Rio Tinto to Acquire Rincon Mining Lithium Project

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
30 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am

Rio Tinto has entered into a binding agreement to acquire the Rincon lithium project in Argentina from Rincon Mining, a company owned by funds managed by the private equity group Sentient Equity Partners, for USD 825 million. Rincon is a large undeveloped lithium brine project located in the heart of the lithium triangle in the Salta Province of Argentina, an emerging hub for greenfield projects. The project is a long life, scaleable resource capable of producing battery grade lithium carbonate. It has the potential to have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry that can help deliver on Rio Tinto’s commitment to decarbonise its portfolio.

The direct lithium extraction technology proposed for the project has the potential to significantly increase lithium recoveries as compared to solar evaporation ponds. A pilot plant is currently running at the site and further work will focus on continuing to optimise the process and recoveries.

As the project is currently held through an Argentine branch of an Australian company, completion of the transaction is conditional upon approval by Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board. Subject to this FIRB approval, the transaction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2022.

Rio Tinto Purchases Battery-Electric Trains for the Pilbara

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
17 Jan, 2022, 5:30 am

Rio Tinto has agreed to purchase four battery-electric trains for use in the Pilbara region of Western Australia as part of the company’s strategy to reduce its carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2030. Rio Tinto purchased the four 7MWh FLXdrive battery-electric locomotives from Wabtec Corporation with production due to commence in the United States in 2023 ahead of initial trials in the Pilbara in early 2024.

The locomotives, used to carry ore from the company’s mines to its ports, will be recharged at purpose-built charging stations at the port or mine. They will also be capable of generating additional energy while in transit through a regenerative braking system which takes energy from the train and uses it to recharge the onboard batteries.

A full transition to net zero emissions technology of its entire fleet of rail locomotives would reduce Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s diesel-related carbon emissions in the Pilbara by around 30 per cent annually.

BHP Reports YoY Growth in Iron Ore & Thermal Coal in H1 2021

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
25 Jan, 2022, 5:30 am

BHP has announced operational review for the half year ended 31 December 2021. BHP Chief Executive Officer Mr Mike Henry said "BHP was fatality free at our operated assets for the third consecutive year. Our continuing focus on people and on operational reliability enabled us to achieve near record production in iron ore and to reduce the impacts of adverse weather and COVID-19 related labour constraints in our operations. Cost control remained strong across the business, in the face of a more inflationary environment. Unit cost guidance remains intact bar a change to metallurgical coal which is a function of the lowering of production guidance as a result of significant wet weather and in anticipation of Omicron headwinds in the early part of the second half of the financial year.”

He added “We completed major planned maintenance programs in our Iron Ore, Nickel West and Olympic Dam assets. In Nickel West, we achieved first saleable production of nickel sulphate crystals from the Kwinana plant, an exciting new addition to our product suite that will further enhance our offering into the battery electric vehicle market. The ramp-up of South Flank continues to progress well. The Spence Growth project is realising lower than expected recoveries and we are studying plant design modifications in order to lift recoveries to planned levels.”

BHP Orders Four Battery-Electric Locomotives for WAIO Rail Network

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
26 Jan, 2022, 5:30 am

BHP will purchase four battery-electric locomotives and conduct trials at its Western Australia Iron Ore rail network, as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce its operational emissions. The four locomotives are scheduled for delivery in late 2023. Two will be supplied by BHP’s current provider Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, and two from Wabtec. BHP will test the battery-electric locomotives’ performance and emissions reduction capabilities in delivering iron ore from its Pilbara mines to the Port Hedland export facility. Conducting the trials in collaboration with two leading providers will support BHP’s planned electrification of its iron ore fleet of more than 180 locomotives. A full transition to battery-electric locomotives would reduce BHP’s WA iron ore diesel-related carbon emissions by approximately 30 per cent annually.

The trials will also test unique ‘energy recapture’ opportunities using the rail network’s natural topography to further reduce the trains’ overall power demand. On the way to port, locomotives can capture energy from braking on downhill slopes (energy that would otherwise be lost) and use it to help power empty trains back to the Pilbara.

A fully-laden BHP WA Iron Ore train typically comprises four diesel-electric locomotives pulling approximately 270 cars carrying a total of 38,000 tons of iron ore.

Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, is one of the largest integrated and diversified providers of rolling stock and infrastructure solutions and technologies for global rail customers. Progress Rail delivers advanced EMD locomotives and engines, railcars, trackwork, fasteners, signaling, rail welding and Kershaw Maintenance-of-Way equipment, along with dedicated locomotive and freight car repair services, aftermarket parts support and recycling operations. The company also offers advanced rail technologies, including data acquisition and asset protection equipment.

Wabtec Corporation is focused on creating transportation solutions that move and improve the world. The company is a leading global provider of equipment, systems, digital solutions and value-added services for the freight and transit rail industries, as well as the mining, marine and industrial markets.

Rio Tinto Update in Pilbara Iron Ore Operations in 2021

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
27 Jan, 2022, 5:30 am

Rio Tinto has announced that shipments of 321.6 million tonnes in 2021, Rio Tinto share 267.9 million tonnes, were 3% lower than 2020. Shipments included 36.6 million tonnes of SP10 products. There was 8.8 million tonnes of Pilbara product retained as working capital at China portside as compared to 1.7 million tonnes in 2020. SP10 products comprised a higher share of shipments in the fourth quarter as a result of delays in growth and brownfield mine replacement tie-in projects. As those mines ramp-up through the first half of 2022, we will see SP10 gradually decrease and return to levels around 6% of shipments in the medium term.

Pilbara operations produced 319.7 million tonnes (Rio Tinto share 266.8 million tonnes) in 2021,4% lower than 2020. This was due to above average rainfall in the first half of the year, cultural heritage management and delays in growth and brownfield mine replacement tie-in projects. Ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and a tight labour market have further impacted our ability to access experienced contractors and particular skill sets.

Production from the new greenfields mine at Gudai-Darri and brownfield mine replacement project at Robe Valley, was delayed due to COVID-19 impact on labour availability and an inability to conduct pre-delivery quality assurance and control at international steel manufacturers due to limitations on travel. First ore from Gudai-Darri was railed in December from the modular crushing and screening plant installed to supplement production and mitigate commissioning delays. Robe Valley production was significantly impacted by the Mesa A wet plant commissioning delays.

Approximately 11% of sales in 2021 were priced by reference to the prior quarter's average index lagged by one month. The remainder was sold either on current quarter average, current month average or on the spot market. Approximately 28% of sales in the fourth quarter were made on a free on board (FOB) basis, with the remainder sold including freight.

Achieved realised pricing in 2021 was $132.3 per wet metric tonne on an FOB basis (equivalent to $143.8 per dry metric tonne, at 8% moisture assumption). This compares to the monthly average Platts index for 62% fines converted to an FOB basis of $146.9 per dry metric tonne. In 2020, average realised pricing was $91.0 per wet metric tonne ($98.9 dry metric tonne).

Vale Restarts Mining in Minas Gerais after Rainfall

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
27 Jan, 2022, 5:30 am

Brazilian mining company Vale has announced its decision to partially summarize activities after halting operations due to recent heavy rains in Minas Gerais state. According to the company, appropriate safety conditions have been reestablished for the resumption of its activities. Vale estimates the stoppages in Minas Gerais have affected the production of about 1.5 million tonnes of iron ore.

In Vale's Southeast System all the production has been normalized. On Rio Piracicaba - João Monlevade section of Vitoria-Minas railway, trains have summarized transportation of the production from Brucutu and Mariana mines.

Vale said Abóboras, Vargem Grande, Fábrica and Viga plants were gradually resuming production. They represent about half of the current capacity of the Southern System in the state of Minas Gerais. "The other plants shall summarize their activities in the coming days, after additional work to reestablish adequate operating conditions and normalization of train circulation," according to Vale's statement.

The heavy rains in Minas have caused so far 25 fatalities, according to the latest Civil Defense release. Furthermore, 47,911 people have been displaced and 7,336 are homeless. 377 municipalities, almost half of the state, have declared a state of emergency.

BHP Iron Ore Production in H1 of FY 2021 up by 1%

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
28 Jan, 2022, 5:30 am

BHP announced that total iron ore production increased by one per cent to 129 million tonnes in H1 of 2021 FY. Guidance for the 2022 financial year remains unchanged at between 249 million tonnes and 259 million tonnes.

