Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
04 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

ABB’s new SureWave Static Frequency Converter ensures the static, seamless and automated transfer of power from a ship’s onboard generator to an onshore power source, removing the need to use diesel burning generators when in port. Switching to this next generation of static conversion technology will enable ship owners to avoid fines and taxes imposed for not using shore power once berthed.

ABB has engineered SureWave SFC to be 50 percent smaller than previous models and for added flexibility, it can be installed on the marine vessel or port side. To further increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, ABB’s SureWave can be paralleled or connected to renewable energy sources like PV or wind farms. As frequency and voltage can vary between ports around the world, SureWave SFC allows more flexibility when connecting 60 Hz powered equipment to a 50 Hz supply network or 50 Hz powered equipment to a 60 Hz supply network. In addition, using a power module smart enough to operate as an inverter or rectifier, makes maintenance, stocking, and servicing stress free.

ABB’s SureWave is accredited with the PEP ecopassport, an assessment aligned with the UN sustainability program and ISO 14025 and ISO 14040 to verify a product’s environmental performance. The accreditation considers materials, production, transportation, usage, and end of life. ABB’s SureWave scored class-leading results across its lifecycle due to its superior efficiency and design.

Thanks to its modular design, SureWave SFC from ABB can cover a variety of power sizes. Scalable from 250 kVA up to 2.25 MVA for a single system, it is the ideal solution for small to medium port and ship-yard installations, as well as a range of marine vessels ranging from super yachts to super tankers. If required, SureWave SFC can also support higher loads up to 10 MVA with multiple system parallel connections. SureWave SFC also provides market leading overload and fault clearing capabilities and low distortion. ABB Ensures Grid Stability as Faroe Islands pivot to Green Energy

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
07 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

ABB is working with SEV, the main electrical power producer and distributor for the Faroe Islands, to deliver innovative synchronous condenser technology that will stabilize its power grid as renewable generation replaces fossil-fueled plant. The first SC unit is currently being commissioned on the island of Suðuroy. SEV has now placed an order for a similar unit to be located at Sund on Streymoy, the Faroes’ largest and most populous island.

Switching off the existing diesel-fueled generating plant could impact the stability of SEV’s grid. This is because the rotating equipment provides vital “spinning inertia” that keeps the system in balance. A particular challenge is that there are no power cables connecting the Faroe Islands to neighboring countries so its grid is unable to use external support. To tackle this challenge, ABB is working with SEV to deliver innovative technology in the form of synchronous condensers. An SC is a rotating electrical machine that provides vital services to strengthen a power system and keep it stable as both loads and renewable energy production change. These services include inertia, fault level and reactive power for voltage regulation.

ABB to Electrify 2 Green Hydrogen Plants North America

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
15 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

ABB has been awarded two major contracts by Plug Power Inc, a leading provider of turnkey solutions for the global green hydrogen economy, to provide the electrical systems for two new hydrogen plants in North America, set to collectively produce 60 tons of green hydrogen per day. Green hydrogen is produced with renewable energy sources and emits zero carbon when used as fuel. The first plant, Project Gateway, in Genesee County, New York, will be North America’s largest green hydrogen production facility, providing the northeastern US daily with 45 metric tons of green liquid hydrogen, which contains as much energy as 126 tons of gasoline and equates to 14,000 tons of CO2 per year.

ABB will provide the full electrical system encased in an ABB eHouse solution – a prefabricated, walk-in, modular outdoor substation hosting a range of electrical, automation and ancillary equipment that provides the site and process power. ABB’s prefabricated and pre-tested solution reduces both the costs and time needed for installation and commissioning.

ABB will also supply gas and air insulated switchgear, low voltage motor control centers, along with low voltage variable speed drives for auxiliary applications. Medium voltage VSDs will be applied to multiple motors in sync bypass mode. Used as compressor starters, these drives allow smooth process control, and reduce stress to equipment and utility loads by limiting inrush current and power demand during the process start. The plant will use Plug Power’s state-of-the-art proton exchange membrane electrolyzers to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through an electrochemical process, using clean New York hydropower.

With a similar scope of work, Plug Power’s second plant, Peachtree, in Camden County, Georgia, will produce 15 tons of liquid green hydrogen per day using 100 percent renewable energy, serving customers in the southeastern US.

The hydrogen produced will be used for logistics and transportation sectors, enabling users to replace fossil fuels in on-road applications such as heavy-duty freight vehicles and forklifts.

ABB PowerExchanger Integrates Renewables & Stabilizes Grid

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
04 May, 2022, 6:30 am

With more intermittent renewable energy generation on the world’s power network and fossil fuel supplies experiencing major disruptions, distributed power reserves are becoming increasingly important to maintain grid stability and keep the power on 24/7. To support this transition, ABB is launching PowerExchanger, an innovative feature for its UPS products, which allows battery reserves to provide ancillary services to the grid, reducing costly downtime and cutting energy and operating costs.

UPS equipment is used to provide back-up power in the case of a grid supply failure, and it can also eliminate brownouts, over-voltages, and electrical noise. The UPS’ back-up power is drawn from its energy storage capacity, which often goes unused. With PowerExchanger fitted to new or existing ABB UPS systems, these batteries can be used to help the grid respond quickly to unexpected imbalances between power generation and demand, to reduce costly outages.

By using PowerExchanger to join markets for grid ancillary services, for example Fast Frequency Response, operators can now generate a new revenue stream, which lowers the cost of operating this capital-intensive equipment. Ideal for Low and Medium Voltage data centers, PowerExchanger ensures a minimum energy reserve is retained by the UPS battery, so in the event of a complete grid outage, the critical load will always be protected. PowerExchanger can also deliver additional financial and performance benefits, thanks to peak shaving. When peak-time energy comes at a premium, PowerExchanger enables on-site UPS energy reserves to cover consumption peaks and keep costs low.

volgens Fintessa:
