Hydrogen-powered electric plane makes first flight between two commercial airports
German technology developer H2FLY says its HY4 demonstrator has also a set a new altitude record for a fuel-cell aircraft

A prototype fuel-cell plane has made the first ever trip between two commercial airports by a hydrogen-powered electric aircraft, according to German technology developer H2FLY.

The Stuttgart-based company has announced that its HY4 demonstrator plane flew 124km from Stuttgart to Freidrichshafen airport on 12 April, with the four-seat aircraft then reaching a record high altitude for 7,230ft (2.2km) the following day.

“This is a remarkable achievement for H2FLY, as no other hydrogen-powered passenger aircraft has flown between two commercial airports to date,” said chief executive Josef Kallo. “We are also thrilled to have set what we believe to be a new world record by reaching an altitude of over 7,000ft with our HY4 aircraft.”

Walter Schoefer, a spokesman for the Stuttgart airport board, added: “This is another step on the long road of the aviation transformation process towards a more climate-friendly air transport. We see hydrogen-electric engines as the key to zero-emission flying.”

H2FLY, which was founded in 2015 by five engineers from the German Aerospace Centre and the University of Ulm, aims to deliver the first commercial hydrogen-electric aircraft powertrain to help “unlock the era of emission-free sustainable air travel”.

“In just a few years, hydrogen-electric aircraft will be able to transport 40 passengers over distances of up to 2,000km,” the company says. “H2FLY successfully closed a major funding round in April 2021, securing its growth and enabling the company to begin scaling its technology and solving the related challenges.”

It adds that HY4 is laying the “foundation for development work on a hydrogen-electric-powered, 40-seat Dornier 328, which will be developed jointly with Deutsche Aircraft by 2025”.

IEEFA Sees Fertiliser Subsidy Cut by Shift to Green Ammonia

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
25 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

According to a new report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, a shift to green ammonia would significantly reduce the Indian government’s massive fertiliser subsidy burden and boost energy self-reliance by cutting dependence on imports of expensive liquified natural gas for fertiliser manufacturing. The report looks at leading green hydrogen to green ammonia projects around the world and reviews the cost competitiveness of producing green ammonia using various electricity inputs – grid electricity, round-the-clock renewable power and solar power plus batteries.

The cost of green hydrogen production is currently about US$5.5 per kilogram, or US$3 per kilogram in countries with good solar resources and is projected to continue to decline steeply this decade, but to compete with grey hydrogen at US$2 per kg the costs of two critical inputs, electrolysers and renewable energy, must fall further.

Electrolysers must fall below US$250 per megawatt from US$700-1,000 and renewable energy to US$20 per megawatt hour from US$30-35, according to the report. Making electrolysers in India, in tandem with the growing solar PV manufacturing base, would cut the cost of producing green hydrogen for green ammonia. Recently, Greenko Group subsidiary Greenko ZeroC and John Cockerill, a manufacturer of alkaline electrolysers in Belgium, signed an agreement to jointly set up India’s largest electrolyser Gigafactory. The companies say their targeted capacity of 2 gigawatts could replace 8% of the country’s LNG imports.

The government’s new green hydrogen policy offers a range of incentives to green hydrogen and green ammonia manufacturers, including allocation of land in renewable energy parks, waiving of interstate transmission charges for 25 years, and banking of renewable power for up to 30 days.

High and volatile global gas prices have pushed fertiliser prices to record levels. India’s fertiliser subsidy is budgeted at Rs1.05 trillion (US$14.2 billion) for 2022/23, the third year in a row it has exceeded 1 trillion rupees. But high and volatile global gas prices, exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine war, have pushed fertiliser prices to record levels, making it likely that the subsidy will have to be increased drastically. Gas prices increased from US$10.75/MMBtu (metric million British thermal unit) in January 2021 to US$33.00 in January 2022. Global urea prices have been soaring to record highs of US$690-794/tonne (Rs51.4-60.4/kg) between October 2021 to March 2022. However, urea for the Indian agriculture sector remained at a subsidised retail price of Rs5.3/kg (US$71/tonne), reflecting the heavy subsidy of more than 90% on the global benchmark price of urea.

ZEFER & H2ME2 Delivers 100 Hydrogen Taxis to Copenhagen

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
28 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

Two pan-European projects have collaborated to bring zero emission hydrogen taxis and a new hydrogen refuelling station to the Danish capital city. The ZEFER (Zero Emission taxi Fleets for European Rollout) and H2ME2 (Hydrogen Mobility Europe) projects, both funded by Europe’s Clean Hydrogen Partnership, have deployed 100 hydrogen taxis in Copenhagen with app-based taxi company DRIVR. The Toyota Mirais run on green hydrogen from renewable energy, following the installation and opening of a new hydrogen refuelling station in the city.

This latest deployment of taxis means the wider ZEFER project has achieved its full complement of 180 FCEVs in high-utilisation, captive fleets across Europe with deployments in three capital cities (Paris, London and Copenhagen). The taxi deployment in Copenhagen will complement 60 taxis previously deployed to Hype by STEP in Paris, and 60 other passenger cars in London deployed between private-hire firm Green Tomato Cars (50) and the Metropolitan Police (10).

To date the 120 vehicles operated under the ZEFER project have driven over 7 million kilometres fuelled only by hydrogen. This high mileage is achieved as the project deliberately targets the very long daily mileage applications which are most suitable to hydrogen vehicles. They have achieved this without major safety or reliability incidents and offering a very attractive user experience. Vehicle performance has been rated highly by drivers and fleet managers, with limited breakdowns or issues encountered relating directly to the hydrogen drivetrain.

The Danish government have targeted all taxis to be zero emission by 2030 and DRIVR recently won the public tender to deliver ad-hoc taxi services in the City of Copenhagen. The 100 new hydrogen taxis will complement DRIVR’s existing fleet of low emission vehicles, already comprising hybrid, electric and hydrogen vehicles.
