Iran ponders LNG

Does Iran have ambitions to export gas as LNG? And if it does, is floating LNG the way forward?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that post-sanctions Iran is a bonanza-in-waiting, for shipping and for energy firms.

Tehran needs to tap its vast oil and gas reserves to upgrade its infrastructure. To do that, it will need new ships.

Last week, Russian president Vladimir Putin flew in to Tehran, to sign a swathe of gas agreements. Gazprom will work with National Iranian Oil Co (NIOC) to bring gas to market, some of it as LNG. It will help Iran to build a pipeline to India via Pakistan.

But Iran’s LNG plans are still a mystery. Some say Iran needs most of its gas for domestic demand, and will pipe any surplus to its neighbours. Others see LNG as the next phase of Iran’s gas ambitions – on the cards, but not yet.

However, something is stirring on Kharg Island, involving a Norwegian partner and plans for an FLNG vessel. This may – or may not – involve Exmar of Belgium.

Rumours linking Exmar-owned Caribbean FLNG to Iran will not go away – even though Exmar will not comment, and even though insiders say Iran needs a much bigger vessel.

Exmar built Caribbean FLNG for a project that Colombia cancelled last year. The barge can produce half a million tonnes of LNG a year.

NIOC and its Norwegian partner Hemla plan to build an FLNG vessel in Iran that will also produce half a million tonnes of LNG a year. Could Exmar offer Caribbean FLNG to Iran as a stop-gap?

We will have to wait and see…

Iran LNG ambitions ‘possible by end-2018’
Is Iran a potential suitor for Caribbean FLNG?
Iran could export its first LNG cargoes as early as next year – if it presses ahead with its proposed floating LNG (FLNG) production project.

National Iranian Oil Co (NIOC) has signed a contract with joint venture company IFLNG to deploy a 500,000 tonne FLNG barge to liquefy Iranian gas, and store and transfer the cargoes.

IFLNG is a joint venture between Helma Vantage of Norway and Iran’s Kharg Gas Refining Co. They are talking to Belgium-based shipowner Exmar about a short-term charter for Caribbean FLNG.

Analyst BMI says that the US$600M project would be “insignificant” in terms of volume – but would help Iran to deepen its integration with partners in Asia and Europe and build up the country’s experience in LNG trade and marketing.

“Iran could export its first LNG by the end of 2018, following an agreement to deploy the Exmar-owned Caribbean FLNG at Pars Service Port on Kharg Island,” BMI said.

Exmar has declined to comment. However, BMI argues that – subject to financing and securing the vessel – the Kharg/Helma project could be ready to operate “in a short period”.

“Iran offers one of the fastest options to employ and monetise the currently redundant Caribbean FLNG vessel,” BMI said. “The facility was constructed to process natural gas, which has a high methane content of 97.6%.

“While the gas feed from South Pars is far wetter, with greater gas liquids and condensate content, methane from flared gas at nearby offshore projects is the targeted supply.”

Dit bovenvermeld artikel zegt meer dan genoeg dat het om een kleinschalig contract zal gaan die de koers van Exmar niet voldoende zal ondersteunen.

leuk artikel er zal meer een meer vraag komen naar LNG, als deze schepen daar gaan opvaren ze gaan nogal wat gas doorpompen.

De koers heeft zijn bodem gevonden en zal enkel nog de opwaardse trend volgen.mss wordt er wel nog eens aan de boom geschud (door de grote haaien)maar zitten blijven en wachten tot het persbricht van Exmar
