DALLAS - Accoya wood, manufactured by Accsys Technologies, recently received an evaluation report ESR-2825 from ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES), providing evidence that Accoya wood meets code requirements. Building officials, architects, contractors, specifiers, designers and others utilize ICC-ES Evaluation Reports to provide a basis for using or approving Accoya wood in construction projects under the International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC).

ICC-ES President Shahin Moinian explains why ICC-ES Evaluation Reports are so important. “Accsys Technologies can now reference the evaluation report to ensure building officials and the building industry that the product meets I-Code requirements,” Moinian said. “Building departments have a long history of using evaluation reports, and ICC-ES operates as a technical resource with the highest quality of product review for the building department. Final approval of building products is always in the hands of the local regulatory agency.”

ICC-ES thoroughly examined Accoya wood’s product information, test reports, calculations, quality control methods and other factors to ensure the product is code-compliant. “We couldn’t be more pleased with confirmation by ICC-ES that Accoya meets building code approval,” said John Alexander, director of sales and head of product development for Accsys Technologies. “The approval is a U.S. validation of similar positions established around the world over the past eight years, in climates as diverse as England, Japan and Australia. This validation is particularly rewarding as it incorporates ground contact and termite field test trial data we set up in Florida and Costa Rica more than five years ago and is a significant point of credibility for Accoya in the U.S. market.”

New fire norm in China paves the way for more wood construction

In September, China approved a new fire norm that paves the way for more wood construction in China. The new norms cover single-family homes and multi-unit buildings as well as laminated timber constructions.
"It's a step in the right direction; we are happy with the current conditions in China, but want to go further. Our goal is a fire norm that matches the Swedish regulations," says Jan Söderlind, International Director for Swedish Wood and Chairman of European Wood.

The Chinese construction market is the world's largest, but wood has been used as a building material to a very low extent. An important explanation of this is that the previous fire norms virtually ruled wood out as a material in larger constructions. The new rules pave the way for more construction of buildings with carcassing, infill walls, wood framework, hybrid constructions and laminated timber constructions.

"European fire experts have worked very closely with the Chinese fire authorities through European Wood. The fact that the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has now approved a new fire norm is a giant leap forward," says Jan Söderlind.

By Swedish measures, the Chinese fire norm is still restrictive. For example, the new rules only allow wood constructions of a maximum of three storeys and interior partitions made of wood may only be used in buildings no higher than six storeys.

For hybrid constructions, the height limit is 24 metres and for laminated timber constructions, it is 15 metres. The permitted maximum size of a laminated board is limited to 180 m2 per storey or 3,600 m2 with a sprinkler system.

"Through European Wood, of which Swedish Wood is a member, and in cooperation with Canada Wood, we will continue to work for the development of the Chinese fire norm. We hope that cross-laminated timber will then also be included," says Jan Söderlind.

Schweiz vereinfacht Brandschutzvorschriften für Holzgebäude

Wie Lignum - Holzwirtschaft Schweiz mitteilt, werden ab 2015 die Brandschutzvorschriften für Holzgebäude in der Schweiz vereinfacht. Der Anwendungsbereich für Holz als Baumaterial wird erweitert. Grund seien die positiven Erfahrungen der Feuerversicherer mit Holzgebäuden. Holz werde jetzt aus Sicht des Baurechts ein normaler Baustoff.

Die 2005 schweizweit eingeführten Brandschutzvorschriften der Vereinigung Kantonaler Feuerversicherungen VKF gaben Holz bis zu einer Feuerwiderstandsdauer von 60 Minuten zur Anwendung frei. Der Markt hat diese markante Öffnung für das Holz rasch aufgenommen.

Seither entstehen jedes Jahr Hunderte großer Wohn-, Büro- oder Schulbauten, oft in gemischten Bauweisen mit Holz. Im Mehrfamilienhausneubau stieg der Anteil der baubewilligten Tragkonstruktionen aus Holz steil von praktisch null auf heute fast 7% an. Im städtischen Raum ist die bisherige baurechtliche Obergrenze von sechs Geschossen im Zeichen eines eigentlichen Holzbau-Booms fast zum Standard geworden.

Feuerversicherer vereinfachen Regelungen für Holzbauten

Nun geht der Prozess zur baurechtlichen Normalisierung des Baustoffs Holz noch einmal einen entscheidenden Schritt weiter. Die Vereinigung Kantonaler Feuerversicherungen VKF überarbeitet alle zehn Jahre die Brandschutzvorschriften. Das nächste, komplett erneuerte VKF-Vorschriftenwerk wird am 1.1. 2015 in allen Kantonen der Schweiz in Kraft treten.

