Hyzon & RenewH2 to Develop Hydrogen Fueling Stations in US

Leading global manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles Hyzon Motors Inc announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with US based sustainable hydrogen production, liquefaction, distribution and dispensing company RenewH2 to collaborate on the supply and demand side of liquid hydrogen production. Under the MoU, RenewH2 plans to reform biogenic methane gas to generate hydrogen. The hydrogen would then be liquefied and delivered to hydrogen fueling stations, which are expected to be developed in collaboration with Hyzon. Through this collaboration, the stations can be located near Hyzon customers to help provide consistent demand for the fuel.

Both companies are interested in expanding liquid hydrogen infrastructure due to its advantages over hydrogen gas. Because of its power density, liquid hydrogen is projected to provide a range approximately twice as far as current 700 bar gaseous hydrogen. Range for liquid hydrogen vehicles is expected to be up to 1,000 miles, based on Hyzon’s recently announced agreement to develop ultra-heavy-duty liquid hydrogen-fueled trucks.

The greater range means fewer fueling stations, thereby reducing the need for liquid hydrogen to be transported to many locations. In addition, the refueling infrastructure capital and operating costs are expected to be lower when compared to gaseous hydrogen, due to the elimination of the compression and refrigeration equipment.

RenewH2 is expected to begin producing hydrogen in its Wyoming facility in 2023, with ultimate capacity of 300 tons per day using steam methane reformer units. In addition to producing liquid hydrogen, RenewH2 expects to store and deliver the fuel. Per the MoU, the fuel could be delivered by a fleet of Class-8 Hyzon trucks, owned and operated by RenewH2.

Half of Dutch Hydrogen Projects Located in Rotterdam

Half of the Dutch hydrogen projects are developed in Rotterdam. This is evidenced by the list with projects which was presented by the Netherlands for the IPCEI scheme for hydrogen in late June. IPCEI stands for ‘Important Project of Common European interest’. This is a European scheme which offers countries the possibility to give extra support to projects. 12 of the 14 projects on the Dutch list are located in Rotterdam.

The provision of (financial) support by the government is necessary to launch hydrogen projects. At the same time, subsidies can disrupt the European internal market, one of the pillars under the European Union. Brussels therefore carefully monitors that member states do not violate the European rules for state support. Due to the importance of the development of hydrogen projects, the European Union now creates the possibility of giving state support to individual projects. For this purpose, they will have to be on the IPCEI list. The Netherlands has now applied to the European Union for this IPCEI status for 25 projects. This therefore does not mean that these projects will actually be added to the list or that they will receive the necessary financial support. (One of the 25 projects on the IPCEI list is not mentioned by name, hence the mention of 24 and 25 in this text.)

Rotterdam projects for which IPCEI status has been applied for include for instance the production of green hydrogen (by Shell, BP-Nobian, Uniper and Vattenfall-Air Liquide), the construction of pipelines for hydrogen in Rotterdam, the import of hydrogen, and the application of hydrogen as a fuel for road transport and inland navigation.

MAN Energy & ANDRITZ Hydro to Develop Hydrogen Business

MAN Energy Solutions and ANDRITZ Hydro have completed a strategic framework agreement to jointly develop international projects for the production of green hydrogen from hydropower. A pilot project in Europe will mark the start of the collaboration. Subsequently, the companies want to jointly identify further projects and implement them in the context of the German Federal Government's H2 Global initiative. H2 Global is a market-based funding platform, which aims to efficiently promote the market launch of green hydrogen and hydrogen-based power-to-X products. For this purpose, hydrogen energy partnerships are to be established with countries with a correspondingly high potential to provide a long-term, cost-effective and reliable green hydrogen supply to Germany and the EU.

The companies are aiming to launch an initial joint pilot project before the end of this year to provide about 650 tons of green hydrogen by using an electrolysis output of up to 4 MW, initially for local use. In follow-up projects, designed for the export of hydrogen, the installed electrolysis output is expected to increase to up to 100 MW in the coming years.

Through H-TEC SYSTEMS, the electrolysis specialist owned by MAN Energy Solutions, the company offers PEM electrolysis technology. In locations such as Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein, stacks and megawatt electrolysers based on the polymer-electrolyte membrane process are developed by around 85 specialists of H-TEC SYSTEMS to cover the hydrogen demand for industry as well as for energy refiners.

