Published on :
28 Dec, 2022, 3:30 am

RWE has signed up Port of Blyth as Offshore Construction Base for its 1.4 gigawatts Sofia Offshore Wind Farm. The new-build Offshore Construction Base will be located at Port of Blyth’s recently redeveloped Bates Clean Energy Terminal, and will become the management centre for the RWE project’s vessels and logistics throughout the offshore construction phase in 2024. It will be managed and maintained by Port of Blyth in support of the project throughout the three-and-a-half years’ construction period.

Supporting around-the-clock activities and with immediate and easy marine access, the Sofia Offshore Construction Base will have direct access to the port’s wide range of services as well as the redeveloped terminal's heavy lift quay. Following the completion of the base in March 2023, a state-of-the-art Service Operations Vessel (SOV) will visit the port once every three weeks, during which time there will be a full day of crew transfers and restocking of the vessels. SOVs provide a floating home for offshore construction teams for up to three weeks at a time, ensuring experts are continually available, on site, improving efficiency of project delivery.

Commissioned in December 2000, Blyth was home to the UK’s first offshore wind turbine pilot project, operated at the time by E.ON Climate and Renewables, whose activities have since become part of RWE. Turning full circle, Blyth will now be central to managing the offshore construction activities of RWE’s most modern and cutting-edge offshore wind farm, Sofia, located 195km off the UK coast on Dogger Bank, and which is progressing well with onshore works.

Once construction is finished, RWE will operate the wind farm from its Grimsby Hub, which is being expanded at its base on Royal Dock, Grimsby. However, the buildings will not go to waste and will be retained by the port for future use.

The 1.4GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm project is located on Dogger Bank in the central North Sea, 195km off the North East coast of the UK. The Port of Blyth’s strategic mid North Sea location ensures it is well placed for supporting wind farm developments down the UK’s east coast.

Equinor Marks 5 Years of Hywind Scotland Floating Wind Farm

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
3 Jan, 2023, 3:30 am

World’s first floating offshore wind farm Hywind Scotland has passed five years in operation since its commissioning in 2017. Hywind Scotland, located off the coast of Peterhead, Scotland, is the world’s first floating offshore wind farm and the world’s best-performing offshore wind farm, achieving a capacity factor of 54% over its five years of operations. Importantly, Hywind Scotland has run to high safety standards, marking five years of no loss time injuries during its operation.

With a capacity of 30 MW generated by 5 turbines, Hywind Scotland utilises the Hywind floating spar-substructure concept. The wind farm generates enough electricity to power the equivalent of 34,000 UK homes.

Equinor’s proprietary floating wind turbine motion controller is in action at Hywind Scotland, contributing to world-leading capacity factor performance despite the added motion experienced by floating offshore wind substructures. To maintain the wind farm, Equinor has implemented a unique operations and maintenance (O&M) model, that involves upskilling onshore wind technicians to maintain turbines in an offshore, floating environment.

Equinor is maturing further opportunities to develop floating offshore wind around the world, as pioneers of the emerging technology, and brings with it the experience gained from Hywind Scotland. Equinor’s next floating wind project, Hywind Tampen, delivered first power earlier this fall and when operational in 2023, Equinor will operate about half of the world’s total capacity of floating wind.

Regien Klein Hegeman 4 jan. 2023 Laatste update: 13:37

Updated 1 uur geleden
Vandaag, 12:28
in FINANCIEEL

Storingen

Iberdrola Completes Phase 1 of Saint-Brieuc Offshore Wind

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
13 Jan, 2023, 3:30 am

Iberdrola is progressing according to plan in the construction project in the waters off Brittany in France for the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm. The company has completed the first campaign of the works with the installation of 65% of the piles and 40% of the offshore wind platforms of the plant.

These elements have been manufactured at Windar's facilities in Avilés and Navantia's in Fene, respectively. In total, 124 piles have already been installed, which will anchor the substation and 40 of the 62 wind turbines of the wind farm to the seabed. These cylindrical pieces of steel, eache 2.6 meters in diameter and weighing 150 tonnes, are between 18 and 47 meters long. On them are fitted, with milimetre precision, each of the three-legged platforms that will support the turbinesDuring this first phase, which has just been completed, the installation of 24 of these platforms has also been completed (about 40% of the total planned).

