SSE Sells Stake in Walney Offshore Wind Farm to Greencoat

In line with its stated intention in June 2020 to dispose of £2bn of assets by Autumn 2021, SSE has agreed to sell its 25.1% non-operating stake in Walney Offshore Wind Farm to Greencoat UK Wind Plc, subject to a completion process which it expects will take place shortly. The stake equates to 92MW of capacity and the total consideration is GBP 350 million. The sale of Walney marks the first stage of SSE’s disposal plans. As previously announced, a significant part of the disposal programme will be non-core assets. As essentially a financial investment, Walney clearly falls into this category. The transaction is indicative of the quality and optionality contained in SSE’s portfolio of projects and assets, demonstrating its ability to deliver value through disposals.

Following the disposal of SSE’s stake in Walney, SSE's renewable generation capacity will be around 3.9GW. SSE’s current offshore wind portfolio comprises Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm (504MW, SSE share 50%) and Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm (588MW, SSE share 40%), both of which it operates on behalf of its joint venture partners.

Securing value and cash proceeds from timely disposals will support SSE’s GBP 7.5 billion five-year capital expenditure plans to invest in core strategic assets that will support the ongoing transition to net zero emissions. As part of this, SSE’s renewable capacity is set to grow with investments in: Seagreen (1,075MW, SSE share 49%) and Dogger Bank offshore wind farms (3,600MW, SSE share 50%), as well as the Viking onshore wind farm on Shetland (443MW, SSE share 100%). SSE is leading on the development and construction of all three projects.

Walney is a 367MW offshore wind farm located off the west coast of the United Kingdom, approximately 15km from the coastline of Walney Island. Ownership currently comprises: Orsted (50.1%), PGGM (24.8%); and SSE Renewables (25.1%). The wind farm was completed in two phases, Walney 1, which entered commercial operations in July 2011, followed by Walney 2 in June 2012. Walney consists of 102, 3.6MW Siemens Gamesa turbines. Its average load factor is around 45%.

Nordex Group Tests Gearboxes of N149/4.0-4.5 Turbines

As part of the regular validation and certification process for its turbines in the Delta4000 series, the Nordex Group has replaced the gearboxes first installed in two N149/4.0-4.5 turbines in Wennerstorf, Lower Saxony, Germany. The turbines installed at this site in 2018 are the world’s first Delta4000 turbines of this model.

The turbines have been in operation since August and November 2018 respectively and are subjected to a detailed assessment of their condition after the first 15 and 24 months of operation. To this end, the manufacturer expertly dismantles the gearboxes into all individual parts in order to perform a qualified assessment with the bearing manufacturers and Nordex experts. The aim is to ensure the theoretically determined reliability and to incorporate early findings from the operation of the gearboxes into the series production and the further development of wind turbines with more than 4MW rated power. In addition to this, the Nordex Group obtains relevant information confirming the gearbox design and on optimising maintenance. The drive train is designed in such a way that gearboxes from different manufacturers can be installed. These planned gearbox exchanges give the Nordex Group an opportunity to install gearboxes from different manufacturers and to test and compare their behaviour and efficiency in real operation.

In the Wennerstorf wind farm the first turbine gearbox was exchanged in February 2020 and the second one in an adjacent turbine was now replaced in September as planned.

It was the second time a so-called “self-hoisting crane”, which is installed on the turbine’s nacelle, has been used to exchange 4 MW+ gearboxes. This self-hoisting crane climbs up the turbine tower on its own hoist rope and installs itself on the topside of the nacelle. This means that it can be rapidly mobilised, requires little space on the ground and is less expensive to use. This solution has an advantage over conventional cranes, especially in remote regions, for turbines with very high towers or in countries where crane costs are generally high.

Eyemouth O&M Building for NnG Wind Farm Approved

Scottish Borders Council’s planning committee has approved plans jointly submitted by Neart na Gaoithe Offshore Wind Limited and Eyemouth Harbour Trust for an Operations and Maintenance building for the offshore wind farm in Eyemouth. A significant milestone for NnG, jointly owned by EDF Renewables and ESB, this development sees Eyemouth Harbour move a step closer to housing the project’s O&M base. The planning permission is for a new, three storey, 1,040 square metre main building and a two storey, 538 square metre storage warehouse.

The O&M building, designed by Corstorphine + Wright Architects, will house the office, warehousing and staff welfare facilities required to support the servicing of NnG once the wind farm is operational.

The investment in Eyemouth will bring an economic boost to the area providing up to 50 permanent jobs over the 25-year lifespan of the project. Additional benefits would see training, retraining and apprenticeship opportunities available to the residents of Eyemouth and the surrounding area.