Die neue Vorschriftengeneration BSV 2015 beseitigt aufgrund der positiven Erfahrungen in den letzten zehn Jahren die noch bestehenden Einschränkungen für die Holzanwendung und vereinfacht die für den Holzbau teilweise komplizierten Regelungen für die Planung und Ausführung.

Keine Einschränkung mehr für Holztragwerke

Konkret werden brandschutztechnisch robuste, mit nichtbrennbaren Bekleidungen geschützte Holzbauteile der nichtbrennbaren Bauweise gleichgestellt. Die Vorschriftengeneration BSV 2015 schränkt somit Holztragwerke nicht mehr ein. Auf der Grundlage eines materialunabhängigen Sicherheitsniveaus, das in der Brandschutznorm vorgegeben ist, wird die Verwendung der Baustoffe neu geregelt und die Anwendung von Holz bei Tragwerken, brandabschnittsbildenden Bauteilen, Außenwandbekleidungen, Bedachungen und in der Innenanwendung erweitert.

Die Brandschutzbehörden erkennen damit die Erkenntnisse aus umfangreichen Untersuchungen an, die nachweisen, dass die Brennbarkeit eines Baustoffes nicht das maßgebende Kriterium ist, sondern die brandschutztechnisch korrekte Ausführung einer Konstruktion einen größeren Einfluss auf das Brandverhalten hat. Kurz gesagt, normalisiert sich Holz somit als Baustoff ohne Sonderregelung.

Bauen mit Holz neu in allen Nutzungen möglich

Der Anwendungsbereich für Bauteile mit Holzanteilen erweitert sich über eine Feuerwiderstandsdauer von 60 Minuten hinaus. Damit werden viele Bauten in Holz möglich, deren Erstellung bisher verwehrt blieb. Bis zu einer Gesamthöhe von 30 m können künftig Wohn-, Büro- und Schulhäuser, Industrie- und Gewerbebauten, Beherbergungsbetriebe oder etwa Verkaufsgeschäfte in Holzbau realisiert werden. Selbst bei Hochhäusern ist die Anwendung von tragenden und brandabschnittsbildenden Holzbauteilen mit brennbaren Anteilen unter bestimmten Rahmenbedingungen neu möglich.

Grundlage für die Neuerungen in der Holzanwendung ist das seit 2001 laufende Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekt ‹Brandsicherheit und Holz› der schweizerischen Wald- und Holzwirtschaft zur Sicherung einer hohen Brandsicherheit von Holzbauten und Bauteilen aus Holz. Das Projekt wird unter der Gesamtleitung der Lignum durchgeführt und maßgeblich vom Aktionsplan Holz des Bundesamtes für Umwelt BAFU sowie durch wichtige Institutionen, Verbände und Industriepartner unterstützt.

Ein Bauexperiment in Straagaarden richtet sich schon heute nach den Bauregularien für das Jahr 2020 unter Berücksichtigung einer nachhaltigen Zukunft und eines ganzheitlichen Hausbaupro-jekts, dass nur die naturverträgliche Ressourcen nutzt

Nur einen Steinwurf vom Seebad Gilleje in Nord Seeland, Dänemark entfernt findet man das Bauexperiment Straagaarden; ein nachhaltiges Hausbauprojekt, das einen ganzheitlichen Ansatz unter Berücksichtigung aller Gewerke verfolgt. Dies soll die Grundlage für den Bau neuer Siedlungen darstellen und gleichzeitig klarmachen, dass es Zeit für einen Wechsel im Bausektor ist.

Hinter dem Projekt steht der frühere Pharmazie CEO Erik Pfeiffer, der mit diesem Projekt erreichen möchte, die heutige Bauweise zu überdenken. Die dänische Bauindustrie soll sich auf die Herausforderungen der Zukunft in punkto Nachhaltigkeit, Gesundheit, Gebäudeklima und andere Herausforderungen, die mit dem Klimawandel einhergehen, vorbereiten.

"Mit Straagaarden möchten wir einen ganzheitlichen und nachhaltigen Ansatz im Denken auf die Agenda bringen. Wie sammeln erst das Wissen während wir bereits an den Lösungen für die Zukunft arbeiten. Dies bringt natürlich einige Herausforderung mit sich und man muss sich regelmässig auf den gesunden Menschenverstand verlassen, während man seine Grenzen erweitert" meint der Unternehmer Erik Pfeiffer.

