Recessie Europese economie dieper dan verwacht

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) De Europese economie zal dit jaar in een diepere recessie komen dan aanvankelijk verwacht. Dit bleek dinsdag uit de Summer 2020 Economic Forecast van de Europese Commissie.

“Omdat de lockdownmaatregelen minder snel worden opgeheven dan in de voorjaarsprognoses was gedacht, zal de impact op de economische activiteiten in 2020 ook groter zijn dan verwacht”, aldus de Commissie.

Maar de Commissie meent dat het ergste achter de rug is. “De verwachting is dat het herstel in de tweede helft van het jaar aan kracht wint, ook al zal het verloop ervan onvolledig zijn en niet in alle lidstaten gelijk”.

De economie van de eurozone zal in 2020 met 8,7 procent krimpen en met 6,1 procent groeien in 2021, zo voorziet Brussel. Eerder werd een krimp van 7,7 procent in 2020 verwacht.

Voor de hele EU verwacht de Europese Commissie een krimp van 8,3 procent in 2020 en een groei van 5,8 procent in 2021. Eerder werd een krimp van 7,4 procent in 2020 verwacht.

“De economische impact van de lockdown is zwaarder dan we eerst hadden verwacht”, aldus vicevoorzitter Valdis Dombrovskis van de Europese Commissie.

Hij roepte de Europese lidstaten om snel een akkoord te vinden over het Europese herstelfonds, dat tijdens een top op 17 en 18 juli onderhandeld zal worden.

“Vooruitblikkend mogen we verwachten dat de economie opnieuw opveert, maar we moeten waakzaam blijven voor een herstel dat in een ongelijk tempo verloopt”, voegde Dombrovskis toe.
