Two Tier Market Emerges in Ship Recycling Sector

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
3 Nov, 2022, 5:02 am

World's leading cash buyer of ships for recycling GMS said that “Activity and action remain sparse across all recycling destinations, with very few market sales to speak of, including minimal firm interest or serious numbers from End Buyers that may tempt Owners & Cash Buyers to engage in any meaningful negotiations. Fundamentals, which remain the primary driving factors of the ongoing volatility, remain precariously poised across all locations, with steel prices volatile & down and currencies still struggling to find stable footing. As a result, a sort of two tier market has emerged, one where Cash Buyers, Brokers and Owners expect the market to be at a certain level, and another where Local Recyclers seem to be intentionally positioning prices well below asking levels, and both are about USD 50/LDT apart at this time.”

GMS said “Only on select and favored tonnage, like Russian built tankers or smaller LDT specialized units in decent condition are welcomed with acceptable numbers from the markets, particularly from a picky Bangladesh. Standard Handy, Panamax Bulk Carriers, and Capes are seeing prices in the mid USD 550s/LDT., if at all, as the number of End Buyers with the ability to establish workable L/Cs across the sub-continent continues to dwindle.”

GMS added “Diwali holidays in India have afforded the market there a break, but the persistent inertia evident in Pakistan and Bangladesh has become a prolonged malaise and does not giving Cash Buyers any confidence to offer on any of the small number of candidates available for recycling, instead prefer the far more bullish trading sector as a viable alternative.”

GMS Price Assessment - India/Bangladesh/Pakistan – Week 39 Unchanged

Dry Bulk – USD 550-570 per LDT

Tankers - USD 560-580 per LDT

Containers - USD 570-590 per LDT

Acerinox Recognizes Best Ever January-September Results

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
3 Nov, 2022, 5:05 am

Spain headquartered leading stainless steelmaker Acerinox has recognized profits after tax and non-controlling interests amounting to EUR 741 million in the first nine months of the year. Acerinox recognized revenue of EUR 6,996 million, giving rise to a 47% increase compared to the first nine months of 2021. Moreover, EBITDA, which totaled EUR 1,186 million, was 77% higher than that of the same period in 2021, and the EBITDA margin on sales increased to 17%. Melting shop production, 1.792 million tonnes, decreased by 10% compared to the same

Acerinox said “Our main market, the United States, maintain a better tone than the rest of the markets. This is expected to continue in the coming months. The high levels of imports and inventories reached in the summer have led us to reduce production and sales in order to optimize margins. The outlook in main market, the United States, is positive, while in Europe uncertainty prevails, due to the war and high energy prices. The fourth quarter will be affected by the inventory reduction in the market and the aforementioned circumstances, and we expect EBITDA to be lower than in the third quarter. Even so, the 2022 results will be the best in our history, thus demonstrating our capacity to take advantage of the good moments in the cycle and the level of competitiveness achieved. In the fourth quarter we expect a reduction in working capital, which would have a positive effect on cash generation and debt reduction.”

Vallourec Supplies Pipes for Hydrogen Refueling System for Trains

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
3 Nov, 2022, 5:07 am

Leading company in global industrial gases and engineering Linde has officially launched the world's first hydrogen refueling system for passenger trains in Germany’s Lower Saxony state. In this context, Vallourec supplied high-pressure pipes to Van Halteren Technologies in Boxtel for the manufacturing of piston accumulators intended for the Bremerhaven refueling station of the Buxtehude-Cuxhaven train line.

Back in August 2022, Linde inaugurated the world's first hydrogen refueling system for passenger trains in Germany’s Lower Saxony state. The system will supply 14 Coradia iLint hydrogen-powered passenger trains in the town of Bremervörde, Rotenburg district. With a single refueling, the trains will be able to run 1,000 kilometers and are expected to gradually replace the existing diesel-powered fleet. With a total daily capacity of around 1,600 kilograms, the hydrogen refueling system was built with the ability to integrate future on-site green hydrogen generation.

Van Halteren Technologies in Boxtel, a specialist in hydraulic systems and mechanical engineering, approached Vallourec for the supply of high-pressure pipes for the manufacturing of 64 piston accumulators intended for the Bremerhaven refueling station of the Buxtehude-Cuxhaven train line. The piston accumulators will contain up to 1,800kg of hydrogen at a constant pressure storage of 500 bar. This is an alternative design to refueling by pressure drop which is the most common system using cascades of hydrogen cylinders. By comparison, piston accumulators require an additional hydraulic circuit, but allow full use of the storage volume and minimize the number of tanks needed.

For Van Halteren Technologies’ request, Vallourec provided 64 pipes in 460mm outer diameter and 40mm wall thickness. Thanks to its mills across the globe, Vallourec has the ability to provide customers with large dimension pipes up to 710mm and thick walls up to 110mm, providing designed thickness to withstand high pressure, even after machining and finishing. Wide capability range allows for tailor-made and optimized solutions, helping customers to optimize the dimensions in an effort to maximize the storage system’s overall cost efficiency.

