4 New Nickel Smelters to start in Indonesia in 2020

Indonesian government expects four smelters with a combined annual input capacity of 2.07 million tonnes and output capacity of 200,923 tonnes to begin operations this year. Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry director Mr Yunus Saefulhak told reporters that the smelters would produce ferronickel, nickel pig iron, lead bullion and ferromanganese. Their annual production outputs are 64,655 tonnes, 72,965 tonnes, 22,924 tonnes and 40,379 tonnes, respectively. The government guards these projects. The point is to get them done.”

The four projects add to a list of 29 smelters expected to be operational by 2022, which is when Indonesia will ban all mineral ore exports and, thus, needs a sizeable downstream mining industry to absorb excess domestic supply. The country is particularly expediting nickel smelter development because it is the only metal whose export ban starts this year.

Self-Accelerated Corrosion of Nuclear Waste Forms at Material Interfaces

A new study by researchers at Ohio State University suggests that stainless steel may not be the best choice for containing high-level nuclear waste. By simulating long-term storage conditions, the team found that the storage materials interact with each other more than previously thought, causing them to degrade faster. In a research paper published in NatureMaterial, they said “The US plan for high-level nuclear waste includes the immobilization of long-lived radionuclides in glass or ceramic waste forms in stainless-steel canisters for disposal in deep geological repositories. Here we report that, under simulated repository conditions, corrosion could be significantly accelerated at the interfaces of different barrier materials, which has not been considered in the current safety and performance assessment models. Severe localized corrosion was found at the interfaces between stainless steel and a model nuclear waste glass and between stainless steel and a ceramic waste form. The accelerated corrosion can be attributed to changes of solution chemistry and local acidity/alkalinity within a confined space, which significantly alter the corrosion of both the waste-form materials and the metallic canisters. The corrosion that is accelerated by the interface interaction between dissimilar materials could profoundly impact the service life of the nuclear waste packages, which, therefore, should be carefully considered when evaluating the performance of waste forms and their packages. Moreover, compatible barriers should be selected to further optimize the performance of the geological repository system.

The storage of nuclear waste is more than a perennial political football, it is an existential problem. Whatever one's opinions about nuclear power or weapons, there are thousands of tons of nuclear waste temporarily stored around the world, meaning that a way must be found to store it all safely in the long term. The most important type of nuclear waste is the high-level waste left over from reprocessing nuclear fuel or from nuclear weapon production. Such waste is made up of a complex mixture of radioactive isotopes with half-lives ranging from years to millennia. Though reactors have been operating all over the world for over 75 years, only Finland has started to build a permanent storage facility for such very dangerous waste.

SpaceX to Change Stainless Steel Grade for Starship Rockets

SpaceX CEO Mr Elon Musk has announced that the company will be making some changes to its Starship rocket prototypes, including tweaking the material used in their construction. He said “We should be able to do better in the 2020s than they did in, like, the ’50s, you know? So, I think we’ll start switching away from 301 maybe in the next month or two.”

Mr Musk did not specify exactly what type of alloy the company will be using in future, though it seems likely that it will be a slightly different version of stainless steel.

The first prototypes of the Starship were constructed from a stainless steel alloy called 301.

Mr Musk has big plans for the Starship. The aim is to create a rocket capable of eventually carrying humans to Mars, with up to 100 passengers on board each flight. And earlier this week, Musk announced he intends for the new SpaceX factory in Boca Chica in Texas to produce one Starship rocket every 72 hours. That fast rate of Starship production will be required if Musk is to achieve his lofty goals of carrying hundreds or even thousands of people to Mars. The aim is for the Starship to be reusable in a fast, efficient manner, with each individual Starship capable of being launched up to three times per day.

US DOC Starts Circumvention Probe on Stainless Steel Imports from Vietnam

The US Department of Commerce has sef initiated a circumvention inquiry to determine if imports of stainless steel sheet and strip from Vietnam are circumventing existing US antidumping and countervailing duties on these products from China. The possible circumvention involves stainless steel flat-rolled products from China that are completed in Vietnam and then exported to the US. If Commerce preliminarily determines that circumvention is occurring, it will instruct US Customs and Border Protection to suspend liquidation and begin collecting cash deposits on imports of stainless sheet and strip completed in Vietnam using Chinese-origin stainless steel flat-rolled inputs and or Chinese-origin stainless sheet and strip further processed in Vietnam

US DOC is also self-initiating a concurrent scope inquiry to determine if stainless sheet and strip from Vietnam is within the scope of the AD & CVD orders on stainless sheet and strip from China

US DOC said “Shipments of stainless sheet and strip from Vietnam to the US increased in value by USD 122 million, or 180.4%, comparing import data from the 40-month periods before and after the initiations of the original AD/CVD investigations on Chinese stainless sheet and strip on March 3, 2016.”

Commerce set final AD duties ranging from 63.86%-76.64% and subsidy rates of 75.6%-190.71% on Chinese stainless steel sheet and strip in March 2017.

Stainless Steel Order Volumes Remain Low, amid Ongoing Pandemic
On May 29, 2020
by MEPS International Ltd
in Steel Price News

In the United States, buyers of stainless steel are purchasing minimal quantities, at present. Companies are reluctant to commit to new forward orders because of the uncertain economic environment caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Service centres are keen to reduce inventories, especially of high-priced material. Many are simply looking to generate cash, as financial conditions deteriorate.

Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, US stainless steel producers indicated that basis price rises would be imminent. However, the unprecedent market conditions arising from the pandemic make reductions in discount levels unlikely, in the near term. US steelmakers are content to maintain stable pricing, at present. Any movement in basis values is unlikely to spur a significant increase in new forward orders.

Output cuts and low depot stock levels should help the mills to maintain stability in basis prices over the coming months. However, any sudden surge in demand, during this period, could lead to shortages in several product lines...

ATI to auction Stainless Steel Vintage Cars

Tribune Live reported that stainless steel may be resistant to rust and the ravages of time, but the tangible history of Allegheny Ludlum may not be as resilient as company’s legacy and a source of community pride will fade with the loss of four cars that have stainless steel bodies. They were produced by Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp., in partnership with Ford. Allegheny Ludlum has since morphed into today’s Allegheny Technologies Inc. The cars a 1936 Ford sedan, a 1960 Ford Thunderbird and a 1967 Lincoln Continental convertible were taken from a garage at the ATI’s Hot Rolling and Processing Facility in Harrison and shipped to Indiana in April, where they are slated to be auctioned as a single lot over Labor Day weekend in September.

ATI spokeswoman Natalie Gillespie said the company is selling the cars as it faces extraordinary economic challenges amid the covid-19 pandemic. She said “This is not a decision we made lightly. Our goal is to protect our business for the benefit of the entire team, taking necessary actions so we can emerge stronger and ready to serve our customers as the markets return.”

The four cars that were kept at the mill were among 11 stainless steel cars produced by Allegheny Ludlum and Ford. Of the 11, six were 1936 Ford sedans, two were 1960 Thunderbirds and three were 1967 Lincoln Continental convertibles. The original six were built to show off the properties and uses of stainless steel, then a new metal. After being built in Detroit, Allegheny Ludlum representatives, usually salesmen, drove the cars for business. ATI donated a 1936 Ford, one of four known to still exist, to the Heinz History Center in 1999. The car is displayed on its first floor Great Hall.

In navolging van voda post over de autoindustrie, is hier een link met leesvoer.

www.meps.co.uk/gb/en/news/automotive-...

Strekking vh verhaal is:

Alles is mogelijk.

South Korea Extends Anti-Dumping Tariff on Stainless Steel Plate Imports from Japan

The Finance Ministry has announced that South Korea is going to extend its anti-dumping duty on stainless steel plates from Japan for another three years. The tariff of 13.1-7 percent was first imposed for five years in April 2011, and then extended for another three years until last December.

South Korea originally imposed the tariff because it found the Japanese product was sold here at artificially low prices, disrupting the local market.

The tariff mainly targets those from Japan's Nippon Steel Stainless Steel, Nippon Yakin Kogyo and JFE Steel. The local market of such plates is estimated at 300 billion won.

Workforce Shortage hits Stainless Steel Utensil Industry in Bhayandar

Free Press Journal reported that with scores of migrant workers returning to their hometowns amid the nationwide lockdown that was imposed to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, a massive shortage of manpower has gripped the industrial areas Mira Bhayandar near Mumbai, which reopened after a gap of almost three months. The worst affected are the hundreds of steel utensil manufacturing units. A small-scale unit owner said “Still fearing infection due to the alarming rise in the number of cases in the city, most of them are reluctant to return. Instead, they prefer to stay in their villages and engage themselves in farming or other odd-jobs to earn a living till normalcy returns. Left with no other option, we have started our factory with a skeletal workforce.”

Some migrants fear that the lockdown will be imposed again and they will once again be stranded with no means to earn their livelihood.

The steel industry has provided employment opportunities to around 50,000 skilled and unskilled workers, mostly migrants hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. However, as per rough estimates provided by local trade unions, nearly 60% to 70% of the labour force employed in the twin-city has now left for their hometowns, creating a huge void for almost all manufacturing and buffing units.

Bhayandar industry mainly comprises more than 2,000 buffing units which caters to the polishing needs of the steel utensil manufacturers and export houses in the region. The workforce operates on a per piece-rate system, the remunerations of which are based on the number of units processed on a daily basis.

SAIL SSP Develops Highly Corrosion Resistant Super Duplex Stainless Steel

Steel Authority of India Limited has developed the capability to produce Super Duplex Stainless Steel in SS 32205 grade at its Salem Steel Plant. Currently, SAIL is among the few Indian steelmakers which has developed this grade of steel. This grade of stainless steel is mainly imported so far. The Super Duplex Stainless Steel has superior corrosion resistance with higher strength and formability. Due to these characteristics, it can be effectively used in various applications in corrosion prone areas, mainly in chemical processing equipment, oil & gas exploration, pulp & paper industries, food processing equipment and biofuel plants. All these applications require high corrosion resistance steel with strength, which can be met by Super Duplex Stainless Steel of SS 32205 grade having 3% molybdenum.

Earlier, SAIL SSP developed Duplex Stainless Steel of SS 32202 grade having 0.4% molybdenum content and has already serviced the orders for it. With the new capability to produce Super Duplex Stainless Steel of SS 32205 grade, SAIL has enriched its product basket further and will be able to cater to high-end steel requirement in the country.

The superior qualities of corrosion resistance, strength and formability in this new grade come through the presence of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen in the steel. This stainless steel also has higher yield strength almost twice that of standard austenitic steel providing flexibility to use the steel in thinner gauges for same strength.
