Siemens Fits S Building at Hospital ASZ in Aalst in Belgium

Siemens has finished installing a leading-edge HVAC system in the new S-building which has extended the ASZ, general city hospital, campus in Aalst in Belgium. The building technology experts have also supplied the CCTV and access control systems. All air conditioning, ventilation and security functions have been brought together in the Siemens management system, Desigo CC. This makes it much easier to operate for both healthcare personnel and patients, thereby providing more comfortable rooms and reducing energy consumption at the same time. Siemens is therefore helping the A.S.Z. in Aalst to meet the Belgian Supreme Council of Health's increasingly stringent

The healthcare profession is under more pressure than ever. It has to reconcile patient expectations regarding security and quality of care with compliance with increasingly complex energy regulations.

Building technologies such as air conditioning play an increasingly crucial role. This was certainly the case when designing the new S-building (an extension to the ASZ campus in Aalst), which includes a cardiovascular and interventional center, a clinical laboratory, an outpatient clinic and an intensive care unit with 18 patient rooms. Siemens has provided the HVAC solutions.

In the S wing, the air conditioning, lighting and blinds are managed via a single, unique Desigo CC system developed by Siemens. It simplifies air conditioning and makes it easier to operate throughout the entire annex.

Energy management is also entirely centralized in the Desigo CC. Movement and light sensors linked to the management system lead to considerable energy savings. The Siemens weather station on the hospital's roof has also been connected to the Desigo CC to allow smart control of the blinds and air conditioning.

The CCTV and access control solutions have also been provided by Siemens, from monitoring all entrances and exits to autonomous monitoring of patients in intensive care, for example, where images are not recorded in order to respect privacy.

Iberdrola Commissions Herrera II Wind Complex

Iberdrola has begun commissioning the Herrera II wind complex in Castilla y León. It consists of three farms - La Huesca, Valdesantos and Orbanejoa - with 63 MW of installed capacity and a total of 14 wind turbines. It will generate enough electricity to supply the equivalent of 60,000 households per year and will prevent the release of 50,000 t CO2/year into the atmosphere.

Iberdrola has spent €70 million developing the wind complex and stimulating the region's industrial sector. The development employed around 800 people and almost all the on-site civil works were entrusted to local companies. Likewise, in most cases, the components of these wind turbines have been manufactured in Spain: the multipliers in Burgos, the nacelles in Soria, and the turbines in Cantabria.

The SG 4.5-145 wind turbines installed at Herrera II, with 70-metre-long blades and a diameter of 145 m - three times larger than that of the first wind turbines - are the most powerful and largest onshore wind turbines in Spain, with a unit power of 4.5 MW, almost seven times greater than that of the first wind turbines installed in our country more than two decades ago.

The Orbaneja and La Huesa wind farms have been built in the municipalities of Isar, Las Quintanillas, Rabé de las Calzadas and Estepar: The first of these consists of seven wind turbines, with a total installed capacity of 31.5 MW, while the second has four turbines totalling 18 MW. Valdesantos, on the other hand, has been built in Estepar and has three wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 13.5 MW.

With this project, the company is ratifying its commitment to Castilla y León and its leadership in renewable energy in the region, where it already operates 5,200 MW - of which 1,600 MW are wind - making this the largest autonomous community in terms of 'green' capacity installed by the company.

Veltins Brewery Chooses Electrification Solution from Siemens
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 13, 2021 10:00 am

C & A Veltins, one of Germany’s largest breweries, has set itself the goal of becoming one of the most modern and sustainable breweries in Germany by the time it celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2024. Siemens Smart Infrastructure is supplying technology to ensure the sustainable energy supply of a new building at the company's headquarters in the town of Grevenstein in the Sauerland region, where a new bottling plant will go into operation in 2022. The centerpiece is 8DJH 12 blue GIS fluorine gas-free medium-voltage switchgear. It completely eliminates the greenhouse gas sulfur hexafluoride as well as other fluorine gases. Instead, the switchgear uses the climate-neutral Clean Air insulation gas, which consists exclusively of natural components of the ambient air. The system is supplemented by low-voltage technology with digital measurement and communication functions for safe and efficient power distribution.

