BHP Reports Robust Iron Ore Production in Q1

Australian mining giant BHP Billiton recently released production results for the first nine months of the financial year 2022-2023. According to the announcement, BHP Billiton's iron ore production increased by 1.3% year on year to 191.7 million metric tonnes, buoyed by a strong supply chain performance. However, the temporary suspension of operations offset this increase. "We delivered another strong performance this quarter, with record iron ore production from our Western Australian Iron Ore operations," said BHP Billiton's CEO, Mr. Mike Henry. "Our consistent operational delivery continues to underpin our strong financial results."

Notably, Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO), one of BHP Billiton's subsidiaries, achieved a record production of 212.6 million metric tonnes in the nine-month period. Despite the occurrence of tropical cyclones, no significant damage or injuries were reported at the WAIO sites.

BHP Billiton expects its iron ore production to remain unchanged for the financial year 2022-2023, ranging between 249 million metric tonnes and 260 million metric tonnes.

On the other hand, BHP Billiton's metallurgical coal production decreased by 27% year on year to 20.5 million metric tonnes due to rainy weather. Nonetheless, production is expected to range between 29 million metric tonnes and 32 million metric tonnes in the same financial year, remaining unchanged.

Anglo American ziet productie stijgen

Rio Tinto to Invest in Seawater Desalination Plant in Pilbara

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
6 Jun, 2023, 2:38 am

Rio Tinto has unveiled its intention to invest $395 million in a seawater desalination plant in Western Australia's Pilbara region, aiming to secure future water supply for the company's coastal operations and communities in the area. The proposed Dampier Seawater Desalination Plant, subject to Commonwealth and State Government approvals, will be situated within Rio Tinto's existing iron ore port operations at Parker Point. Initially, it will have a nominal capacity of four gigalitres per year, with the potential to expand to eight gigalitres in the future. The project also includes the construction of a new supply pipeline to connect to the existing water network.

Pending the necessary approvals, construction is expected to commence in 2024, with the plant becoming operational and producing water by 2026. During the peak of construction, the project is anticipated to provide employment opportunities for approximately 300 individuals.

Rio Tinto has been actively engaging with the associated Traditional Owners and Custodians regarding the project. The company expresses gratitude to the Ngarluma people, on whose Traditional lands the plant will be built, and the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation, representing the five Traditional Owner groups in the region.

Water from the desalination plant will be transferred to the West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme, owned and operated by the Water Corporation, and subsequently distributed to Rio Tinto's coastal communities and operations.

The plant will be constructed on previously reclaimed land and will utilize reverse osmosis technology to remove salt and other impurities from ocean water. Leveraging existing infrastructure at Rio Tinto's Parker Point operations and its proximity to the Water Corporation network, the project aims to minimize disruption to the local environment.

Simon Trott, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Iron Ore, emphasizes the scarcity of water resources, particularly in the Pilbara, and expresses satisfaction that the desalination plant will contribute to securing future water supply for Rio Tinto-supplied communities and coastal operations in the West Pilbara.

The planned $395 million investment in the plant is included in the Group's Sustaining Capital expenditure.

BHP and Microsoft to Enhance Copper Recovery with Digital Tech

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
7 Jun, 2023, 6:42 am

In a groundbreaking collaboration, BHP and Microsoft have embarked on a venture utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance copper recovery at the largest copper mine worldwide.

The application of cutting-edge digital technology to optimize concentrator performance at BHP's Escondida operation in Chile holds the potential to significantly improve copper recovery.

Laura Tyler, BHP's Chief Technical Officer, emphasized the team's position to generate greater value from existing resources by harnessing the capabilities of new digital technology in conjunction with innovative work practices.

"As grades decline at established copper mines and the number of economically viable discoveries diminishes, the next generation of technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics will be instrumental in unlocking additional production and value from our current mines," she stated.

According to BHP, the demand for copper is projected to double over the next 30 years compared to the previous three decades, driven by the advancement of decarbonization technologies like electric vehicles, offshore wind farms, and solar farms, as assumed in its 1.5-degree scenario.

John Montgomery, CVP of AI Platform at Microsoft, expressed excitement about the transformative nature of the project, highlighting the power of AI, machine learning, and cloud technologies in this collaboration with BHP.

By combining real-time plant data from the concentrators with AI-based recommendations from Microsoft's Azure platform, the operators at Escondida will have the ability to adjust operational variables that impact ore processing and grade recovery.

BHP, positioned as one of the world's top three copper producers, boasts the largest copper endowment among global companies. For over three decades, BHP has successfully operated Escondida, an open-cut mine situated in the Atacama Desert in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile.

BHP’s Context-Based Water Targets for Sustainable Water Management

By Strategic Research Institute on Jun 14, 2023 11:19 am

On the occasion of World Environment Day, BHP, a leading global resources company, is proud to unveil their latest endeavor: asset-level context-based water targets (CBWT). In contrast to the widely accepted metric for tracking greenhouse gas emissions, measuring water risk and performance lacks a single agreed-upon standard. Recognizing this gap, BHP has developed context-based water targets that take into account the local context of their operated assets, aligning with the United Nations Global Compact CEO Water Mandate guide.

These new targets are designed to conserve and enhance local water resources, ensuring their resilience to sustain healthy ecosystems, cultural significance, and economic activities. BHP's commitment to setting context-based water targets stems from their diverse range of operations, spanning various environments such as deserts, sub-tropical regions, and marine habitats. Anne Dekker and Mischa Traynor, Joint Vice Presidents Environment, emphasize the collaborative nature of this initiative, with inputs from stakeholders and a thorough assessment of water-related risks and opportunities.

The context-based water targets encompass actions to improve operational water performance, including enhancing water efficiency. Moreover, they promote actions that benefit stakeholders in the region, such as sharing environmental data on water and biodiversity with governments and other companies. BHP plans to implement these targets at their Western Australia Iron Ore operations, with a focus on prioritizing at least 50% of surplus water for beneficial use, thereby improving the sustainability of regional groundwater resources and generating social value.

BHP acknowledges that the approach to setting meaningful and effective corporate targets, both for water and nature conservation, is evolving. As the global community advances in its understanding, BHP is proud to embrace preferred practices and take practical steps towards achieving positive on-the-ground impact. These context-based water targets align with BHP's 2030 Healthy Environment goal, as they contribute to the protection and restoration of water-dependent ecosystems near their operated assets.

Earlier this year, BHP also released its Water Resources Situational Analysis (WRSA) reports, further showcasing their dedication to transparent and accountable water management practices. To learn more about BHP's water initiatives and access the WRSA reports and CBWT, visit their website.

Video: cyclische aandelen bieden kansen
12-apr-2024 18:23
