Crow is right. Numerous House Rs have received death threats in the past week, and I know for a fact several members *want* to impeach but fear casting that vote could get them or their families murdered.

Not spinning or covering for anyone. Just stating the chilling reality.

This is why, as I’ve written/said before, Republicans should have asserted themselves and held Trump accountable from Day One. Their silence in the face of his manifest abuses contributed to the formation of a cult that now threatens their lives. Never should have come to this.

And yes: Trump’s rhetoric the last 5 years has stirred constant threats of violence against immigrants, journalists, Democratic lawmakers and others. Republicans are not the only ones being terrorized here. All the more reason for Americans to band together and say never again.

1 Congress lid vertelde al dat een senator de dag voor de bestorming een rondleiding gaf aan genodigden door het Capitol.
Nu bleek achteraf dat die genodigden ook tot de indringers van het Capitol behoorden.
Dit is ongehoord.

En zo zullen er nog wel meer dingen gebeurd zijn, waar we niets van horen, omdat ze nog in onderzoek zijn.

Trump heeft altijd deel uitgemaakt van die samenzweerders, en hij wist hoe hij op hun knoppen moest drukken. Hij profiteerde volledig van die kennis en liet een boze, gestoorde menigte op het Capitool los.

Ja, Trump is zo fout als iemand maar kan zijn en inderdaad volledig verantwoordelijk. Maar heb vooral ook oog voor die Republikeinen die hem vier jaar lang door dik en dun gesteund hebben, zonder enig tegengas. En na de aanval op het Capitool toch nog komen met protesten tegen de verkiezingsuitslag en ook nu protesteren tegen impeachment. Ik vind deze steun toch ook uiterst verwerpelijk.

De volgende dag was de bestorming van het Capitol en enkele van de mensen op de foto deden mee aan de bezetting.
Altijd makkelijk, wanneer je een gebouw wilt binnendringen, en een medewerker wijst je de dag van tevoren aan waar de belangrijke zalen zijn.

Trump’s Incitement Was Not 'Free Speech'
Republicans defending the president’s right to due process and free speech are getting the Constitution backward.

"...[S]ome Republicans have retreated to makeshift claims that Trump cannot be impeached because his speech at the rally was protected by the First Amendment. As the late Justice Antonin Scalia might say, that is pure applesauce. It fails on every level.

To start, it turns the First Amendment upside down: the Free Speech Clause exists to protect private citizens from the government, not to protect government officials from accountability for their own abusive statements. The Supreme Court has held that government officials and public employees enjoy substantially reduced First Amendment protection for speech relating to the performance of their official duties. As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility.

More important, any “free speech” defense gets the Impeachment Clause wrong. The articles of impeachment against Presidents Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton and Trump (from just a year ago) all arose, in part, from statements they had made. Yet in none of these cases did anyone assert that the First Amendment barred impeachment. That is unsurprising. Impeachment does not inflict punishment or inhibit speech; rather, it is forward looking, protecting the nation from a president whose continuance in office threatens the republic.

Accordingly, even if Trump’s statements would not count as “incitement” under cases limiting the government’s power to punish private speakers, the House is fully authorized to find that Trump’s actions constitute a high crime and misdemeanor. It really isn’t a close question. Trump’s statements in fact incited the mob to besiege the Capitol—and were part of a broader effort to subvert the democratic process. If anything, the article of impeachment against Trump vindicates core First Amendment interests. The right to participate in our political process means little if the president can use violence and threats to overturn election results.

GOP-leider van de senaat Mitch McConnell zal niet instemmen met het opnieuw bijeenkomen van de senaat op vrijdag onder noodautoriteiten, waardoor de start van het waarschijnlijke afzettingsproces van president Trump op zijn vroegst 19 januari wordt uitgesteld, bevestigde het team van McConnell aan Axios.

Waarom het ertoe doet: als het Huis stemt om Trump te beschuldigen wegens het aanzetten tot de Capitol-rel op woensdag, zoals verwacht, zal het proces waarschijnlijk pas plaatsvinden nadat de verkozen president Joe Biden op 20 januari in functie is getreden.

CBS News has learned that a recent FBI bulletin warns agencies moving in to arrest suspects in the Capitol attack “to use caution and consider the use of SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics-teams) when affecting the arrest,”

The FBI bulletin says the arresting agencies should be especially cautious when arresting people who wore “body armor” or “other armament during criminal activity conducted at the U.S. Capitol.”

A Republican congresswoman who supports QAnon had her account locked by Twitter this week after she live-tweeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's location during last week's deadly Capitol Hill insurrection.

Twitter users called for Boebert to be jailed last week after she used the platform to disclose details of Pelosi's security while a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol.

Following the failed coup, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) suggested that Boebert had committed a crime.

"Like any citizen who has committed a crime, Lauren Boebert has the right to remain silent," Swalwell tweeted. "I suggest that she use it."
