea trials are planned for spring 2021.

The LNG-bunkering vessel, named in honour of the great Russian chemist and researcher Dmitry Mendeleev, will join Gazprom Neft’s fleet in the second half of 2021. This new vessel will provide transportation and bunkering of low-tonnage LNG fuel at ports in the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea — including St Petersburg, Ust-Luga and Primorsk.

Designing the Gazprom Neft LNG-bunkering vessel has involved cutting-edge shipbuilding and LNG storage and transportation technologies, with equipment being fully compliant with international MARPOL Convention standards and ECO-S environmental certification. The vessel has been designed on the basis of “zero emissions”, with its propulsion system fuelled by LNG stripping-gas.

The vessel is 100 metres in length, 19 metres wide, and can transport up to 5,800 m3 of liquid natural gas. Its Arc4 ice-class reinforced hull means it can navigate one-year-old ice of up to 80 cm thick independently, while its integrated digital system means it can be controlled by just one crew member, directly from the navigation bridge.

Gazprom Reviews LNG Projects

The Gazprom Board of Directors took note of the information about the ongoing implementation of the liquefied natural gas production and supply projects. It was highlighted that the new coronavirus pandemic has had a negative impact on the long-term outlook for the global LNG industry, and the forecast for the commissioning of LNG production capacities worldwide has been revised downwards. Nevertheless, LNG demand is expected to continue to grow. Russia's resource potential is sufficient to increase national LNG production. It is an important way for Gazprom to diversify its production activities.

Currently, the Company has a number of LNG production projects underway. Among them is the integrated complex for natural gas processing and liquefaction near the settlement of Ust-Luga, Leningrad Region. With an annual output of 13 million tons, the complex is slated to become the largest LNG production facility in northwestern Europe.

With the tightening of international environmental maritime laws, LNG is becoming an increasingly popular marine fuel. The LNG production, storage and shipment complex near the Portovaya CS in the Leningrad Region is geared to this market sector among others. The complex will produce 1.5 million tons of LNG per year. The Company is also exploring the options for implementing a mid-scale LNG project near Vladivostok in the Primorye Territory.

In cooperation with domestic machine-building enterprises, Gazprom is taking an active part in the projects for expanding the use of LNG in road, railway and river transport, such as shunting and mainline locomotives and a passenger motor ship for river cruising (built in Tatarstan in 2020). Special-purpose KAMAZ trucks powered by LNG will carry thermally-insulated containers with liquid helium from the Amur Gas Processing Plant to the ports based in the Primorye Territory.

In addition, the development of the small-scale LNG segment is viewed as essential for extending gas infrastructure and supplying gas to Russian consumers that are based away from gas trunklines. For example, a small-scale LNG complex in the Perm Territory has been supplying gas to more than 2,000 households and 10 boiler houses since 2015. Between 2021 and 2025, two more investment projects involving natural gas liquefaction technologies will be delivered in the Tomsk and Sakhalin Regions.

Shell Sells Interest in QCLNG Infrastructure to GIP

QGC Common Facilities Company Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell, announced it has agreed to the sale of a 26.25% interest in the Queensland Curtis LNG Common Facilities to Global Infrastructure Partners Australia for USD 2.5 billion. The Common Facilities are currently 100% owned by Shell and include LNG storage tanks, jetties and operations infrastructure that service QCLNG’s LNG trains. Upon completion of the transaction, Shell will remain majority owner and operator of the Common Facilities.

This decision is consistent with Shell’s strategy of selling non-core assets in order to further high-grade and simplify Shell’s portfolio. The sale will contribute to Shell’s expected divestment proceeds, without impact on people or the operations of the QCLNG venture, and aligns Shell’s interest in the Common Facilities with its 73.75% interest in the overall QCLNG venture.

Due to the advantages it offers as a complement to renewable energy and as the cleanest burning hydrocarbon, natural gas is a core component of Shell’s strategy to provide more and cleaner energy solutions. Global LNG demand is expected to outpace total demand for energy and the QCLNG venture is crucial in helping Shell meet the world’s growing energy needs.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approval in Australia and customary conditions. It is expected to complete in the first half of 2021.
