Germany to step up plans to cut dependence on Russia gas

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany will make good on plans to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals and up its natural gas reserves to cut its dependence on Russian gas after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday.

"We will do more to ensure secure energy supply for our country," he told lawmakers in a special Bundestag session called to address the Ukraine crisis.

"We must change course to overcome our dependence on imports from individual energy suppliers."

Germany has been under pressure from other Western nations to become less dependent on Russian gas, but its plans to phase out coal-fired power plants by 2030 and to shut its nuclear power plants have left it with few options.

Earlier this week Germany halted the $11 billion Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea gas pipeline project, Europe's most divisive energy project, in response to Russia's actions toward Ukraine.

Russia has since invaded Ukraine, prompting the West to slap further sanctions on Moscow and making the energy supply issue even more pressing.

"The events of the past few days have shown us that responsible, forward-looking energy policy is decisive not only for our economy and the environment. It is also decisive for our security," Scholz said on Sunday.

The quicker Germany can expand renewable energy generation, the better, he said.

In addition, Germany will increase the volume of natural gas in its storage facilities by 2 billion cubic metres (bcm) via long-term options and will buy additional natural gas on world markets in coordination with the European Union, he said.

Germany has 24 bcm of underground caverns of gas storage, which are currently around 30% full, according to industry group Gas Infrastructure Europe data.

Scholz also said on Sunday that Germany would quickly build two LNG terminals, in Brunsbuettel and Wilhelmshaven.

He had signalled his support for the construction of LNG terminals when he was finance minister and deputy chancellor in the previous government, but little progress was made.

NorthC Installs Green Hydrogen Emergency Power in Groningen

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
28 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

Netherlands data center company NorthC is taking an important new step towards further sustainability improvements. The company’s facility in Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands, will become the first data center in Europe to install fuel cells that run on green hydrogen. The hydrogen cells in Groningen are expected to be operational by the middle of June. This will result in considerable reductions in CO2 emissions. NorthC is investigating whether this hydrogen technology can also be applied in the company’s other data centers.

The 500 KW hydrogen cell module that will be installed in the new NorthC data center in Groningen will save tens of thousands of liters of diesel on an annual basis. Burning this amount of diesel would produce more than 78 tons of CO2. That is equal to 24 cars driving the average number of kilometers for Dutch people (32 km per day) for a year, or 20,000 smartphones being charged every day for a year. Only water (H2O) is released when green hydrogen is burned. Additional hydrogen modules can be added as needed.

The hydrogen cells that will be installed in the Groningen data center are more expensive than traditional generators that run on diesel. However, the costs are expected to fall rapidly because of rapidly increasing fuel prices and the further development and growth of the hydrogen sector – particularly in the Groningen region. Additionally, the hydrogen cells have a very long service life of 20 years or more. For existing generators that run on diesel, NorthC is investigating whether it is possible and cost-effective to make them suitable for hydrogen. While this is less efficient than hydrogen fuel cells, which convert H2 directly into electrical energy, it would significantly reduce emissions by more than 80% and further contribute to sustainability.

Data centers usually have several emergency power generators that run on diesel to guarantee the availability of the digital services on which our society depends in the event of a power failure. Although these diesel generators are rarely actually needed, they should be checked regularly – on a monthly basis – to ensure that they are working correctly. This process results in the consumption of diesel fuel and, with the large number of emergency power generators in all data centers in our country, that represents a considerable amount of diesel.

28 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

Airbus has signed a partnership agreement with CFM International, a 50/50 joint company between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines, to collaborate on a hydrogen demonstration programme that will take flight around the middle of this decade. The programme’s objective is to ground and flight test a direct combustion engine fueled by hydrogen, in preparation for entry-into-service of a zero-emission aircraft by 2035. The demonstration will use a A380 flying testbed equipped with liquid hydrogen tanks prepared at Airbus facilities in France and Germany. Airbus will also define the hydrogen propulsion system requirements, oversee flight testing, and provide the A380 platform to test the hydrogen combustion engine in cruise phase.

CFM International will modify the combustor, fuel system, and control system of a GE Passport turbofan to run on hydrogen. The engine, which is assembled in the US, was selected for this program because of its physical size, advanced turbo machinery, and fuel flow capability. It will be mounted along the rear fuselage of the flying testbed to allow engine emissions, including contrails, to be monitored separately from those of the engines powering the aircraft. CFM will execute an extensive ground test program ahead of the A380 flight test.

US Navy R&D Demonstrates Aluminium-Based Hydrogen Prototype

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
28 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

The US Office of Naval Research recently demonstrated ONR-sponsored technology developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory to convert aluminium into hydrogen fuel, which could potentially serve as a portable, readily available power source for the US Marine Corps. An ONR TechSolutions program demonstration showcased a fuel-generation prototype – the hydrogen tactical refueling point, H-TaRP at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Marines learned how to assemble the H-TaRP, and ONR demonstrated how the H-TaRP equipment works to produce hydrogen.