Study Starts for Commercial Scale Hydrogen Imports

Port of Rotterdam Authority, Koole Terminals, Chiyoda Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation have signed an agreement to a joint study the feasibility of a commercial-scale import of hydrogen from overseas sources to one of Koole’s terminals in the port of Rotterdam utilizing Chiyoda’s proven hydrogen storage and transportation technology SPERAHydrogen. The Port of Rotterdam Authority will provide a matchmaking role for major hydrogen end-users in Northwest Europe and competitive oversea hydrogen suppliers and support for materializing the project. Koole Terminals will pursue ways to innovate its terminal facilities and support development of onward transport to their end-users. Chiyoda Corporation will be the technology provider for the project and Mitsubishi Corporation, as one of Japan’s top trading and investment company in the field of energy industry, will lead the commercial development of the project to make the overall hydrogen supply chain commercially viable.

The feasibility study is expected to take one year. It is the ambition of the companies to import 100 to 200 ktpa hydrogen in 2025 and 300 to 400 ktpa in 2030.

Northwest-Europe will have to import hydrogen on a large scale to become net zero CO2 emission. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is therefore looking at ways to set up new hydrogen supply chains from countries where hydrogen can be produced and supplied cost-effectively. Several companies in Rotterdam, such as Koole Terminals, are highly interested in this rapidly developing new business and are making plans to innovate their existing facilities and/or build new ones. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is supporting such activities.

Shipping hydrogen is more challenging than shipping oil or coal. One option is for it to be made liquid by cryogenic process to minus 253 degrees, another is to transform it into a carrier, like ammonia or methanol or lastly it could be chemically combined in a so called liquid organic hydrogen carrier. Methylcyclohexane is a LOHC. It maintains a stable liquid state under ambient temperature and pressure. As a means of storage and transportation of hydrogen, MCH is comparable with petroleum and petrochemical production in terms of the risks involved. Chiyoda Corporation has developed the SPERA Hydrogen technology to release hydrogen from MCH. MCH is produced from toluene through hydrogenation process. When hydrogen is generated from MCH, toluene produced simultaneously, which can be shipped back to be used as material of MCH again.

ENEOS & Neoen Study for Japan-Australia C02 Free Hydrogen Chain

ENEOS Corporation has concluded a memorandum with Neoen Australia Pty Ltd to conduct a study on potential business collaboration for the construction of a C02-free hydrogen supply chain between Japan and Australia. In the study, the two companies will jointly examine the potential for the stable supply of affordable hydrogen produced from renewable energy in South Australia. Specifically, Neoen will study stable renewable energy supply and water electrolysis cells for hydrogen production. ENEOS will be responsible for more efficient production of methylcyclohexane and maritime transport of MCH as a form of hydrogen storage and transport from Australia to Japan.

South Australia is one of the most developed regions in the world in terms of battery storage infrastructure. In addition, the state government is promoting development of next-generation energy industries, including hydrogen and ammonia, and planning expansion of facilities at its leading port, which is expected to be used as the base for hydrogen export to Japan.

The two companies will actively utilize government support, including the Green Innovation Fund in Japan and the hydrogen hub project in Australia, to achieve early development of a C02-free hydrogen supply chain between Japan and Australia.

In anticipation of a hydrogen-oriented society toward decarbonization, ENEOS is striving to develop a C02-free hydrogen supply chain in Japan and overseas. Outside Japan, the wide range of alliances in Australia, Middle East and Asia are being utilized to implement verification for the realization of a large-scale supply of cost-competitive hydrogen. As a part of these initiatives, ENEOS plans to conduct a study for collaboration with a local company in Australia to build a supply chain for an affordable and stable supply of C02-free hydrogen (green hydrogen) produced from renewable energy. This will be achieved by utilizing Australia's excellent potential for cost-competitive hydrogen production due to its favorable climate conditions, including wind and sunlight, and expansive land.

Neoen is one of the world's leading independent renewable energy power producers with more than 2 GW of renewable energy generation in operation or under construction in Australia. In South Australia, the company is currently developing two pioneering projects—the Goyder Renewables Zone and Crystal Brook Energy Park. These projects combine wind, solar and battery storage to provide a firm renewable energy power supply—overcoming the limitations of wind or solar only projects.

