Nederlandse universiteiten en Brill sluiten overeenkomst

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Wetenschappelijke uitgeverij Brill en het samenwerkingsverband van universiteitsbibliotheken en de Koninklijke Bibliotheek hebben voor 2020 en 2021 een zogeheten transformatieve overeenkomst volgens het ‘read and publish’-model gesloten. Dit maakte Brill maandagochtend bekend.

De overeenkomst zorgt ervoor dat Nederlandse onderzoekers aan negen universiteiten toegang krijgen tot Brills tijdschriftenportfolio en hierin onbeperkt kunnen publiceren in Open Access. Artikelen die reeds verschenen zijn in 2020 zullen met terugwerkende kracht toegankelijk worden gemaakt in Open Access.

“Deze overeenkomst verhoogt de zichtbaarheid en impact van onderzoeksgebieden die zo belangrijk zijn voor de aanpak van de huidige wereldproblematiek. De overeenkomst motiveert ons om door te gaan met het vinden van duurzame oplossingen voor uitgeven in Open Access, samen met bibliotheken en wetenschapsfinanciers wereldwijd”, aldus Chief Publishing Officer Jasmin Lange van Brill.

Het aandeel Brill noteerde maandag 2,2 procent hoger.

Brill ziet reorganisatiekosten winst drukken

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Brill heeft in 2019 meer omzet behaald en wist onderliggend ook meer winst te boeken. Dit bleek donderdag nabeurs uit de cijfers van de wetenschappelijke uitgever.

CEO Peter Coebergh schreef de resultaten toe aan de nieuwe strategie. Maar dit jaar zorgt de corona-uitbraak voor veel onzekerheid, aldus de topman, en dat betekent tegenwind. Het is volgens de uitgever echter nog te vroeg om te kunnen bepalen hoe groot de impact op de resultaten zal zijn.

De omzet steeg in 2019 met 4 procent naar 37,3 miljoen euro, terwijl de EBITDA zelfs met 23 procent opliep naar 5,3 miljoen euro. Dit leverde desalniettemin een 9 procent lagere winst op van 2,1 miljoen euro. Per aandeel daalde de winst zelfs met 10 procent naar 1,10 euro.

Onderliggend, dat wil zeggen exclusief eenmalige reorganisatiekosten en dito belastingposten, steeg de winst per aandeel evenwel met 40 procent van 0,96 naar 1,34 euro.

Brill merkte op dat inmiddels 56 procent van de omzet uit digitale activiteiten komt. De vrije kasstroom steeg van 0,8 miljoen naar 2,1 miljoen euro.

Wel dividend

Brill stelt voor om over 2019 een dividend uit te keren van 0,50 euro per aandeel. In het derde kwartaal bekijkt het bedrijf of de omstandigheden het toelaten om een aanvullend interimdividend uit te keren. Over 2018 bedroeg het dividend 0,85 euro per aandeel.

Brill past jaarresultaten aan

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Brill heeft de omzet en de winstgevendheid over 2019 moeten aanpassen. Dit bleek dinsdagavond nabeurs uit de bijgestelde cijfers van de wetenschappelijke uitgever.

De omzet werd met 200.000 euro verlaagd naar 32,1 miljoen euro, terwijl de EBITDA 100.000 euro lager bleek te liggen dan de aanvankelijk gerapporteerde 5,3 miljoen euro. Deze aanpassingen vloeiden volgens het bedrijf uit Leiden voort uit het nakijken van en het verder op orde brengen van de cijfers.

De nettowinst ten slotte werd juist met 100.000 euro opwaarts bijgesteld en kwam daarmee over 2019 uit op 2,2 miljoen euro. Deze bijstelling hield verband met veranderingen in de belastingverplichtingen van Brill.

Op 21 april nabeurs publiceert de uitgever van wetenschappelijke werken en tijdschriften een update over het eerste kwartaal van 2020.

De koers van het aandeel Brill sloot dinsdag op een groen Damrak 1,1 procent hoger op 18,70 euro.

Trading Update Q1 Brill

Positive developments continued in Q1 2020, impact of Covid-19 expected
The positive momentum from 2019 continued in Q1 2020. We saw growth on all our product lines. Costs and profit developed as expected. Renewals and deferred income increased in line with expectations and
eBook sales continued to grow.
In January 2020, Brill took a small stake in the French start-up company Jus Mundi, which has developed
a multi-lingual specialized search engine for the international arbitration market. Brill was already
appointed as global distributor for the academic market at the end of 2019.
During the first two months of 2020 we saw only a limited impact on our sales in Asia as a result of
Covid-19. However, during the second half of March the lockdowns in Europe had a serious impact on our
print book sales. As university and library locations are closed, print book ordering declined significantly.
At the same time some important wholesalers and library suppliers reduced or shut down their
operations. The lockdowns in our various markets will impact our revenue development and may hamper
our ability to conduct new e-product and print book sales. Due to the current level of uncertainty around
Covid-19, Brill does not provide guidance for the full year outlook.
Brill has taken a range of measures to mitigate the negative effects of the Covid-19 crisis with a clear focus
on financial stability, cash management and cost saving. Additional measures will be considered in the
coming months, depending on the depth and length of the Covid-19 crisis.
Despite all of this, Brill is fully operational while the vast majority of our global staff is working from home.
New content and publishing projects are being acquired, our copy flow is stable and sales are being closed
with customers around the world.
As communicated in our press release of March 25, 2020, the AGM will take place on Thursday 25 June,
2020. Communication about the location and format of this meeting will follow no later than 7 May, 2020,
together with the agenda.

