The Indian government is reportedly planning to introduce cryptocurrency regulation by the time of the next general Budget, which is in February next year. Instead of banning cryptocurrencies, like bitcoin, the government is likely to regulate crypto assets as commodities, according to reports.

Indian Crypto Law Could Comes as Early as February
The Indian government is planning to introduce cryptocurrency regulation in February next year, local news outlet Business Today reported, elaborating:

Finance Ministry officials have told Business Today Television that a law for cryptocurrencies would most likely come around by the time of the next general Budget.

The Budget 2022-23 is expected to be presented on Feb. 1 during the first half of the parliament’s Budget session, which usually begins in the last week of January.

Furthermore, the government is likely to regulate cryptocurrencies as an asset class, similar to how commodities are regulated, with appropriate taxation on transactions and gains, the news outlet conveyed. In June, the government reportedly said that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) will oversee regulations for the cryptocurrency sector after crypto is classified as an asset class.

Another official told the publication that officials from the Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) are fine-tuning the regulatory framework for crypto. However, the central bank recently said it still has “serious concerns” about cryptocurrency.

India does not currently regulate the crypto sector directly. The government has been considering a bill titled “Banning of Cryptocurrency & Regulation of Official Digital Currency” that seeks to ban all cryptocurrencies, like bitcoin, except state-issued ones. The bill was drafted by an inter-ministerial committee headed by former Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg. It was published in July 2019.

However, recent reports suggest that the government may have moved away from the idea of banning cryptocurrencies. In July, the finance minister said that the crypto bill was ready for Cabinet. The chairman of India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance explained in September that cryptocurrency legislation in India will be “distinct and unique.”

The CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Wazirx, Nischal Shetty, commented on the upcoming Indian crypto regulation:

"Great to hear that India plans to bring in crypto regulation bill next year. Crypto has reached a stage where countries no longer talk about a ban. It’s now about ‘How to regulate.’"

Cryptominers verhuizen van China naar VS
28-10-2021 15:04 - Cambridge ziet Amerika aan populariteit winnen.

(ABM-Crypto) Veel cryptominers die eerst in China actief waren, kiezen nu voor de Verenigde Staten. Dit blijkt uit data van de Universiteit van Cambridge.

China wordt steeds strenger voor cryptominers en dat is reden voor veel van deze bedrijven om het land te verlaten. Volgens gegevens van Cambridge kiest meer dan een derde van deze bedrijven voor de Verenigde Staten als nieuwe vestigingsplaats.

Dan doen zij omdat ze denken dat de beschikbaarheid van energie hier betrouwbaarder is en ook de nieuwe regelgeving beter voorspelbaar zal zijn.

El Salvador koopt bitcoins bij

(ABM-Crypto) El Salvador heeft opnieuw 420 bitcoins gekocht. Dit bleek uit een tweet van de president van het land.

Nayib Bukele zei dat deze bitcoins werden gekocht toen de prijs even onder de 59.000 dollar schoot.

"Het was lang wachten, maar het was het waard. We hebben zojuist op de dip gekocht", schreef Bukele.

Even later tweette de president dat El Salvador al winst maakt op de juist aangeschafte bitcoins.

Donderdagmiddag noteerde de bitcoin op 61.572 dollar.

Federal Reserve, FDIC, OCC Discuss Allowing Banks to Hold Crypto on Balance Sheets

A group of U.S. banking regulators is working on how banks can be allowed to offer crypto services and hold cryptocurrencies on their balance sheets. The chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) said, “If we don’t bring this activity inside the banks, it is going to develop outside of the banks … The federal regulators won’t be able to regulate it.”

US Regulators to Set Clear Rules for Banks to Deal With Crypto
Jelena McWilliams, the chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), told Reuters in an interview at a fintech conference Monday that a team of U.S. bank regulators is working on providing a roadmap for banks to engage with crypto assets.

The team comprises the FDIC, the Federal Reserve, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Federal Reserve Vice Chair of Supervision Randal Quarles revealed the collaboration between the three U.S. regulators in May.

McWilliams said on a conference panel:

My goal in this interagency group is to basically provide a path for banks to be able to act as a custodian of these assets, use crypto assets, digital assets as some form of collateral … At some point in time, we’re going to tackle how and under what circumstances banks can hold them on their balance sheet.

While establishing clear rules for banks to provide custody services is easy, the FDIC boss explained that it is difficult to figure out how to allow a volatile asset to be used as collateral and include it on bank balance sheets.

She was quoted as saying: “Valuation of these assets and the fluctuation in their value that can be almost on a daily basis … You have to decide what kind of capital and liquidity treatment to allocate to such balance sheet holdings.”

The OCC, under the leadership of Brian Brooks, clarified in June 2020 that national banks and federal savings associations can provide cryptocurrency custody services for customers. However, Brooks has resigned and the new Acting Comptroller of the Currency, Michael Hsu, has requested a review of the cryptocurrency standards established by the OCC prior to him taking office.

“I think that we need to allow banks in this space, while appropriately managing and mitigating risk,” McWilliams opined, elaborating:

"If we don’t bring this activity inside the banks, it is going to develop outside of the banks … The federal regulators won’t be able to regulate it."

