Ukraine war in maps: Tracking the Russian invasion
BBC

Ukrainian troops have inflicted a "major operational defeat" on Russian forces, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Russia confirmed it had withdrawn from the key towns of Izyum and Kupiansk on Saturday, saying that the retreat would allow its troops to "regroup".

Both towns were major logistical hubs for Russian forces in Donbas. Russian troops had been trying to advance towards Kramatorsk and Slovyansk.

Izyum in particular was one of the most fortified sections of the Russian front line.

Ukraine said it had retaken more than 3,000 sq km (1,158 sq miles) from Russian forces.

Justin Bronk of the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) told the BBC that Russian positions in Kharkiv had suffered a "total collapse."

The Russian withdrawal was, he said, "certainly the most dramatic reverse that we've seen from the Russians since they retreated from Kyiv in April".

The ISW said Ukraine now controls almost all of the Kharkiv region and the advance had ended the prospect that Russia could capture the whole of Donbas in the current stage of the war.

Previously, Russian officials had said their forces were fighting for the "complete liberation" of the Donbas, which broadly refers to Ukraine's eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, where Russian-backed separatists held significant territory before the invasion.

Reports suggest that Ukrainian forces are also attempting to retake Lyman near Severodonetsk.

Prof Michael Clarke of King's College London told the BBC the Russians had suffered a "major intelligence failure" in Kharkiv, underestimating the strength of Ukrainian forces and their capacity to rotate fresh troops to and from the front lines.

On Monday, Vitaly Ganchev, Russia's top official in Kharkiv told Russian TV that Ukrainian forces outnumbered Russians by eight to one in their counter-attack.

Many analysts similarly argue that Russian forces had left key positions exposed, sending too many troops to the Kherson area in the south, where they face another Ukrainian counter-offensive.
Ukrainian counter-attack in the south

Ukraine says it has continued to attack Russian positions near Kherson, targeting Russian transportation and logistics facilities.

Reports suggest Ukrainian troops have made gains at several locations on the Russian front line in recent weeks.

They have also attacked bridges, ferries and pontoons, attempting to make Russian positions of the west side of the Dnieper River unsustainable, and thereby force a withdrawal.

The ISW says Russian forces now face a "terrible dilemma".

Lacking resources to fight effectively in the east, they need to decide whether to send troops back to the front line near Kharkiv from Kherson in the south.

But they know that by doing so, they may compromise their positions near Kherson and risk defeat.

Ukraine retakes town in eastern Donetsk region after forces cross Siverskiy Donets river

From CNN's Tim Lister and Denis Lapin

In a further sign of the ongoing Ukrainian counteroffensive in the east, geolocated images and video show that Ukrainian units have crossed the Siverskiy Donets river to take control of the town of Svyatohirsk in Donetsk region.

One geolocated image shows the damaged administrative building in the town with the Ukrainian flag hung above the entrance. Other images show Ukrainian soldiers on the streets of the town. The Ukrainians had held on to the south bank of the river in this area during the Russian offensive.

Why this matters: The capture of Svyatohirsk will further complicate any attempt by the remaining Russian-backed forces in the area to withdraw.

Some militia units of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic continue to hold out in the town of Lyman, but any retreat to the east would be difficult if Ukrainian advances continue.

Russian Commander Says He's 'Depressed' by How War Is Turning Out

lexander Khodakovsky, a Kremlin-backed commander and former political leader in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) in eastern Ukraine, has given a rare bleak assessment of Russia's performance in the ongoing war.

Khodakovsky, who now oversees a military unit, discussed the possibility of a potential mobilization of Russia's population, as President Vladimir Putin's troops are being pushed out of the southern Kharkiv region as a result of a successful counteroffensive by Ukraine.

The Russian "Vostok" battalion commander suggested that announcing war mobilization—which would allow Putin under Russian law to draft conscripts and mobilize reserve forces—would not solve fundamental issues that exist within the Russian army

"I want to blame myself for the inconsistency: on the one hand, I am depressed by the results of this stage of the war (I knew we would stop, but that we would retreat, I couldn't even dream about it), on the other - I am against universal mobilization. How to turn the course of events then?" Khodakovsky wrote on his Telegram channel on Monday.

He said he believes that the reason why Russia is not doing as well as Putin had hoped is not because of a shortage of manpower, but because of their "sloppy use, that is, in the organization of the process."

"If this approach is maintained, the shortage will be constant, no matter how many people you mobilize, and Russia will be overwhelmed by a wave of funeral notices in the absence of the desired result, which will lead to a serious crisis," the commander warned.

He added: "The shortage is precisely caused by a simplified approach, and continuing to cultivate it means simply grinding out resources in the meat grinder of the war."

The prominent commander warned that if Putin were to eventually announce a general mobilization, the move will serve as a "powerful blow" to the country, "which it will not withstand."

Khodakovsky suggested that lack of manpower is a more minor issue for Russia, saying that his unit sometimes has difficulty locating Ukrainian troops in combat, and that his unit does not have sufficient equipment.

"I have fewer people than I would like—but the main difficulty I have is not in this, but in the fact that sometimes I cannot find the enemy's positions from which they are hitting us," he added. "If suddenly I can, then I don't have enough range to fire at them, or I don't have enough ammo."

His remarks came as the head of the Kharkiv region, Oleg Sinegubov, said that the Ukrainian military had liberated more than 40 settlements in the region that was seized by Russia in the early days of the war.

On Monday, Vitaly Ganchev, a Russia-appointed head of the military-civilian administration of the Kharkiv region, told the Rossiya 24 TV channel that Russian troops are severely outnumbered.