Nachhaltigkeit benötigt erneuerbare Rohstoffe

Es ist eine bewusste Entscheidung, ausschliesslich natürliche Rohstoffe für den Bau von Straagaarden zu verwenden. Diese sollen sich wesentlich von der konventionellen Bauweise in Stahl, Beton und Kunststoff unterscheiden. In Straagarden geht es auch nicht nur um nachhaltige Gebäude - es geht darum, etwas vollkommen neues auf den Weg zu bringen, auch wenn es manchmal etwas altmo-disch erscheint. Dabei darf man sich auch nicht von den vielen Herausforderungen aufhalten lassen, die einem entlang dieses Weges entgegen treten. Wir leben in einer Zeit, wo der Weg vorwärts auch manchmal die Rückbesinnung auf alte Werte in einem neuen Gewand bedeuten kann.

"Wenn sich niemand den Herausforderungen der Zukunft annimmt, dann ist die Gefahr gross, dass wir uns in festgefahrene Strukturen begeben, die wir uns weder umweltmässig noch finanziell auf Dauer erlauben können. Wir müssen Lösungen mit Baustoffen aus der Natur finden. Diese verbessern das Raumklima der Gebäude, sparen Geld und verbrauchen weniger Fläche. Wir sollten nicht denken, dass die heutige Bauweise natürlich ist, sondern wie wir grüne Alternativen für die Zukunft finden", erläutert Erik Pfeiffer.

Das gleiche gilt für den Lieferanten der tragenden Holzstrukturen, Metsä Wood. Metsä Wood denkt in vielerlei Hinsicht so wie die Macher von Straagaarden, sowohl was die Nachhaltigkeit als auch was überholte Bauweisen betrifft.

"Die Welt bewegt sich immer mehr in Richtung Nachhaltigkeit. Leider kommen die dazu benötigten Innovationen zu langsam. Neben den traditionellen Bauregularien hatte Erik Pfeiffer auch mit einer anderen Herausforderung zu kämpfen. In Dänemark werden in fast jedem Gebäudetyp die meisten tragenden Elemente aus Stahl gefertigt. Diese Strukturen mussten durch Holz mit den gleichen oder besseren technischen Werten ersetzt werden. Ein weiteres Hindernis bestand daran, dass diese Holzprodukte vielfach im Dänischen Baurecht nicht geregelt sind.

"Ich musste mich an die die Dänische Niederlassung des Finnischen Holzproduzenten Metsä Wood wenden, um dir richtigen Holzprodukte zu finden. In Finnland unterscheidet sich das Baurecht komplett von dem in Dänemark. Sie haben dort eine lange Holzbautradition und sind es gewöhnt, neue Konstruktionen in Holz zu erstellen. Metsä Wood nutzt die Vielseitigkeit von Holz als Bauprodukt, um gebrauchsfertige Lösungen für den Unternehmer anbieten zu können. Die ist der Grund, warum unsere Wahl zwangsläufig auf Metsä Wood Kerto(R) gefallen ist, eine dimensionsstabile Produktfamilie, mit der man dieselben Strukturen wie mit Stahl erreichen kann", sagt Erik Pfeiffer.

Der Zukunft zugewandt

"Die Bauindustrie hat sich mit immer neuen Rekorden vielleicht in eine falsche Richtung verrannt. Um wieder in die richtige Richtung zu gehen sollte man, wie Erik Pfeiffer, sein Tun etwas hinterfragen. Construction Corner: Wood buildings growing in B.C.

Sometimes, it seems, the Rocky Mountains are more than just a physical barrier in Canada. I have a friend who thinks they're a psychological barrier, which he claims, is why we seem to hear so little of what's happening in British Columbia. Maybe that's why it came as a surprise to me to learn that B.C. is becoming a world leader in construction of tall buildings using wood.

An important part of the recent growth in timber construction is the change, a decade or so ago, from prescriptive building codes to performance-based codes. The prescriptive codes told designers what they had to do.

The performance-based codes let designers do as they wish as long as they can prove that the structure meets specific performance requirements. Wood building, then, could be part of federal and provincial environmental policies and objectives.

Wooden building materials receive more support in China

China's Ministries of Industry and Housing have developed an action plan to promote the production and use of green building materials. The aim is to increase the proportion and quality of green building materials and will focus on energy consumption in manufacturing and the emission of toxic airborne substances.

According to the plan more wooden building will be developed in China in the near future. The use of wooden structures will be promoted in public building such as schools, kindergartens, nursing homes and in landscaping. In addition, wooden rural housing construction will be promoted in existing and new community developments.

In China, biomass building materials will play a prominent role in the implementation of the action plan and new technologies utilising biomass materials will be introduced.

Priority will be given to the development and use of biomass fibre reinforced wood plastic, home interior furnishing and decoration and an expanded role for bamboo in buildings will be explored.