Vallourec’s pipes delivered to Van Halteren Technologies were manufactured in grade 34CrMo4+QT, a grade qualified by Vallourec for hydrogen high-pressure storage. Vallourec also provided quality heat-treatment (quenching and tempering) as well as a customized surface finishing specially adapted for its application, i.e. the piston accumulator was produced with the required extra smooth surface finish including tight shape and position tolerances to ensure high hydrogen pressure tightness and precise piston movement.

Published on :
3 Nov, 2022, 5:11 am

Europe’s leading logistics firm DB Cargo and ArcelorMittal Germany have developed a new unloading system that minimizes dust formation to reduce the footprint of this supply chain is right at the start. The unloading system was developed by the Austrian manufacturer Innofreight. This is partially automated, and protects the environment against fine dust and emissions. The materials used in steel production, such as ore, coke and limestone, can be handled with almost no dust formation. In the future, green sponge iron, a precursor for climate-neutral steel production, will also be transported this way

At the same time, lighter wagons and special containers increase the efficiency of the freight trains that transport the steel. The new equipment optimizes the loading volume and increases the payload per train by up to 20%. Fewer freight trains have to run for the same transport volume. More than 90% of the required raw materials can be delivered in such a climate-friendly way

ArcelorMittal is planning further investments in Eisenhüttenstadt: two electric arc furnaces are to be built that will produce crude steel based on recycling scrap and sponge iron made with green hydrogen. The sponge iron is initially to be transported by rail from a plant planned at ArcelorMittal in Bremen to the unloading facilities in Eisenhüttenstadt.

Dillinger Plates used for Europe’s Largest Ship Elevator

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
3 Nov, 2022, 5:21 am

The new ship lift that recently opened in Niederfinow is built with steel from Dillinger. Located at the eastern end of the Oder-Havel Canal in Niederfinow in Brandenburg in Germany, it hoists ships in a suspended steel trough over a 36-meter difference in elevation from the Oder into the Havel Canal and vice versa. . Dillinger supplied around 5,500 tonnes of heavy plate in thicknesses ranging from 10 to 80 mm for the trough, the cable pulley supports and the canal bridge of this spectacular structure.

The new structure was built because the old lift from 1934 had become too small for modern coaster vessels and container ships. The new system, 55 meters high, 46 meters wide and 133 meters long, dwarfs the roughly 90-year-old hoist that stands next to it. The high proportion of glass and the yellow and blue steel beams give it a much more modern appearance and it is also equipped with the latest digital technology: While lock operation in the old lift is done manually and with the push of a button, in the new construction, the lock is operated using digital technology. With its remarkable dimensions, the new lift now also allows passage of larger container ships as well as river cruise ships of up to 110 meters in length.

The overall structure is divided into the hoist with trough, the upper and lowers outer harbors, and a canal bridge approximately 65 meters long. The trough itself weighs over 2,000 tonnes and includes a usable length of 115 meters, a width of 12.5 meters, a lifting height of 38 meters and a water depth of 4 meters

Heavy plate from Dillinger has proven its value all over the world. The steel expert with centuries of experience has supplied its plates for countless major steel structures, including the gigantic Boston Flood Barrier in the UK and the spectacular Neckar Bridge. Dillinger is also a specialist in the production of heavy plate for steel pipes used in offshore wind turbines. As a major player in the energy transition, Dillinger supplies a large number of wind farms in Europe and worldwide.

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
3 Nov, 2022, 5:30 am

The European Steel Association EUROFER in latest Economic Report for Q4 of 2022 said “Despite the heavy disruptions and the weakened demand outlook caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, steel using sectors output recorded the sixth consecutive year-on-year growth over the second quarter of 2022 5.71%, gaining further speed compared to the first quarter 6.91%. This is a continuation of the carry-over effect of the positive trend seen since the third quarter of 2020 when industry began to rebound very strongly after pandemic-led slumps.”

EUROFER said “By contrast, in the second half of 2022 total production activity in steel-using sectors is expected to be considerably impacted by the conflict in Ukraine as well as rising energy prices, that took their toll in terms of production costs and lower output Total output in steel-using sectors is projected to achieve growth 1.91% in 2022 mainly thanks to very positive developments over the first two quarters. This evolution is a combination of favorable trends in the construction, mechanical engineering and transport sectors, plus automotive which returned to positive territory over the second quarter of 2022 after three consecutive quarterly drops, caused by supply chain disruptions.”

EUROFER added “The ongoing energy crisis and the overall rapid deterioration of the economic and industrial outlook are set to take their toll on growth over the next quarters, as recession in Steel Weighted Industrial Production is expected between the fourth quarter of 2022 and the second quarter of 2023. The winter months are predicted to be particularly tough for both industry and the economy in general, with a recession in sight. The rapid deterioration of the global situation due to worsened, persisting downside factors over the summer (war in Ukraine, rising energy prices) have led to a complete revision of output forecast for 2023, when SWIP is expected to fall by 0.9%, albeit with different trends among individual EU economies. This would be the second SWIP recession since 2013, after the one due to the pandemic in 2020, while output was flat in 2019. Based on the current scenario, the economic and industrial outlook is expected to improve only from the second quarter of 2023 onwards.