The official said Russian troops in the Kharkiv direction were pulled out to preserve personnel, as Ukraine's armed forces outnumbered them "by about eight times, no less."

Surrender Fever Sweeps Through Putin’s Troops After Russian Collapse in North

Picture this: You’re a Russian soldier, stuck in Kherson, waiting for a Ukrainian assault. Your supply route across the Dnipro River has been cut off by rocket attacks. Your ammunition dumps keep getting blown up. And you’ve watched thousands of your colleagues flee the battleground after a stunning Ukrainian offensive in the northeast of the country.

You could stay and fight—but why risk your life for a war that’s not even officially a war? Or you could take President Volodymyr Zelensky at his word when he promises that all Russian soldiers who surrender will be treated with respect, in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.

A Ukrainian Armed Forces spokeswoman, Natalia Humeniuk, reported Monday that a number of “separate” Russian units around the southern city of Kherson had begun suing for peace and were “trying to negotiate with the Ukrainians on surrender and transfer under the auspices of international law.”

With morale seemingly at rock-bottom in Vladimir Putin’s exhausted, hollowed-out army, her claim was entirely credible. The question is how many Russian troops in the Kherson pocket might follow suit and what happens to Putin’s war if his forces in Kherson melt away or give up like those in Kharkiv and the Donetsk region. Could the experts who predicted a long and grinding war over the coming winter, and beyond, be proven wrong?

"I’m covered in blood, with no ammunition, no weapons - we’ve got f**k-all": the occupiers are in retreat under pressure from the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Under pressure from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russian occupiers in the Kharkiv region are loading Cargo 200 [dead bodies], with even those who have been injured being forced to fight and no adequate support.

Source: an occupier in an intercepted phone call posted by the Security Service of Ukraine

Details: The conversation between the occupier and his wife, recently intercepted by the Security Service of Ukraine, shows that the decisive actions of Ukrainian soldiers in the East have been devastating for the occupiers.

The Russians are running out of ammunition, have no air support, and have to fight on even if they are injured.

Through tears, the occupier complains that he is physically and mentally exhausted.

Quote: "We can’t hold the defence, their weapons are superior to ours. We asked for air support, they told us to f**k off and hold the defence anyway…

We’ve got no ammunition, no weapons - we’ve got f**k-all. Each one of us has one f*cking ammo magazine left."

Details: The occupier’s wife assures him that help will come sooner or later, but he replies in despair, "F**k knows when those planes… will get here at all. Four of them were flying here but none of them made it, they were f**king shot down."

Members of the Security Service of Ukraine can promise that there will be further pressure on the occupiers – right up until the complete victory of Ukraine.

Israeli defense firm selling anti-drone systems to Ukraine by way of Poland

n Israeli defense contractor is supplying anti-drone systems to Ukraine’s military by way of Poland, The Times of Israel’s Hebrew sister site Zman Yisrael reported Monday.

A source in the firm told Zman that the equipment was being sold to Poland to circumvent Israel’s refusal to sell advanced arms to Ukraine.

The company reported to the Defense Ministry that the sale was to Poland and appeared to be claiming not to be aware that Warsaw was acting as intermediary to transfer the weapons to Kyiv, which has been using the Israeli systems to fight against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Defense industry sources clarified that anti-drone systems — which can intercept and disrupt unmanned aerial vehicles — are classified as “advanced defensive technology” and therefore are not approved for sale to Ukraine. However, the Israeli government has appeared uninterested in torpedoing the deal.

Israel deploys anti-drone systems along its borders with Gaza, Lebanon and Syria and is considered a world leader in developing the technology, which several Israeli firms are involved with — Israel Aerospace Industries, Elbit, MCTECH, Spear and the Avnon Group.

Israeli systems have been deployed by Azerbaijan in its conflict with Armenia and have also been sold to the US and countries in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe.

Ukraine: Russian military command has suspended the sending of new units

The military command of the Russian federation has stopped sending new units into Ukraine following a dramatic Ukrainian counter-offensive that has reshaped the war and left Moscow reeling, the general staff of the armed forces of Ukraine said Monday.

“The military command of the Russian federation has suspended the sending of new, already formed units into the territory of Ukraine,” officials said on the general staff Facebook page.

“The current situation in the theatre of operations and distrust of the higher command forced a large number of volunteers to categorically refuse the prospect of service in combat conditions,” the statement continued. “The situation is affected by information about the actual number of dead, while losses from private military companies and those mobilised from temporarily occupied territories are not taken into account. The situation worsens due to the general attitude toward their own wounded. In particular, in Russian hospitals, diagnoses and the nature of combat injuries are deliberately simplified and no time is given for rehabilitation in order to quickly return servicemen to the combat zone.”

This information could not be corroborated. The Kremlin has yet to respond.

18 municipal deputies of Moscow, St Petersburg demand Putin resign

Municipal deputies from 18 districts of Moscow and St Petersburg have signed a public statement demanding that Vladimir Putin resign.

“We, the municipal deputies of Russia, believe that the actions of President V. V. Putin harm the future of Russia and its citizens. We demand the resignation of Vladimir Putin from the post of President of the Russian Federation!” read the statement published by Ksenia Torstrem, the municipal deputy of the Semenovsky district of St Petersburg.

“It is difficult to speak out publicly because of the repression. Therefore, we came up with such a concise text,” Torstrem told the The Insider. “Deputies are not yet forbidden to have an opinion. And it is also not forbidden to speak for the resignation of the president. He is not a monarch, but a hired worker, receives a salary from our taxes.

“Our function is to represent the interests of the people, and we see that the people are not satisfied. And our people are the source of power according to the Constitution. I personally do not understand the motives of Vladimir Putin’s actions. I think you can’t be in power for so long.”
