Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
21 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

Leading UK crew transfer operator HST has taken delivery of the first of a new class of Damen Multi Cat, the 2309. The addition of the Multi Cat to its fleet of Crew Transfer Vessels is the first stage of HST’s strategy to become a total solutions provider to the offshore renewables sector. The new vessel, named HST Hazel after the daughter of HST operations director Chris Monan, was built at Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld in the Netherlands. It will initially be based out of HST’s home port of Swansea, supporting clients in Wales and south-western England.

Damen’s Multi Cat range is well-known for its versatility, and the 2309 represents a new, mid-range model that is ideal for a wide range of tasks. HST’s new asset now allows them to offer its clients workboat services such as marine logistics and general contracting alongside its crew transfer business. In order to give its clients a premium service, HST has added some custom features to their new vessel, including Volvo Penta engines for added efficiency and emissions reductions. These can also be easily converted for IMO Tier III compliance. The bow thruster has also been upgraded for enhanced manoeuvrability and the crew cabins have been fitted with satellite television and high-speed interconnectivity with fleet system and VSAT.

Additional equipment upgrades include a five-tonne pull winch and a heavy duty crane with a lifting capacity of 25 tonnes at 5.8 metres outreach. On the aft deck a tugger winch with 12 tonnes of pull has been installed along with an A-frame with plough for cable laying. Additional redundancy throughout the vessel is another feature, ensuring both reliability and versatility.

DEME JV Bag Dredging & Coastal Defence Contract in Port of Livorno

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
07 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

A substantial contract for dredging and coastal defence works in the Port of Livorno has been awarded to a joint venture including SIDRA, the Italian company of the DEME Group. Believed to be the biggest dredging project in the country, this award relates to the first phase of the Piattaforma Europa project with the construction of Darsena Europa, a large port expansion and considered the new Tuscan gateway.

The project will eventually encompass 3 km of docks, two large terminals and 2 million m² of new port areas. DEME’s scope represents approximately 16 million m³ of dredging volumes and additionally, the joint venture is responsible for the construction of two new breakwaters (Diga Nord and Diga Sud) and the relocation of the Meloria breakwater (in total 6 km of breakwater construction).

The dredging operations, starting in 2023, are designed to provide the foundations for the new breakwaters, and to deepen the access channel to -17 m and the internal basins and docks to -16 m. A sizeable part of the dredged materials will be used for beach nourishment works along the Pisan coast, highlighting DEME’s focus on the circular economy. The remaining materials will be deposited inside the newly created basin, creating a foundation for a future platform.

DEME will deploy several cutter suction dredgers and a trailing suction hopper dredger at the project.

Van Oord Awarded Land Reclamation Project in Maldives

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
25 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

Van Oord has been contracted to reclaim and create 194 hectares of land in Addu City, Maldives. The works are part of the Addu Development Project, meant to address climate change and to transform Addu City into a fully functional, thriving economic hub and an attractive tourist destination. The client is the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure of the Government of Maldives.

Addu City is located in the Maldives and consists of the inhabited islands of the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, Addu Atoll. It is home to 20,000 people divided between six islands surrounding a lagoon. The Addu Development Project is the government’s plan to stimulate the economy and tackle high unemployment by increasing economic and employment opportunities in the region. The project is in line with the government’s aim of addressing climate change and environmental protection, promoting decentralisation and enhancing connectivity to relieve population congestion and reduce travel time and distance between jobs, services and homes.

Land will be reclaimed along the coasts of the islands Hithadhoo and Maradhoo/Maradhoo-Feydhoo. In addition, three new islands will be created in the city’s lagoon. Trailing suction hopper dredger HAM 318 will be deployed for the reclamation works and will source sand from two designated areas in the lagoon. Preparations will commence immediately. The project will be completed within 18 months.

Coastal protection is part of the contract. Van Oord will install 11 kilometres of shore protection using rock and at some locations geotextile tubes. The geotextile tubes are elongated bags made of specially developed geotextile fabric filled with sand. They have proven to be effective in a variety of other climate adaptation projects around the world involving the construction of dams. The method is sustainable because it reduces the use of primary building materials such as rock and sand and therefore also reduces the fossil fuel emissions caused by transport.

Addu Atoll has a wide variety of valuable ecosystems. Protection of the environment is a key concern for Van Oord and environmental management will be integrated into all project activities. Van Oord is currently investigating the most sustainable approach to project execution based on the best practices of other projects. Part of the project scope is the relocation of coral. Van Oord will work with local stakeholders to move coral and associated species from the reclamation area prior to project execution.

