Researchers Produce17-4 PH Stainless Steel Using 3D Printer

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the US Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory have found a way to consistently produce 17-4 PH steel, a type of stainless steel with exceptional strength and corrosion resistance, using 3D printing techniques. Their findings have been published in the journal Additive Manufacturing.

To achieve this breakthrough, the researchers used X-ray diffraction technology to monitor and direct the formation of the steel's structure during the printing process. This allowed them to determine its performance and retain all of its high-value characteristics. The PH in 17-4 PH steel stands for precipitation hardening, a heat treatment technique used to make malleable materials stronger. The numbers refer to the alloy's makeup: 17% chromium and 4% nickel. The steel includes nanoparticles that contribute to its signature strength.

Traditionally, producing metal alloys using 3D printing has been challenging, as temperatures change rapidly during the printing process, making it difficult to observe the crystal structure of the atoms within the material. However, using the high-energy X-ray beams produced by the APS, the researchers were able to observe the microstructure development in real-time and make quick adjustments to the printing parameters to obtain the desired microstructure.

The breakthrough could help manufacturers reduce costs and increase flexibility in producing high-performance alloys like titanium alloy and nickel-based superalloy using 3D printing. The researchers believe their results show how user facilities such as the APS can enable the US to have a competitive edge in advancing the next generation of advanced manufacturing technologies.

"We hope our success with this study helps increase the industrial impact of the research coming out of American synchrotron user facilities such as the APS," said Fan Zhang, a physicist at NIST. "If we want to establish American leadership in advanced manufacturing, these facilities are a great asset. Additive manufacturing opens up the design space, allowing us to create complex parts that are often impossible when using conventional technologies. That's the true promise of this breakthrough."

The IOC and Rio Tinto Plasma Burner trial in Labrador City is an excellent project, and I am proud to be involved. As Rio Tinto says; “Research and development are a key part of our race to decarbonise too. We’re trialling a plasma burner in one of our furnaces – the first of its kind, which could help us eliminate heavy fuel oil (bunker-C) from the pelletizing process.” These three very capable and experienced women Marina van Zyl Alana Earle and Erin Duffett are leading this project, a project that could change IOC and Rio Tinto and help transition the industry to green steel.

Lithium-ion battery performance has hit a plateau in recent years, but a breakthrough in technology promises new heights are soon to be in sight.
Batteries made with silicon instead of graphite — the commonly used material in battery anodes today — have been shown to enable significantly higher energy density and faster charging.
"Silicon anode has 10 times higher energy density than graphite," according to CEO Kang Sun of Amprius Technologies, one of the companies working on the technology.
"We've demonstrated that we can charge to 80 percent in under six minutes," added Jon Bornstein, the company's chief operating officer. Amprius is already working with Airbus, the U.S. Army, AeroVironment and BAE Systems on early iterations of its silicon-anode batteries.
Sila Nanotechnologies, which was started by a group of ex-Tesla battery engineers, is also working on silicon-anode technology. The company has been in the market since 2021 with its Titan Silicon product used in the WHOOP fitness tracker. It is now scaling into automotive production.
"Our first automotive customer is going to be Mercedes," CEO and co-founder Gene Berdichevsky said. "They announced a supply agreement with us to put us in their electric vehicles and they're going to start with the iconic G Wagon."
Porsche also plans to use silicon-anode technology in its vehicles, and has invested in Washington state-based Group14 Technologies.
"The head of R&D for Porsche ... said, at Porsche, the soul of the vehicle has been the engine and the transmission ... they believe the next soul of the vehicle is going to be the battery cell," Group14 CEO and co-founder Rick Luebbe said.
All three companies have announced plans to build domestic gigawatt-hour scale manufacturing facilities in the next few years. Funding support has come from the U.S. Department of Energy as part of President Biden's infrastructure bill to boost America's battery supply chains and production.

German Researchers 3D Print Large Steel Part

In the world of 3D printing, researchers are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible. In May 2023, the XXL3DDruck project made a breakthrough in the development of additive manufacturing of extra-large metal components. With a joint effort from research institutes and companies in Germany's Lower Saxony region, they have successfully produced steel components weighing several tons with a giant 3D printer. Using laser assisted arc welding, the XXL printer is able to apply up to 3.2 kilograms of steel per hour and produce parts of a ship gearbox housing weighing up to 3 tons layer by layer.

This new process has the potential to revolutionize manufacturing by reducing the use of material and energy compared to conventional methods. With 3D printing, individual molds are no longer needed, which eliminates an energy-intensive step in the manufacturing process. Additionally, material and weight can be saved by redesigning components with hollow walls, and laser-assisted arc deposition welding can implement individual, component, and customer-specific design requirements.

Not only does XXL printing save resources during production, but it also has the potential to save resources during the operation of the ship. Essentially, if less material is used, the ship needs to accelerate less mass and uses less fuel. The long-term goal for production is to reduce manufacturing and procurement time and save raw materials such as steel by reducing the amount of material used per housing. With this breakthrough in additive manufacturing, the XXL3DDruck project is on its way to achieving these goals.

Future catalysts
HPQ’s immediate next steps in its technological development include improving silicon production yield and final purity to appeal to battery manufacturers and other high-value industries.
Its next test seeks to produce battery-grade silicon in one step, followed by the beginning of technical, economic and operational scaling feasibility studies for the PUREVAP QRR later this year.
As previously mentioned, the company will break ground on its PUREVAP QRR commercial plant in 2024, with an estimated start of commercial production by 2026. It expects to use the initial 2,500 tonnes per year of high-purity silicon produced by the reactor as feedstock for a battery material production line.
Following the onboarding of Novacium in Q3 2022 for R&D assistance and collaboration, HPQ is positioned to enhance its efforts in hydrogen and silicon powder manufacturing, as well as future-oriented innovations.
HPQ’s timeline for fumed silica development can be viewed on slide 20 of its most recent investor presentation.
The company’s future plans regarding silicon powders are laid out in slide 15 of its most recent investor presentation. To facilitate an early move toward production, HPQ and Novacium plan to build an initial 200 TPY production facility for micron-size silicon powders by 2024.
Potential investors should analyze these ambitious plans with a realistic outlook of the multi-year testing success required to make them a reality. That said, given Investissement Québec’s 9.6-per-cent ownership stake in HPQ, the company’s strong technology partners, and the broad addressable markets overdue for innovation, its chances of satisfactory long-term returns merit the full breadth of your due diligence process.
HPQ Silicon (HPQ) has gained over 144 per cent over the past 5 years, despite shedding nearly 50 per cent over the past year.
