ANP Producties - 48 minuten geleden
© ANP

First Turbine Commissioned at RWE’s Kaskasi Offshore Wind

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
11 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am

35 kilometres north of the island of Heligoland, the first turbine of RWE’s Kaskasi offshore wind farm was recently commissioned, and is now supplying green electricity to the grid. Nine of the in total 38 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD Flex offshore wind turbines are installed, each with a capacity of close to 9 megawatts. Kaskasi is RWE’s sixth wind farm off the German coast. When fully operational by the end of 2022, Kaskasi will be capable of supplying the equivalent of more than 400,000 German households with green electricity every year. This is comparable to a large city like Frankfurt am Main.

RWE is leading the technological development in the offshore wind industry. Together with Siemens Gamesa, the Kaskasi project now features the world’s first installed recyclable wind turbine blades. The components of the 81-meter long RecyclableBlades are able to be recycled for new applications at the end of their lifecycle. RWE and Siemens Gamesa are helping to pave the way towards the full recyclability of wind turbines.

Many components of a wind turbine already have established recycling practices. Until now, the composite materials used in wind turbine blades have been more challenging to recycle. The resin system employed binds all components together. In its RecyclableBlade, Siemens Gamesa uses a resin type with a chemical structure that makes it possible to efficiently separate it from other components following decommissioning. The process protects the properties of the materials, allowing them to be reused in new casting applications, for example in the automotive industry or in consumer goods like flight cases and flatscreen casings.

ANP Producties - 1 uur geleden
© ANP

UK hits 25.5 GW of wind power capacity
Wind turbines in UK. Author: .Martin. License: Creative Commons. Attribution-NoDerivs 2.0 Generic

August 12 (Renewables Now) - The UK’s combined onshore and offshore wind capacity has topped 25 GW, rising from 15 GW in 2017, industry group RenewableUK said today.

The milestone was reached thanks to RWE’s 857-MW Triton Knoll offshore wind farm and three onshore wind parks in Scotland -- the 37.8-MW Twentyshilling, 43.2-MW Windy Rig and 48.5-MW Glen Kyllachy -- of Greencoat Wind UK.

The UK now has 25,530 MW of wind capacity in operation. This is enough to power 19 million households a year, or two-thirds of UK homes, the trade body calculates. The wind turbines generate 71.2 TWh of electricity a year, representing 23% of the UK’s annual needs.

“Wind is the cheapest source of new power for the UK, as last month’s record-breaking auction for the next round of renewable energy projects showed,” said RenewableUK’s chief executive Dan McGrail. “So we need to get on with building bigger clean energy projects faster, to help ease the pain for consumers faced with exorbitant gas bills which many people will be unable to pay,” he added.

McGrail said onshore wind farms can be built within 12 months of being permitted and called for a revised planning system to encourage new projects, as well as for streamlining the consenting process for offshore wind farms.

The UK’s total pipeline of wind projects, from those in operation to those in early development, is put at 129 GW, of which 93.3 GW offshore.

Published on :
22 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am

The Nordex Group has installed its Xtended Power Upgrade to 52 wind turbines with a total capacity of 135.5 MW across two wind farms in Ireland. This upgrade increases annual energy production for its client Greencoat Renewable by up to 0.8%, despite severe grid-related production constraints. At the wind farms Glencarbry and Knockacummer in the Republic of Ireland, GRP operates N90/2500 Gamma series turbines, as well as N100/3300 Delta machines which were built between 2014 and 2017. Within the framework of GRP’s Performance Enhancement Strategy, the client decided to equip the turbines with Nordex Xtended Power Upgrade.

Following Nordex’ detailed analysis of the potential for the specific optimization of each project in summer 2021, the nominal power of all the wind turbines was increased just a few months later, thanks to this upgrade. The turbines will now be able to produce additional clean electricity.

Greencoat has been actively focused on their global performance optimization plan over the past months and this has generated significant increases in their base case model. These optimizations have been categorized in different buckets as PPA, Revenues, Opex and, in this instance, “Generation”, leading to a turbine upgrade on several Nordex wind turbines across the portfolio. Greencoat is very pleased with this successful collaboration with the Nordex Group.

Since 2019, the Group has offered its clients with Delta generation turbines Xtended Power Delta as an optional package. To date, more than 180 wind turbines have been uprated across Europe. Since the end of last year, the company has also offered Xtended Power Gamma for N90/2500 previous-generation Gamma machines. Thanks to the higher nominal power provided by the Xtended Power upgrade, annual energy production can be increased by up to 3%.

Greencoat Renewables is an investor in euro-denominated renewable energy infrastructure assets. Initially focused solely on the acquisition and management of operating wind farms in Ireland, the Company is now also investing in wind and solar assets in certain other European countries with stable and robust renewable energy frameworks. It is managed by Greencoat Capital, an experienced investment manager in the listed renewable energy infrastructure sector.

24 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am

The Iberdrola group continues to make progress in the construction of the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, the second major site of this technology that the company is developing in the Baltic Sea offshore Germany. The project has reached a new milestone with Windar having completed 90% of the manufacturing work on the 50 transition parts of the wind farm, which will join the wind turbine towers to the foundations. This work, which is being carried out at Windar's facilities in Avilés, will involve 1.3 million hours of work, the equivalent of 800 jobs.

Some 30 suppliers of the Asturian company in Spain are participating in the process, including steel production companies, components, equipment, testing and auxiliary machinery. The production of these parts, each of which is 15 metres high, 6.5 metres in diameter and weighs 240 tonnes, will continue until the end of this year. Windar will also be responsible for supplying the transition parts for the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind farm that Iberdrola is developing in the United States off the coast of Massachusetts, which, with 800 megawatts of power, will be the first commercial-scale facility of its kind in the country.

In addition, the Asturian company has manufactured the piles for the Saint-Brieuc wind farm 500 MW, the Iberdrola group's first large offshore wind farm in France, as part of the contract awarded to the Navantia-Windar consortium for the development of this project, which has created more than 1,000 direct jobs in Avilés and Fene.

These awards are in addition to the framework contract reached between Iberdrola and Navantia-Windar for the manufacture and supply of 130 XXL monopiles. In total, Iberdrola has so far awarded contracts worth more than USD 1 billion to this consortium, including the orders already completed for East Anglia One in the UK and Wikinger in the Baltic Sea.

With a capacity of 476 MW, Baltic Eagle will have 50 wind turbines with a unit capacity of 9.53 MW on monopiles, for an annual production of 1.9 TWh, enough to sustainably meet the demand of 475,000 households and avoid the emission of almost one million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year.