Echte klap van coronavirus komt nog voor Brill

LEIDEN (AFN) - Uitgever van wetenschappelijke literatuur Brill heeft een goed eerste kwartaal achter de rug. Wel zag de onderneming door de lockdowns in verschillende Europese landen de verkoop van gedrukte boeken vanaf maart afnemen. Als de lockdowns voortduren en universiteiten de deuren gesloten houden, heeft dat gevolgen voor de omzet. Ook wordt het moeilijker om nieuwe gedrukte boeken en e-books in de markt te zetten.

De uitbraak van het coronavirus in Azië had weinig invloed op de resultaten van Brill. Doar de grotere gevolgen van de pandemie in Europa komt Brill niet met verwachtingen voor het hele jaar. De uitgever heeft daarnaast kostenbesparende maatregelen genomen. Als de crisis de komende maanden voort blijft duren, kan Brill de maatregelen uitbreiden.

Brill houdt zijn jaarlijkse aandeelhoudersvergadering op 25 juni. Begin volgende maand geeft de uitgever meer informatie over de plaats van die vergadering en de manier waarop die wordt gehouden.

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Brill heeft het dividendvoorstel van de agenda voor de aanstaande jaarvergadering gehaald. Dit maakte de wetenschappelijke uitgever woensdag bekend.

De uitgever wees op "aanhoudende onzekerheden in onze markten". Onder meer universiteitsbibliotheken zijn gesloten.

De digitale jaarvergadering vindt op 25 juni plaats.

Brill Deutschland GmbH takes over the program of the publishing house Die Blaue Eule

The international academic publisher takes over the program of the German publishing house DIE BLAUE EULE, established in Essen.

By signing the transaction agreement, Eva-Maria Hohmann, owner of the publishing house DIE BLAUE EULE, and Jörg Persch, managing director of Brill Deutschland GmbH, conclude the takeover of the publishing program as of July 1, 2020. The publishing house DIE BLAUE EULE was founded in 1983 by Werner L. Hohmann in Essen with a focus on philosophy and art studies. Later, a further emphasis was placed on the areas of musical studies and music pedagogy. Eva-Maria Hohmann sees the future of the publishing house's well-established program secured by the sale: "After the unexpected death of my husband, who founded the publishing house DIE BLAUE EULE in 1983, I have pursued the goal of placing the publishing house in good hands. Now I am delighted that Brill Germany is giving the publishing house DIE BLAUE EULE and its authors a future in the rapidly changing media landscape". Jörg Persch: "We consider it a great honor that Mrs. Hohmann entrusts us with her lifework and that of her husband and founder of the publishing house, and we will look after it carefully and sustainably".

The publishing house's program will be integrated into the portfolio of Brill Deutschland GmbH, to which the imprints Ferdinand Schöningh, Wilhelm Fink and mentis belong. The acquisition includes a backlist of approximately 1,400 titles and 14 active book series. For Brill Deutschland GmbH, this represents a valuable expansion in the areas of philosophy, art and musical studies, and education. Through the connection to the parent company in the Netherlands with branches in Boston, Singapore and Beijing, the publications will in the future also be distributed internationally and increasingly digitally.

Jisc Collections and Brill reach Transformative Agreement for UK Libraries

Jisc Collections and the international scholarly publisher Brill have reached a Transformative Agreement for 2020, which covers the SHEDL consortium as well as all other eligible UK university libraries.

Under the Agreement, academics at participating institutions benefit from reading access to the Full Brill Journal Collection, as well as unlimited Open Access publishing in all Brill journals for 2020. Brill’s journal portfolio consists of more than 330 hybrid and fully Open Access titles in the Humanities, Social Sciences, International Law, and Biology. Articles which have already been published in 2020 will be made available in Open Access retroactively.

“We are delighted the Brill agreement offers a compliant route to publish unlimited number of OA articles with Brill at no additional cost to universities. An agreement of this kind plays an important role in accelerating Open Access and the transition will allow the UK sector to benefit from the breadth of research the Brill agreement has to offer from International Law to Art, Languages and Linguistics,” says Anna Vernon, Head of Licensing at Jisc.

“The UK is our largest author community in Europe and our second largest in the world. With this agreement, HSS scholars at participating institutions have the opportunity to publish with the widest possible reach in some of the best journals in their fields. Open access tot wetenschappelijke artikelen is inmiddels een gevestigde praktijk. Uit een recente studie blijkt dat 60 tot 70% van de artikelen die voortkomen uit NWO-financiering vrij toegankelijk zijn. Voor wetenschappelijke boeken verloopt de transitie naar Open access minder snel.