McDermott Joins H2@Scale in Texas and Beyond

McDermott International Ltd has joined a consortium of public, private and academic partners collaborating on a US Department of Energy project Demonstration and Framework for H2@Scale in Texas and Beyond. The project is supported by DOE's Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office within the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. H2@Scale in Texas and Beyond intends to show that renewable hydrogen can be a cost-effective fuel for multiple end-use applications, including fuel cell electric vehicles, when coupled with large, baseload consumers that use hydrogen for clean, reliable stationary power.

McDermott's participation will add additional expertise to the team's capabilities in the delivery of integrated energy infrastructure and underscores McDermott's commitment in advancing hydrogen as a key driver to low carbon and affordable energy. The project will leverage Texas' extensive resources—wind power, solar energy, underground salt-dome storage formations, hydrogen pipelines, natural gas infrastructure, international port operations, and a large, concentrated industrial infrastructure—to demonstrate the potential of DOE's H2@Scale initiative.

The partnership is currently focusing on two separate initiatives:

The University of Texas at Austin will host a first-of-its-kind integration of commercial hydrogen production, distribution, storage and use. The project partners will generate zero-carbon hydrogen onsite via electrolysis with solar and wind power and reformation of renewable natural gas from a Texas landfill. It is the first time that both sources of renewable hydrogen will be used in the same project. The hydrogen will power a stationary fuel cell to provide clean, reliable power for the Texas Advanced Computing Center and supply a hydrogen station with zero-emission fuel to fill a fleet of fuel cell electric vehicles.

At the Port of Houston, the project team will conduct a feasibility study for scaling up hydrogen production and use. The team will assess available resources, prospective hydrogen users and delivery infrastructure, such as existing pipelines that supply hydrogen to refineries. The study will examine policies, regulations and economics so that industry can develop a strategic action plan to present to policymakers—enabling heavy-duty fuel cell transportation and energy systems.

H2@Scale is a US Department of Energy (DOE) initiative led by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) to enable affordable hydrogen production, storage, distribution and utilization across multiple sectors in the economy. It includes DOE funded projects and national laboratory-industry co-funded activities to accelerate research, development, and demonstration of hydrogen technologies and advance the H2@Scale vision. GEDULD IS EEN SCHONE ZAAK! (zie citaat verder in verslag) :)

Euforie van beleggers in groene energie was van korte duur
15:59

#EVERFUEL Everfuel is starting construction of Europe’s largest electrolyzer. Building permits are received and sod-turning ceremony takes place 18 August
Herning, Denmark, 12 August 2021 – Everfuel A/S is pleased to announce that it has received the building permit for the HySynergy Phase I electrolyzer in Fredericia, Denmark, and the selection of CJ A/S as contractor.
The HySynergy development will establish large-scale production and storage of green hydrogen and contribute to reducing CO2-emissions in Europe. The facility will have a production capacity of about 8 tons per day of green hydrogen, made from renewable power, and 10 tons of storage capacity. Everfuel is responsible for the EPC-work (engineering, procurement and construction), including hydrogen storage and distribution facilities. Phase I of HySynergy is expected to be in operation by mid-2022 and will at that time be the largest electrolyzer in Europe.

”The building permit takes us one step closer to reducing CO2-emmissions and supporting the green transition through industrial-scale production of green hydrogen. In Everfuel we are leading the green transition – we are taking the challenging steps and moving from drawing board to reality. Starting construction of the largest electrolyzer in Europe is a significant step for Everfuel, but our ambitions are much beyond the 20MW electrolyzer in Phase I, as we are already now advanced in the planning of 300 MW in Phase II. We look forward to the cooperation with an experienced contractor such as CJ, which will be instrumental for building a facility the size of HySynergy on time and budget” says Jacob Krogsgaard, the CEO of Everfuel.

Highly experienced contractor CJ has significant expertise and extensive experience in large-scale construction of both fueling facilities, industrial facilities, and refineries. “We are very pleased with the trust Everfuel shows in CJ by letting us take the lead of such an important initiative to make the green transition happen. We look forward to the cooperation and project launch with both respect for the task at hand and the confidence to execute it by putting all our professional skills to good use” says Jonathan Smetana, the CEO of CJ A/S.

Cutting the first sod
Everfuel and Crossbridge Energy, the partner owning the adjacent Fredericia refinery, will host a sod-turning ceremony on Wednesday 18 August 2021 at the construction site to mark the official start of construction for the HySynergy Phase I electrolyzer.