Van Oord has executed several projects in the Maldives. In 2017 it received the DPC Innovation Award for its innovative and sustainable approach to a land reclamation project near the capital Male. The project contributed to the region’s economic and social development.

Published on :
26 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

Jan De Nul’s Offshore Jack-Up Installation Vessel Vole au vent has kicked off her mission on the Saint-Nazaire Wind Farm project in France. In total, she will transport and install 80 units of 6 MW Wind Turbine Generators for the construction of the very first offshore wind farm in French waters. This wind farm will have a total capacity of 480 MW, which equals 20% of the Loire-Atlantique’s electricity consumption needs.

After 5 weeks of maintenance and project preparations in the port of Ostend in Belgium, the Vole au vent left for Saint-Nazaire, where she arrived on 31 March. From this marshalling harbour, the Vole au vent will load the 6 MW wind turbines and transport them offshore, for installation on top of the Banc de Guérande seabed formation in the northern part of the Bay of Biscay.

In sets of four, the turbines will be loaded on board of the Vole au vent and transported 12 km offshore, where the 1,500-tonnes main crane of the vessel will mount them on top of monopile foundations. The installation of one turbine takes approximately 24 hours, depending on the weather conditions, so each installation trip will take about 5 days. The very last turbine is scheduled to be mounted in Autumn 2022.

The Saint-Nazaire Offshore Wind Farm will produce 20% of the French Department Loire-Atlantique’s electricity consumption needs and will contribute to achieving the target of 40% renewable energy by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050 in France.

To this purpose, Seiche’s visual and thermal cameras have been installed on board the vessel Adhémar de Saint-Venant currently working in the Netherlands. A collaboration agreement to start this innovative pilot project with Seiche’s new second-generation HD thermal cameras was signed in May 2021. The first camera trials will be used to optimize the A.I software for future use on projects.

Based in the UK, Seiche Ltd specialises in the design, development and manufacture of underwater measurement and acoustic systems together with advanced visual detection systems. As part of an internal Innovation Challenge at Jan De Nul Group, four Jan De Nul employees proposed the idea to use this innovative technology during marine offshore operations, and initiated the pilot.

The multipurpose vessel Adhémar de Saint-Venant is currently at work on the project Hollandse Kust (noord) and (west Alpha) in the Netherlands. A team from Jan De Nul and Seiche travelled to Zeebrugge this week and installed the detection system on board. The combined visual and thermal cameras, secured to high points on the vessel for an increased visual reach, will be fully tested over the coming 2 months.

A two-month trial

This trial will allow Seiche Ltd to collect the necessary data for testing and fine-tuning the A.I. capacity of the automated detection function and the visual distances these cameras can cover.

Ultimately, this test will be a first step towards the fully automated detection of marine mammals, thereby setting a new standard for all dredging and offshore construction projects worldwide. The aim is to increase the level of protection of marine mammals and to reduce safety risks, costs and impact upon the environment.

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
19 Sep, 2022, 5:30 am

Van Oord has been awarded two new contracts to reinforce the coast at the Romanian seaside resorts of JupiterNe ptun and Balta Mangalia, Venus and Aurora. After a two year long European tender process, the Administratia Bazinala de Apa Dobrogea-Litoral has chosen Van Oord for the design and construction of new groynes and beaches, this time over a length of 6 kilometers of coastline. The projects are an addition to similar Projects in Eforie, which are proceeding as expected.

New groynes and beaches will protect the popular coastal areas against the waves of the Black Sea and at the same time boost the tourism sector. The projects consist not only of smart engineering; sustainability is also a major topic in the development. Several of the current breakwaters will be removed and redeveloped to make way for more nature-friendly alternatives, making the project tie in very well with Van Oord's vision on sustainability and climate adaptation.

As part of the work scope, the value of marine habitats will be increased through artificial reefs and bio-structures. The replantation of over 12 ha of varying species of sea grass and algae on the Black Sea bed will boost and enrich marine life. Similar initiatives have been successfully implemented in the previous projects in the area.

The construction of the groynes will start in 2023 after the design phase of about twelve months. A trailing suction hopper dredger will be deployed to restore the beaches. The project is expected to be completed in 2025.

Baggeraar Van Oord maakt weer winst: ’Bureaucratie vertraagt projecten met vele jaren’
Door GERT VAN HARSKAMP

in FINANCIEEL

Roelofs: „Vraag is altijd wie betaalt.
