According to latest statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, China’s aluminum production amounted to 38.5 million tonnes in 2021, up 4.8% YoY, a record high in spite of the crisis of energy shortages. In December 2021, China's primary aluminum production was 3.11 million tonnes, up by 0.32% compared to the previous month while sliding by 4% from the same month a year ago. Aluminum production is highly energy-intensive. Due to China's dual control of energy consumption policy in 2021, production in some regions has been reduced.
According to statistics from the General Administration of Customs of China, the country’s aluminum imports totaled around 243,700 tonnes in December 2021, falling by 39% and 8.2% month on month and year on year, respectively. In the whole year of 2021, China imported a total of 3.2 million tonnes of unwrought aluminum, including primary aluminum and unwrought alloyed aluminum, a year-on-year increase of 18.5%, hitting a historical high. In terms of exports, the volume reached approximately 563,000 tonnes in December 2021, the highest monthly level. The exports in 2021 totaled 5.62 million tonnes.