These triangular-based foundations are up to 75 meters high, 25 meters wide and weigh 1,150 tonnes. They are assembled in three stages. The first stage consists of lifting the structure from a transport barge and placing it on site with a crane. During the second stage, the three legs of the frame are inserted into the piles previously fixed to the seabed, ready for the subsequent sealing of the lower parts of the legs. Thanks to their lattice structure, the platforms have a very limited impact on the environment, facilitating the circulation of water masses and biodiversity, while promoting the artificial reef effect.

During the month of January, the project will continue with the installation of the cabling between wind turbines, depending on weather conditions. In mid-January 2023, work is scheduled to begin on laying the wind farm's interconnection cable. In total, 90 kilometers of 66 kV high-voltage alternating current interconnection cables will be commissioned.

Drilling and pile installation work will resume in the first quarter, when anchoring of the remaining 66 piles will begin. Thus, in the second half of the year, work on the offshore wind platforms will resume and the assembly of the wind turbines will begin.

17 Jan, 2023, 3:30 am

Iberdrola has begun commissioning of Polish wind farm Korytnica II, located 80 km from Warsaw in the province of Wegrów, Mazowieckie region. The wind farm comprises 14 Vestas V126 wind turbines, with a hub height of 132 metres and 3.6 MW unit capacity, bringing total capacity of 50.4 MW.In early November, the Korytnica II part at the Pniewnik substation was energised. This enabled first export of power on 20th December, two weeks ahead of schedule, thanks to the excellent performance of Iberdrola team.

During the execution of civil works at Korytnica II, several challenges were overcome to reduce the project’s carbon footprint, including the improvement of soil conditions in some of the foundations and the stabilisation of access roads with soil-cement to avoid the transportation of scarce gravel from hundreds of kilometres away.

Also, circa 70% of the medium voltage trench was piped with directional drilling, as it had to pass through several locations.Korytnica II's output will be sold through a power purchase agreement to Norway's Statkraft, backed by a contract for difference obtained in the fourth auction held in Poland in June 2021.

Full operation of this facility, scheduled for the first quarter of 2023, will bring Iberdrola's onshore wind capacity in Poland to 163 MW. The company already operates the Zopowy wind farm (30 MW) in the Opole region and the aforementioned Korytnica I (82.5 MW).

RWE Secures Lease for Dogger Bank South Offshore Wind Farms

RWE has signed Agreements for Lease with The Crown Estate to develop the two offshore wind farm sites known collectively as Dogger Bank South. DBS East and DBS West are located over 100km offshore in the shallow area of the North Sea known as Dogger Bank. Each project could have an installed capacity of up to 1.5 gigawatts which, when combined, could potentially generate enough clean, green renewable energy to power the equivalent of over 3 million typical UK homes each year.

RWE has already spent almost two years developing the project at its own risk in order to fast-track DBS in support of the UK Government’s net zero aspirations. So far, this has included offshore and onshore studies, collecting metocean data and a series of geophysical and environmental surveys. In July 2022, RWE submitted the Scoping Report for the DBS projects to the Planning Inspectorate which then issued a Scoping Opinion in September 2022.

The results from the Holistic Network Design (HND) process, undertaken by National Grid ESO, were published in July 2022 and identified that connections to the UK electricity network for both projects would be made to a new National Grid substation at a location near the Creyke Beck National Grid substation. Since then, RWE has been engaged in a process of site selection looking at potential locations to house the onshore electrical infrastructure required to transfer the electricity generated by the wind farms into the UK electricity network.

Shortlisted locations and routes are being assessed and will be described in the Preliminary Environmental Impact Report (PEIR), which RWE plans to publish in Spring 2023. The purpose of PEIR is to provide early information to allow stakeholders to develop an informed view of the impacts of the projects. RWE plans to submit an application for Development Consent in 2024.