NnG will supply enough low carbon electricity for around 375,000* homes and has a capacity of c. 450 megawatts (MW) of low carbon energy and will offset over 400,000 tonnes of Co2 emissions each year.

GE Renewable Energy, EDF Renewables & Enbridge Celebrate First Nacelle for Offshore Wind Farm at Saint Nazaire

Jerome Pecresse, President and CEO of GE Renewable Energy, as well as Bruno Bensasson, EDF Group Senior Executive Vice-President Renewable Energies, representing the consortium formed by EDF Renewables and Enbridge, celebrated the production of the first GE Renewable Energy nacelle, for the future SaintNazaire wind farm implemented by EDF Renewables-Enbridge. This nacelle, which contains the generator, is the first in a series of Haliade 150-6 MW wind turbines, produced for the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm, to be assembled by GE Renewable Energy at the Montoir-de-Bretagne production site. This wind farm, already under construction for one year, will be composed of 80 wind turbines spaced one kilometer apart and located 12 to 20 km off the coast. When it goes operational in 2022, it will produce enough power to supply 20% of the electricity consumption of the Loire-Atlantique department.

A new stage in the structuring of the French offshore wind farm industry, providing positive economic impact in the Pays de la Loire region and a showcase for French knowhow.

The Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm contributes to boosting the region’s economic activity, generating a total of over 1,000 local jobs during the construction phase. This project takes GE Renewable Energy, EDF Renewables and Enbridge into a new phase of French wind farm industry development. Following three projects attributed to the consortium led by EDF Renewables in 2012, GE Renewable Energy was the first company to invest in wind turbine assembling plants in France. Over 500 GE Renewable Energy employees will participate in the creation of this first French offshore wind farm, in the Montoir-de-Bretagne nacelle assembly plant as well as at the Nantes GE office (engineering, sourcing, quality, services) which currently employs over 200 persons. 200 new jobs will be added to this workforce when the Saint-Nazaire plant is fully loaded.

While GE Renewable Energy production continues, earthworks are being finalized in preparation for the storage and assembly of the wind turbine components in the port of Saint-Nazaire. The wind turbines will be stocked there starting in 2021.

Installation at sea will begin in 2021 with anchoring of the foundations and burying the interturbine cables. Then, the electric substation will be installed in the sea during the summer. In spring 2022, the first wind turbines could be installed offshore and progressively commissioned. This start-up process will last until year-end.

The next 25-year operations and maintenance phase will then begin. About 100 sustainable jobs will be created for daily operations related to the maintenance base located at the port of La Turballe. The agreement between EDF Renewables, Enbridge and GE Renewable Energy also covers the multi-year contract for wind farm turbine maintenance services.

Turbine Size Matters in Offshore Wind Power Projects – Rystad

A Rystad Energy analysis shows that although they are more expensive to manufacture, choosing these giant turbines actually reduces overall costs for large-scale offshore wind farms. Their added costs are expected to be mitigated by fewer required units and the efficiency gains associated with the newer, more technologically advanced turbines. For every project, there is also the cost of manufacturing a number of foundations, so the reduction in the number of turbines will also lead to fewer array cabling runs, which in turn reduces the installation scope. Rystad Energy analyzed the cost of using turbines of differing sizes for the case of a 1 gigawatt offshore project. The SG 14-222 DD model will leapfrog GE’s new 12 MW Haliade-X prototype and become the largest turbine available, globally. At the moment, the largest turbines to be commissioned between 2020 and 2021 have nameplate capacities of up to 10 MW.

Utilizing 14 MW turbines instead of 10 MW ones, the number of units required for a 1 GW project falls by 28 units, from 100 to 72. Moving to a 14 MW turbine from a 12 MW turbine still offers a reduction of nearly 11 units. Overall, the analysis shows that using the largest turbines for a new 1 GW windfarm offers cost savings of nearly $100 million versus installing the currently available 10 MW turbines.

In this example, Rystad assumed that the cost of a turbine is approximately $800,000 per MW on average for currently available units (i.e. turbines with up to 10 MW nameplate capacities), with a 2.5% premium applied for each additional MW for the larger units expected in the medium-term, to reflect anticipated efforts by manufacturers to capture upside.

Thus, for this analysis Rystad estimated that the cost of a 10 MW turbine is USD 8 million, while a 12 MW and a 14 MW turbine would cost approximately USD 10.1 million and USD 12.3 million, respectively. Therefore, moving from a 10 MW turbine to a 14 MW turbine could result in higher costs of approximately USD 85 million for manufacturing, while utilizing a 14 MW turbine in lieu of a 12 MW unit could add almost USD 45 million to manufacturing costs.