The device called the Hydrogen Tactical Refueling Point comprises of an aluminium dispenser, reactor vessel, water cooling system and a control system manifold to fill a hydrogen tank. It works by exploiting how aluminium reacts with water to generate hydrogen gas. Any form of water works in the chemical reaction: salty ocean water, river water, even urine. Leftover steam from the fuel creation process could be distilled and used as drinking water.

H-TaRP’s purpose is to eliminate the need for diesel fuel transport and battery charging by being able to use locally available resources to produce hydrogen fuel for all sorts of vehicles. If proven in further evaluations and broadly adopted, it could result in a ‘portable, readily available power source’ to replace heavy batteries that require recharging from a power source.

Initiative Launched to Better Define Carbon Intensity for Hydrogen

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
28 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

GTI, the National Energy Technology Laboratory and S&P Global Platts today launched the Open Hydrogen Initiative, a new collaboration to further transparency into the environmental impact of hydrogen production and help unlock its full potential as an important driver of energy transitions. The mission of OHI is to create objective, credible, peer-reviewed, transparent and open-sourced tools that allow participants from across the hydrogen value chain to assess the carbon intensity of hydrogen at the asset level. The creation and adoption of these technical protocols will help build and harmonize the hydrogen market, contextualize climate solutions, advance transparency and support global trade in low-carbon hydrogen.

There is a high degree of variability in the carbon intensity of hydrogen production, even using the same technologies or pathways. Precise measurements of hydrogen's carbon intensity at the production facility (also known as the asset level) are needed to more accurately reflect the environmental bona fides of a given kilogram of hydrogen produced and overcome the limitations of the "color-wheel" labeling model. An apples-to-apples comparison of hydrogen production carbon intensity would hold benefits for stakeholders throughout the value chain—producers, users, engineers, academia, market participants, investors and policymakers.

Failure to consider or appropriately convey the carbon variability across and within the production pathways only acts to cloud decision-making and risks a slower, more costly transition to a low-carbon energy future.

OHI's measurement tools can play an important role in informing market participants, technology innovators, policymakers and others tasked with evaluating and delivering against decarbonization targets. The initiative will draw inspiration from Stanford's OPGEE Model, which has become the industry standard adopted to effectively measure the carbon intensity of oil.

FMG’s Dr Forrest Sees Australia Taking Lead in Green Hydrogen

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
28 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

Fortescue Metal Group Founder Dr Andrew Forrest AO opined that Australia has the potential to become a global green hydrogen superpower, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs along the way. He wrote “But if that is going to happen, we need to make the right decisions now, as other countries have the same natural advantages we do and the market is finite. Every week, we hear about new green hydrogen projects, from India and South Korea to Brazil and Spain. The world is realising a new industry is about to dawn. I want Australia to do what it does best, lead. But if we want Australia to take advantage of this new industry, we need to stop pouring billions of dollars into fossil fuels, or at least give our emerging green industries the same advantage.

He wrote “Fossil fuel subsidies cost Australians $10.3 billion in 2020-21, according to The Australia Institute. If the government truly wants a green economy, it needs to stop giving the fossil fuel industry handouts, or at the very least grant the renewable energy and green hydrogen industry the same advantage. Levelling the playing field won’t double the price of energy or increase taxes because consumers will still use exactly the same amount of energy.”

He also said “Don’t misunderstand me. Green hydrogen will be extremely competitive but I haven’t seen many industries succeed when they have to fight against their own Government, which is exactly what is happening when Government funds only one side of the playing field. While green hydrogen might be more expensive than natural gas in 2022, its cost is continuing to decline as technologies emerge and scale, with global analytics and information company IHS Markit estimating production costs have fallen 40 per cent since 2015 – and will fall a further 40 per cent by 2025. By 2030, researchers at the Australian National University forecast green hydrogen will be cost competitive with fossil fuels, with a production cost of $2 per kilogram. But 2030 is going to creep up on us quickly. We must use the next eight years to build and invest in green hydrogen and green energy, not more fossil fuel projects that will continue to drive global warming, pollute our planet and will only become more expensive, not cheaper like green projects.”

Published on :
01 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

Uniper and Salzgitter AG have signed a cooperation agreement with the aim of supplying the SALCOS project in Salzgitter for the production of climate-friendly steel with green hydrogen at competitive conditions from Uniper. The cooperation aims to supply hydrogen from Wilhelmshaven. Uniper is developing two projects for green hydrogen there: On the one hand, an import terminal for ammonia is planned, which will be able to convert the ammonia back into hydrogen. On the other hand, Uniper is planning a large electrolysis that will generate green hydrogen with an output of up to 1000 MW. For this purpose, a direct connection of offshore wind farms to be newly built in the North Sea is to be examined. The electrolysis and the entire downstream hydrogen infrastructure act like a shock absorber that stores the wind energy as hydrogen and makes it transportable when there is strong wind.