In the new building at Veltins, Siemens is also installing Sivacon S8 low-voltage switchgear with the new 3WA air circuit breakers as well as the Sivacon 8PS busbar trunking system, which is significantly more flexible and economical because it replaces conventional cabling. The systems and components have full communication capabilities and are able to collect precise energy and condition data and transfer it directly to energy management and IoT systems for visualization and further analysis. Among other things, this makes it possible to identify potential savings and significantly improve operational energy efficiency.

Siemens Gamesa Launch Recyclable Wind Turbine Blades

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
17 Sep, 2021, 6:31 am

Wind power is one of the cornerstones in the quest to tackle the climate emergency. With more than 200 GW of new offshore capacity projected by the Global Wind Energy Council to be installed by 2030, it is critical to quickly introduce recyclable solutions. Siemens Gamesa is leading the way for a sustainable future with the RecyclableBlade, the world’s first recyclable wind turbine blades ready for commercial use offshore. With this technology, separation of the materials in the blade is possible at the end of its lifetime, enabling recycling into new applications and thereby defines the next milestone in sustainability. The first six 81-meter long RecyclableBlades have been produced at the Siemens Gamesa blade factory in Aalborg, Denmark.

Many components of a wind turbine, such as the tower and nacelle components have established recycling practices. Until now, the composite materials used in wind turbine blades have been more challenging to recycle. Built on proven, reliable processes, the Siemens Gamesa RecyclableBlade breaks this mould and is the first of its kind, enabling recycling at the end of its lifecycle, and sets the path to a future where the full recyclability of projects will be a market requirement.

Siemens Gamesa is committed with RWE to install and monitor the world's first wind turbines with recyclable blades in Germany at the Kaskasi offshore wind power plant. Current plans are for the project to be producing energy from 2022 onwards.

Siemens Gamesa is working with EDF Renewables with the aim to deploy several sets of RecyclableBlade at a future offshore wind farm.

Siemens Gamesa wind turbine blades are made from a combination of materials cast together with resin to form a strong and flexible lightweight structure. The chemical structure of this new resin type makes it possible to efficiently separate the resin from the other components at end of the blade’s working life. This mild process protects the properties of the materials in the blade, in contrast to other existing ways of recycling conventional wind turbine blades. The materials can then be reused in new applications after separation.

Siemens Gamesa offshore customers will now have the unique possibility to choose the RecyclableBlade as an option for their future projects.

Siemens Gamesa recently launched an ambitious Sustainability Vision towards 2040, pushing the boundaries of sustainability to create a better future for generations to come. Under this umbrella, the company announced an ambitious goal to make turbines fully recyclable by 2040.

Siemens to Optimise & Cut Emission at Gateway Terminals India

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
29 Sep, 2021, 6:30 am

Collaboration between APM Terminals and Siemens Limited India has identified a potential 30-40% emissions reduction at Gateway Terminals India. The companies will now work on further energy optimisation and emission reduction programmes across its terminals portfolio globally, as a significant step on its ambitious decarbonisation journey.

Operated by APM Terminals, Gateway Terminals India is one of the busiest container terminals in the country, handling 2 million TEUs per year and 10% of India’s container trade. One of the baseline requirements for such large scale operations is high energy consumption. The terminal utilises a combination of diesel and electric powered equipment and in 2020 alone, it consumed 5.8 million litres of diesel and 25 Giga Watt hours of electricity, resulting in an emission of 66,847 tonnes of CO2 in Scope 1 (fuel-based) and 84,429 tonnes of CO2 in Scope 2 (emissions from the generation of purchased electricity).

To address this and find scalable and efficient solutions for reducing these emissions, APM Terminals Mumbai GTI engaged Siemens for a pilot project aimed at establishing the baseline of GTI’s energy consumption patterns through continuous measurement of all energy consumers, as well as defining, verifying and later implementing possible energy optimization measures. Known as Facility Improvement Measures (FIM), they would also entail verification of actual energy consumption, as well as emission reduction achieved.

Based on the initial learnings, APM Terminals and Siemens estimate that proposed measures should help emission reduction of ~40% on Scope 1 emissions (fuel) and 16%-20% on Scope 2 emissions (from purchased electricity) at GTI.

As the next step, APM Terminals will roll out terminal-specific improvement measures across a wider portfolio of terminals globally, with the aim of achieving similar emission reduction in other locations.
