The 2011 Subaru Forester lineup will start at $21,220 for a 2.5X model with a five-speed manual transmission and $1200 more for a four-speed automatic.

The prices represent a $230 increase from 2010 models, including the $725 destination charge. For 2011, the Forester has a new Boxer engine -- only the third generation since 1966.

There's also a new grille design and a different 17-inch alloy wheel design for the 2.5X Premium pictured on the red SUV above.

Non-turbocharged models still make 170 horsepower, but now with 174 lb-ft of torque at 4100 rpm versus the 2010 model's 170 lb-ft at 4400 rpm. Fuel economy has improved. 2011 Foresters without the turbo are rated 21/27 mpg city/highway. 2010 Foresters with a manual are rated 20/27 mpg and 20/26 mpg for the automatic.

Subaru's Forester 2.5X Premium sees a $430 price bump, to $23,920 for the manual and $1000 more for the automatic. For the extra money, the Premium model includes a 10-way power driver's seat, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, a panoramic moonroof, roof rails, a USB port, Bluetooth, and iPod connectivity.

The All Weather Package now includes a TomTom navigation system with a 4.3-inch LCD touchscreen. An integrated navigation system is still offered for $1800, on the Limited model. The system has a seven-inch LCD screen, auxiliary input jack and a backup camera.

Ik heb geen tijd om alle topics van TomTom te bekijken ( het zijn er een beetje veel) en misschien is dit wel "oud" nieuws, maar ik wilde hem jullie toch niet onthouden.

Garmin® and Suzuki Offer First Connected Navigation Device In North America on 2011 Grand Vitara and SX4 Models
Garmin Ltd.
Press Release Source: Garmin International Inc. On Tuesday November 2, 2010, 6:00 am EDT

OLATHE, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ:GRMN - News), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today that its automotive OEM division will provide a connected and integrated navigation package for the 2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara and SX4 models, including the SX4 Crossover, SX4 Sport and SX4 SportBack. The new navigator provides wireless online information like Google™ local search, traffic, weather, fuel prices, movie listings, flight status, local events, and white page telephone listings – the first of its kind to be offered in North America by any automaker.

“Suzuki can now offer its customers an up-to-the-minute navigational experience with an industry-leading points of interest (POI) database, as well as helpful information like traffic, weather, fuel prices, and more – all with a customized installation,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “The 2011 model year marks our third consecutive year that Garmin has been offered as navigation equipment in select Suzuki models, and they can boast of being the first auto manufacturer to feature a connected navigation device in North America.”

Based on Garmin’s popular nüvi® 1690, users can access the device’s built-in six million points of interest, or find a destination with virtually limitless Google local search and white page telephone listings. Detailed search results are displayed for many POIs, including a location description, business address, phone number and popularity rating. Motorists can also search for an individual’s street address by their first name, last name or phone number.

Additionally, users can look up local events and movie listings to find interesting activities wherever they might travel. Real-time flight status takes the stress out of traveling to the airport with up-to-the minute arrival and departure information for major air carriers. And the dynamic traffic and weather data helps drivers ensure they’re taking the safest, most efficient route.

The Suzuki navigation system also features ecoRoute™, an innovative application that helps customers stretch their dollars and conserve fuel by creating routes that are optimized for using less fuel. When a user selects the “less fuel” option, the nüvi will determine a fuel efficient route based on fuel consumption rates, estimated driving speeds and vehicle acceleration data.

The unit sits in a fully-integrated mount, which provides power to the unit as well as turn-by-turn voice prompting through the vehicle’s sound system. Drivers can easily detach the unit for safekeeping or pedestrian excursions. The unit is also customized with a Suzuki splash screen and a preloaded database of Suzuki dealerships.

The first year of wireless data services are free, and after that, the subscription renewal price for data services is $60.00 per year. Suzuki’s full line of model year 2011 vehicles is arriving in dealer showrooms now.

Groetjes,

Navigation Stocks – Challenges Not Lost on Hedge Funds

A major step forward for mankind in recent years is the impossibility of getting lost or being late. I exaggerate but with amazing mapping technology in our mobile phones and cars it has become very easy to get directions. Satellite navigation enables cars to drive themselves to your destination and has gone from being an army/geographer’s tool to the best friend of every taxi driver in the world. So how are investors positioned in the companies behind this breakthrough? We will look at short interest in TomTom (AMS:TOM2), Garmin (NASDAQ:GRMN), DTS (NASDAQ:DTSI) and Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM).

Dutch listed TomTom (TOM2) had a very bad 2008. The global financial crisis coincided with their EUR 2.9bn purchase of TeleAtlas and led to the need to issue new shares to pay off debt and support the viability of this sat nav business. Short sellers were not immune to these tribulations and this has been the most often shorted of all the Dutch stocks.

At present, the recent price rebound from 4 to 6 EUR has led to some short covering but short interest remains high at 10% of the shares in issue. In August this stood at almost 13%. Recent results were not good compared to this period last year and this was blamed on the weakened dollar since the US is a big customer. Other headwinds according to UBS analysts are the year on year decline in revenue for personal navigation devices (PND) as more and more people use the “free” functionality on their smart phones. Other analysts at JPMorgan Cazenove think the “in-dash” car navigation market will more than make up for falling PND income since they can dominate the onboard navigation for mid priced vehicles which lack this technology currently.

On the positive side, institutional investors who lend own nearly 8% of the company, which is close to a three year high. Tom Tom have a mapping application for Apple’s iPhone and are making good progress at including up to the minute traffic information using their TeleAtlas technology for new smartphone players like HTC– and Google still use TeleAtlas to power their European maps.

The market leader for sat nav devices is Garmin (GRMN). Long only funds who lend decreased their holdings in Garmin in July while short sellers also covered at the same time. Short interest in Garmin stands at 9% and with low volume, it would take 12 days to close out positions.

While on the subject of in-car devices it is interesting to see the partnership between Audi (owned by Volkswagen VW) and Qualcomm (QCOM) to be able to offer 3G high speed data connectivity for inbuilt internet features like Google Earth and other real time data services for car use. Drivers of their super luxury A8 car will use Qualcomm’s wizardry to offer their passengers wi-fi for their personal devices too! Short selling in QCOM is very low and falling while funds who lend own 26% of the shares in issue, which has hovered at around this level for the past two years.

DTS (DTSI) sells surround sound systems for an array of products including cars. It remains 10% shorted but was as high as 22% short two years ago. There has been lots of short covering but there remains plenty more to come and it would take 25 days to cover all of it due to low volume. www.dataexplorers.com/news-and-analys...

China Launches New Navigation Satellite Into Orbit

Four Beidou satellites have been sent into space so far this year.

China plans one more Beidou launch in December, when another satellite will be sent to cover high latitude and polar users.

The Beidou network will provide Chinese military and citizens an indigenous source of precise navigation information. The country currently relies on the U.S. Air Force's Global Positioning System.

Experimental Beidou satellites began launching in 2000, and Chinese officials hope the system can provide full navigation and timing coverage of China and neighboring countries by 2012.

China will eventually launch 35 satellites to expand the system to global coverage by 2020. Most of the operational Beidou satellites will circle 13,000 miles above Earth. Five spacecraft will eventually support the system from geosynchronous orbit.

The constellation is China's counterpart to the U.S. GPS system, Russia's Glonass navigation satellites and the Galileo network being developed by Europe.

China says Beidou services will be available at no charge to civilians with positioning accuracy of about 10 meters, or 33 feet. More precise navigation data will be given to Chinese government and military users.