Foundations are the main components that offer opportunities for cost reductions if larger turbines are utilized. Rystad Energy estimates that a foundation typically costs between USD 3 million and USD 4 million, with variations relating largely to foundation type and water depth. In a 10 MW to 14 MW switch, such cost savings could surpass USD 100 million for the developer, while savings in a 12 MW to 14 MW scenario would likely range from USD 30 million to USD 50 million.

The cost of array cables varies based on the turbine size. While the use of larger turbines implies potential cost savings through fewer foundations, the added length required for array cables for 14 MW turbines is likely to keep overall cable costs flat. However, the lower turbine count reduces the number of cabling runs and connection of turbines to the offshore substation, which in turn could cut installation costs.

This example shows that while larger units are expected to drive up the cost of turbines, reductions from other segments, namely foundations, could result in cost savings of USD 100 million to USD 120 million on manufacturing alone, helping to offset some of the developer’s expenses.

Rystad Energy also estimates that the cost to install a turbine ranges between USD 0.5 million to USD 1 million, while the cost of foundation installation ranges from USD 1 million to USD 1.5 million per unit. Using the midpoint in each range, for a 1 GW project the implied savings surpass USD 50 million if using 14 MW instead of 10 MW units. Under similar circumstances but comparing 14 MW against 12 MW turbines, potential savings are beyond USD 20 million. Furthermore, the reduction in cabling runs and connections due to the lower number of array cables could lead to additional savings of between USD 5 million and USD 15 million when using 14 MW turbines rather than 12 MW and 10 MW turbines.

On top of potential cost savings from the reduction in units, the increase in turbine size can also drive other efficiency gains. Rystad Energy has analyzed the potential reduction in the levelized cost of energy using Equinor’s Empire Wind in the US as a case study. In this case, using 10 MW turbines, the estimated LCOE is approximately USD 75/MWh. Opting instead for 12 MW turbines, the LCOE falls to approximately USD 71/MWh. With a further upgrade to 14 MW turbines, the LCOE is estimated to be USD 68/MWh. Thus, with the incremental increases in size, turbines and offshore wind plants become more economical – not just in lower upfront costs, but also in longer-term power generation potential.

Ramboll Adopts COBOD 3D Print Technology for Wind Turbine Towers

Ramboll will deliver a new design concept that adopts the 3D printing technology to construct wind turbine towers to GE Renewable Energy, one of the largest companies in the onshore wind market worldwide. The demand for taller wind turbine towers in the onshore wind market has led to a request for innovative tower concepts. The concepts available today are hybrid solutions made in prefabricated concrete and steel which are limited regarding geometry and weight due to transportation restrictions and require extensive manual labour for the installation. However, this is not the case in a recently won project by Ramboll for the client GE Renewable Energy in the US.

The 3D printer used in this project is developed by the Danish company, COBOD, a global leading expert within development and fabrication of 3D printers in close collaboration with Ramboll. The concrete mix will be developed by another globally leading company, Lafarge-Holcim.
3D print technology enables lower construction costs and increased quality

Using 3D print technology leads to increased value for the project and the client.

3D print technology is predicted to become one of the most central next-generation construction methods for load-bearing structures. With the new innovative design concept for wind turbine towers, Ramboll has an opportunity to help laying the foundation for this development.

Three Major Scottish Energy Projects Underway - SSE

SSESSE announced that work has begun on three major Scottish energy construction projects worth more than GBP 4 billion. The developments, the GBP 3 billion Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm near Angus, the GBP 580 million Viking Onshore Wind Farm on Shetland and the GBP 630 million subsea power cable connecting the island to the Scottish mainland, will ramp up as Scottish Climate Week gets underway this week. Once completed they will provide electricity for around 1.5 million UK homes, and support more than 1,000 direct, contractor and supply chain jobs, many of which will start in the near term, coming at a vital time to help kickstart the UK’s green economic recovery from coronavirus.

More than 1,000 jobs are being created across the three projects with many long-term, highly skilled roles being created in island and coastal communities. All three are also delivering big supply chain contracts for UK businesses, including Glasgow based RJ McLeod, Aberdeen based Seaway 7 and Montrose Port, with more to come.

Viking will be the UK's largest onshore wind farm in terms of annual electricity output, and includes a commitment from turbine supplier Vestas to develop an apprentice programme on Shetland as part of their contract. Seagreen 27km from the Angus coast, is being built in partnership with Total and will inherit the title of Scotland’s largest offshore wind from SSE’s other offshore wind farm, Beatrice, near Wick.

The 600MW Shetland electricity transmission link will be delivered by SSE’s networks business, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Transmission and will connect Shetland to the mainland electricity grid for the first time ever. It will enable renewable electricity to be exported from the island to the rest of Britain, as well as clean and green power for the communities living there.