WAIO finished the half year at near record production levels at 127 million tonnes, 144 million tonnes on a 100 per cent basis, despite impacts of temporary labour constraints relating to COVID-19 border restrictions and the planned major maintenance on car dumper one and the Jimblebar train load out. This reflects continued strong supply chain performance including higher car dumper performance and improved rail cycle times. South Flank ramp up to full production capacity of 80 million tonnes, 100 per cent basis, over three years remains on track with a peak rate of 45 million tonnes achieved in the half year contributing to record lump sales. In December 2021, BHP approved the South Flank Autonomous Haulage Project to automate the current fleet of Komatsu haul trucks. The project is scheduled to commence in the June 2022 quarter and is expected to be completed within 18 months. The proposed easing of Western Australia's border restrictions on 5 February 2022 may introduce some short-term disruption to the operating environment as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves in the state.

Samarco production was 2.1 million tonnes, BHP share, following the recommencement of iron ore pellet production at one concentrator in December 2020. Guidance of between 3-4 million tonnes, BHP share, remains unchanged for the 2022 financial year.

EcoGraf announces goal to reduce steelmaking emissions

EcoGraf, future supplier of eco-friendly battery products, revealed how it is looking to drastically reduce the level of emissions associated with the production of steel.

The company announced the first GreenRECARB products had passed the specification test for use as an environmentally ‘superior’ replacement for petroleum coke furnace additives.

Petroleum coke furnace additives are associated with high carbon emissions, as well as polluting materials such as sulphur and nitrogen. However, EcoGraf managing director Andrew Spinks says by using natural graphite as a feedstock, carbon emissions are substantially reduced.

This comes at a time when steel manufacturers continue to seek more sustainably produced additive materials to replace the use of energy intensive, fossil-fuel based calcined petroleum coke products.

“Our material comes from natural graphite, it’s pure carbon, and there are lower impurities compared to existing coke products used to increase the carbon content of steel'”

Andrew Spinks, EcoGraf managing director
“Our material comes from natural graphite, it’s pure carbon, and there are lower impurities compared to existing coke products used to increase the carbon content of steel,” Spinks said.

“It is also a by-product through the manufacturing of purified spherical graphite at our planned battery anode material facility in Western Australia. So at the moment we have developed a flow sheet to create this recarburiser product as a green alternate carbon additive material for the steel industry, which is the critical first step and we have developed a product specification material data sheet and product samples for our customers,” he stated.

Key advantages of GreenCARB are claimed to include its high purity with reduced sulphur and nitrogen levels, improved carbon absorption efficiency, and low emission manufacturing process compared to existing coke products, which ultimately reduces the carbon footprint of the steel manufacturing process.

“If our customers accept the material, EcoGraf will move forward to a detailed engineering design to incorporate in our battery anode materials facility in Western Australia.”

Andrew Spinks, EcoGraf managing director
“If our customers accept the material, EcoGraf will move forward to a detailed engineering design to incorporate in our battery anode materials facility in Western Australia,” Spinks commented.

With the steel manufacturing industry being one of the highest polluters, he said he hopes greenRECARB will play an important role in the push towards ‘green steel’.

18 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

Brazilian mining giant Vale started the works to eliminate the first of five upstream structures planned to be de-characterized and reintegrated into the environment this year alone. As a result, the company expects to end 2022 with 40% of its structures of this type eliminated. This means that 12 of the 30 dams mapped will already be de-characterized. Work begun on 7 February on Dike 4 of the Pontal dam in Itabira. Dike 4 of the Pontal System, in Itabira, is one of five upstream structures planned to be eliminated in 2022

The de-characterization of all upstream dams is one of the pillars of the principle of guaranteeing the non-repetition of dam collapses such as the one in Brumadinho, with the safety of people, workers and the environment as top priority.

Since 2019, seven upstream structures - four in Minas Gerais and three in Pará - have been eliminated, out of the 30 mapped, practically 25% of the company's De-characterization Program. For 2022, the company expects to complete the de-characterization of dykes 3 and 4 of the Pontal System and Ipoema dam, in Itabira (MG), the Baixo João Pereira Dam, in Congonhas (MG), and the Auxiliary Dike of Dam 5, in Nova Lima (MG).
