Dr. Reddy's inks licensing deal with Gilead for remdesivir

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (NYSE:RDY) has entered into a non-exclusive Licensing Agreement with Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) that will grant the company the right to register, manufacture and sell Gilead’s investigational drug, Remdesivir, a potential treatment for COVID-19, in 127 countries including India.

Dr. Reddy’s will receive technology transfer from Gilead for manufacturing of this drug and would need to scale up production and obtain regulatory approval for marketing in respective countries.

FDA warns on use of malaria drugs with remdesivir

The FDA has issued a warning to healthcare providers that it does not recommend co-administering malaria meds chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine with Gilead Sciences' (NASDAQ:GILD) remdesivir for COVID-19 patients since they may compromise the antiviral effect of the latter.

The agency says it is not aware of any instances in the field of this reduced activity but is continuing to "evaluate all data" related to remdesivir.

Earlier today, the FDA rescinded emergency use authorization of the malaria drugs for COVID-19.

Remdesivir OK'd in India at $39-52 per dose

India's Controller General has approved generic versions of Gilead Sciences' (NASDAQ:GILD) remdesivir for the treatment of COVID-19.

Two domestic drugmakers, Hyderabad-based Hetero and Mumbai-based Cipla, plan to launch their offerings within a week at Rs 5,000-6,000 ($65-78) and Rs 3,000-4,000 ($39-52), respectively.

According to current Indian government guidelines, a COVID-19 patient may need five-to-six doses, implying a total treatment cost of the antiviral as low as $195.

Gilead has yet to announce the price in the U.S. but it's safe to say it will be substantially higher. Drug cost watchdog ICER issued a report last month that the medicine would be cost-effective at $4,500 per course of treatment.

Gilead to launch study of inhaled formulation of remdesivir

In an open letter, Gilead Sciences (GILD -2.5%) Chairman & CEO Daniel O'Day says the company will launch a Phase 1 clinical trial this week evaluating an inhalable version of remdesivir in healthy volunteers. The formulation, administered via nebulizer, could potentially allow use outside of the hospital for the treatment of earlier stages of COVID-19.

The formulation that the FDA approved for emergency use for severely ill COVID-19 patients is administered intravenously.

Trials are in process testing the IV version in outpatient settings like infusion centers and nursing homes.

The company is also exploring the potential of remdesivir combo therapies such as JAK inhibitor baricitinib [Eli Lilly's (LLY -0.2%) Olumiant] and IL-6 inhibitor tocilizumab [Roche's (OTCQX:RHHBY -0.3%) Actemra]. The corticosteroid dexamethasone is another prospect considering the positive data released last week.

The next wave of studies will include vulnerable patient populations, including children, pregnant women and those with end-stage renal disease.

On the supply front, the company expects to produce more than 2M treatment courses by year-end and "many millions" more next year.

Gilead nabs stake in cancer therapy developer Pionyr Immunotherapeutics

Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) has acquired a 49.9% interest in privately held South San Francisco, CA-based Pionyr Immunotherapeutics, a developer of biologics to treat cancer based on its Myeloid Tuning technology that, it says, alters the tumor microenvironment to favor immune-activating cells over immune-suppressing cells.

Under the terms of the agreement, GILD will pay $275M at closing. It will have an exclusive option to acquire the remaining 50.1% of Pionyr in exchange for a $315M option exercise fee and up to $1.5B in milestones. It will provide additional funding for its PY314 and PY159 programs as well as ongoing R&D efforts.

Pionyr expects to file INDs in the U.S. for the two programs next quarter.

Shares up a fraction premarket.

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Gilead Sciences heeft de prijs van zijn virusremmer remdesivir vastgesteld op 390 dollar per flacon. Dit meldde CEO Daniel O’Day maandag.

De topman meldde in een open brief de prijs voor het coronamedicijn normaliter vast te stellen op basis van de waarde die het biedt, maar te hebben besloten de virusremmer ver onder deze waarde te prijzen om een "brede en rechtvaardige toegang te verzekeren in een tijd van een dringende wereldwijde behoefte", aldus O'Day.

Gilead verwacht op basis van de huidige behandelingspatronen dat de overgrote meerderheid van de patiënten een behandelingskuur van 5 dagen nodig heeft, dus 6 injectieflacons, wat neerkomt op 2.340 dollar per behandeling per patiënt.

De prijs voor particuliere Amerikaanse verzekeringsmaatschappijen is vastgesteld op 520 dollar per injectieflacon.

Vorige week is de virusremmer van Gilead ook door het Europees Geneesmiddelenbureau (EMA) aanbevolen als behandeling tegen Covid-19 bij patiënten met een longontsteking die extra zuurstof toegediend krijgen.

Eerder werd remdesivir al in de Verenigde Staten goedgekeurd als noodbehandeling tegen het coronavirus.