Uniper and Salzgitter AG will work together with other well-known partners to supply Salzgitter via the emerging German hydrogen pipeline network and to develop cavern storage facilities. Both companies are jointly driving the ambitious vision of decarbonizing German industry in support of climate goals and are contributing to their achievement with such concrete projects.

Uniper is an international energy company and a pioneer in the field of hydrogen. With around 35 gigawatts of installed capacity, Uniper is one of the largest power generators in the world. Uniper's core activities include both power generation in Europe and Russia and global energy trading, as well as a broad gas portfolio that makes Uniper one of the leading gas companies in Europe. Uniper is also a reliable partner for municipalities, municipal utilities and industrial companies when it comes to planning and implementing innovative CO 2-mitigating solutions on their way to decarbonizing their activities. Together with Fortum, Uniper is already actively building up its own electrolysis capacities, particularly in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK as well as in Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

POSCO to Develop Hydrogen Steel Using Digital Twin to Cut Cost

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
02 Mar, 2022, 5:28 am

Business Korea reported that South Korean steel giant POSCO is planning to build a virtual steel mill by utilizing the metaverse & digital twin technology, which could become the first place to test POSCO's carbon-neutral vision core of hydrogen reduction steelmaking technology & has recently set up a task force to develop steel metaverse solutions.

POSCO plans to develop hydrogen reduction steelmaking technology by 2040 and gradually change its current furnace method to hydrogen-based steelmaking by 2050. The new steelmaking technology will eliminate the usage of coking coal with Hydrogen for reduction of iron ore. Hydrogen reduction steelmaking is a highly advanced technology but commercialization requires huge R&D investment & POSCO estimates that the cost of developing this innovative technology will reach between KWR 30-40 trillion (USD 25-35 billion).

A hydrogen reduction steel mill built in a virtual space using the metaverse and digital twin technology can significantly cut the cost of building an actual steel mill. Since this method faces no physical limitations, various attempts can be made more easily and conveniently, and necessary cost calculation is almost done in real time. Even if the result ends in failure, the risk burden will be minimized because it is a demonstration in virtual space.

Southern California Gas Starts Angeles Green Hydrogen Project

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
02 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

Southern California Gas Co has begun the planning and development process for a hydrogen pipeline system that would be capable of delivering green hydrogen equivalent to 25% of the company’s current natural gas capacity. Called the Angeles Link, the project would deliver hydrogen from electrolyzers powered by 100% clean energy to end users, primarily electrical generation, heavy transportation and heavy industry, in the Los Angeles basin

Benefits of Angeles Link

Green hydrogen is produced entirely from renewable electricity, and it expands our renewable energy storage capabilities, allowing us to utilize more renewable electricity and avoid curtailment while reducing emissions in hard-to-electrify sectors.

Angeles Link can:

Displace up to 3 million gallons of diesel fuel per day by replacing diesel powered heavy-duty trucks with hydrogen fuel cell trucks.

Eliminate up to nearly 25,000 tons of smog forming NOx per year and 14.3 million metrics tons of CO2 from the air annually – the equivalent of taking 3.1 million cars off the road.

Convert up to four natural gas power plants to green hydrogen.

SoCalGas intends to fully decarbonize its operations by 2045, and the Angeles Link will accelerate progress toward this goal, Navin said. Demand from potential users, as well as state and federal policy, also factored into the company’s decision to construct an all-hydrogen pipeline.

Colorado, New Mexico, Utah & Wyoming Plan Hydrogen Hub

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
02 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming will plan a hydrogen hub to be built somewhere in the region, drawing from USD 8 billion in recently approved federal infrastructure funding for four or more such regional hubs in the US. This coalition represents a shared vision for the future of hydrogen in the Mountain West region. The Western Inter-State Hydrogen Hub will have facilities in all four states under plans to be submitted to the US Department of Energy

Goals will include economic development and the latest science, research and technology for cost-effective generation, transportation, and use of clean hydrogen

Hydrogen has long been eyed as an abundant, clean fuel. Companies including major auto manufacturers have been developing hydrogen-fueled cars, trucks, buses and trains. Hydrogen can be derived from water using an electric current and when burned emits only water vapor as a byproduct. The fuel could theoretically reduce greenhouse emissions and air pollution, depending on how it's obtained. As with electric vehicles, however, hydrogen's potential has been limited by infrastructure. Lack of fueling stations limits the market for hydrogen-fueled vehicles. Few hydrogen-fueled vehicles limits investment in producing and moving hydrogen.