MicroStrategy kocht nog eens 9.000 bitcoins
29-10-2021 16:37 - Overweegt nieuwe kapitaalronde.

(ABM-Crypto) MicroStrategy heeft in het derde kwartaal bijna 9.000 bitcoins bijgekocht. Dit meldde het bedrijf bij zijn kwartaalcijfers.

Die werden gekocht met het geld dat MicroStrategy onlangs ophaalde met de verkoop van aandelen.

Inmiddels bezit MicroStrategy 114.000 bitcoins.

CEO Michael Saylor zei de mogelijkheden te bekijken om extra kapitaal aan te trekken en meer bitcoins te kopen. Aan het einde van september had de onderneming nog 57 miljoen dollar in kas.

Op de beurs is MicroStrategy circa 7 miljard dollar waard.

Enorme stijging cryptomunt Squid Game

(ABM-Crypto) Afgelopen week werd de Squid-token gelanceerd, een cryptomunt naar aanleiding van de succesvolle Netflix-serie Squid Game.

De munt kon bij lancering worden gekocht voor 0,012 dollar, maar kost zondagmiddag al 33,71 dollar.

Squid Game is een Zuid-Koreaanse serie die medio september dit jaar door Netflix werd uitgebracht. Honderden berooide mensen accepteren een vreemde uitnodiging om deel te nemen aan een reeks kinderspellen. De prijs is verleidelijk hoog, maar op gevaar van eigen leven. De serie kent 9 afleveringen en zijn ongekend populair.

De tokens kunnen gebruikt worden voor het Squid Game project, een crypto play-to-earn platform. Het toernooi begint in november en kent zes rondes. Volgens de makers hoeven deelnemers niet te vrezen voor hun leven.

Het FD is helaas geen betrouwbare krant wat betreft crypto informatie. Ze begrijpen het niet en ze willen het ook niet begrijpen. Het is een blad voor degene die zich wensen te beperken tot hele traditionele beleggingen.

Nadat bitcoin in augustus de 47.000 dollar haalde en in september daalde naar 43.000 dollar, zoals PlanB ook had verwacht, kwam bitcoin in oktober op 61.000 dollar met een nieuwe recordprijs aan het einde van de maand. Dat was volgens PlanB "wel met een afrondingsfoutje van 3 procent, maar dat is goed genoeg voor mij".

De volgende doelen van PlanB zijn 98.000 dollar in november en zelfs 135.000 dollar in december.

Maandagmiddag kostte een bitcoin 62.008 dollar, aldus data van Coinmarketcap.

Crypto Weekly: The elephant in the room

In just a year, a cryptocurrency launched as a joke, has advanced to be the ninth largest cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of close to $40bn, followed by another joke cryptocurrency being the 10th largest cryptocurrency, underlining the speculative fever in the crypto market.
SHIBA INU FROM $0 TO $50BN IN A YEAR

Let us start by talking about the elephant, or dog if you will, in the room. The Ethereum-based token Shiba Inu has surged over the last year to exceed a market capitalization last week of more than $50bn. Its market capitalization has since declined to around $40bn, while it is currently being the ninth largest cryptocurrency. Shiba Inu was anonymously launched in August 2020, releasing a whitepaper, or as Shiba Inu calls it: “woof paper” due to the cryptocurrency being inspired by a dog. At launch, 50% of the supply was locked to be traded in the decentralized exchange Uniswap, whereas the other half was sent to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. The latter later burned 90% of his Shiba Inu tokens, while donating the remaining 10% to the India Covid Relief Fund. Not surprisingly, Shiba Inu was fundamentally launched as a joke, heavily inspired by Dogecoin, another cryptocurrency launched as a joke back in 2013. Shiba Inu supporters call the cryptocurrency a “dogecoin killer”. Using a 2021 term, both can respectfully be called meme coins like meme stocks such as GameStop.

Along with Dogecoin, which has a present market capitalization of $36bn, the two cryptocurrencies are not benefitting the crypto market as a whole. The crypto market is broadly known as a wild west compared to the traditional financial industry, lacking a regulatory framework and arguably some normality. For the market to achieve mainstream adoption and not remain a niche to a select few, it needs to discard the wild west perception. In such circumstances, having the ninth and 10th largest cryptocurrencies with a combined market capitalization of approximately $75bn being obvious jokes, is not making it easier to shred the wild west perception. On the contrary, it keeps the masses away, both in terms of users, developers, and traditional market participants, as fewer participants want to be deeply involved in a market widely perceived as frivolous. To some degree, this shows the current challenges of the crypto market obstructing it to go fully mainstream.

CRYPTO COMPANIES ARE RAISING MONEY AT A FAST PACE

Venture funds and other investors currently have a strong sentiment on companies within the cryptocurrency industry. Today, Digital Currency Group, the owner of several crypto-related companies such as Grayscale Investments, the world’s largest digital asset manager, raised $700mn from SoftBank and Google’s venture capital arm. In late October, the cryptocurrency exchange FTX raised an additional $420mn by BlackRock among 68 other investors on top of its massive $900mn funding round in July. This follows a third quarter, which was a record quarter in terms of venture funding being invested in cryptocurrency- and blockchain companies. In the third quarter, companies raised a total of $8.2bn across 302 rounds compared to the former record quarter of $4.38bn raised in Q2 this year.