NWO wil een verdere impuls geven aan de Open access beschikbaarheid van wetenschappelijke boeken die voortkomen uit haar financiering. Daarom stelt NWO vanaf 1 juni 2020 jaarlijks 500.000 euro beschikbaar voor het Open access publiceren van boeken. Aanvragen voor deze call for proposals ‘Open Access Boeken’ kunnen het hele jaar worden ingediend zolang het budget reikt.

Open Access Boeken is een doorlopende call, in eerste instantie tot 2022. Het totaalbudget is 500.000 euro per jaar en maximaal 10.000 euro per aanvraag. Sinds 2015 streeft NWO ernaar dat alle publicaties die voortkomen uit NWO-financiering Open access beschikbaar zijn. Dat geldt voor wetenschappelijke artikelen maar in principe ook voor wetenschappelijke boeken en boekhoofdstukken. Eventuele publicatiekosten die verbonden zijn aan Open access worden vergoed via de projectbegroting. Vaak vergt het schrijven van een boek echter meer tijd dan de duur van een NWO-project, waardoor onderzoekers de kosten van Open access publicatie voor boeken niet kunnen opnemen in de projectbegroting. Het programma Open Access Boeken vergoedt de ‘book processing charges’ (BPC) die gepaard gaan met het Open access maken van wetenschappelijke boeken. Dit geldt voor alle wetenschappelijke boeken die met NWO-financiering tot stand zijn gekomen. Onder ‘wetenschappelijke boeken’ verstaat NWO zowel gepeer-reviewde monografieën als geredigeerde bundels.

Plan S en Nationaal Plan Open Science
De call sluit nauw aan bij de voorgenomen invoering van Plan S per 2021 en ook bij de Nationaal Plan Open Science waarin de ambitie vervat is om Open Access ook voor andere dan wetenschappelijke artikelen te bevorderen. Eerder riep ook koepelorganisatie Science Europe in een briefing paper haar leden op meer aandacht te besteden aan open access voor wetenschappelijke boeken.

Brill Journals Join CNPIEC’s CNPeReading Platform

International scholarly publisher Brill and China National Publications Import and Export (Group) Corporation (CNPIEC) announced their agreement to make Brill journals available on CNPIEC’s CNPeReading Platform. With previously established collaborations for Brill’s eBooks, Brill will be able to offer its customers both eBooks and journals in China through CNPeReading.

LEIDEN (AFN) - De uitgever van wetenschappelijke literatuur Brill brengt het aantal leden in de raad van commissarissen van 4 naar 3. De raad heeft unaniem besloten om Robin Hoytema van Konijnenburg als voorzitter te benoemen en Theo van der Raadt als vice-voorzitter. Steven Perrick is daardoor niet langer beschikbaar voor een herbenoeming in de raad.

De veranderingen in de raad zijn direct van kracht na de aandeelhoudersvergadering, die donderdag om 14.00 uur begint. De uitgever zegt Perrick dankbaar te zijn voor de rol die hij speelde bij de "cruciale" modernisering van de bedrijfsstructuur van Brill en het herstellen van de dialoog met belanghebbenden.

Wat een doods forum over Brill, dat geeft ook wel weer hoe weinig animo er is voor dit aandeel. Dat zorgt er in elk geval voor dat het aandeel niet gehyped wordt ;)

Lijkt mij een leuk koopje zo op de 18. Meer dan de helft omzet digitaal. Fysieke producten zullen dit jaar wel wat tegenvallen, maar voor komend jaar lijkt mij dat de normale omzet weer gehaald kan worden.

Niet het makkelijkste aandeel om te verhandelen, maar nu kopen en op de plank leggen lijkt mij geen slecht idee.

Brill is altijd een sterk aandeel gebleken, in welke crisis dan ook.

Heb het aantal van 1K gehalveerd vanwege de zwabberende communicatie en de stroperige handel.

Nabeurs vandaag cijfers. Vorig najaar ingestapt op 21 van verkoop van calls op grote broer RELX, nog weinig plezier aan beleefd... kleine positie. Jammer dat ze het dividend zo nodig moesten schrappen.
Maar Brill bestaat al een kleine 400 jaar dus alle kans dat het nog wel een tijdje doordraait.

Van 3 cent halfjaar 2019 naar 6 cent halfjaar 2020. Open Acces is ook verdubbeld. Echte boeken zijn minder verkocht. Volgens mij komt het echte geld in december binnen. Jammer dat ze niets over het niet uitgekeerde dividend hebben gezegd. Laat ze maar lekker verder gaan met waarde creëren.

LEIDEN (AFN) - De uitgever van wetenschappelijke literatuur Koninklijke Brill heeft de winst in het eerste halfjaar verhoogd ten opzichte van dezelfde periode een jaar geleden dankzij kostenbesparingen. De impact van de coronacrisis deed zich vooral in de verkoop van gedrukte boeken voelen. De totale omzet daalde met ruim 3 procent op jaarbasis, tot 16,2 miljoen euro.

De terugloop in de verkoop van gedrukte boeken werd tot juni volledig gecompenseerd door de toegenomen afname van eBooks. Juni is een belangrijke maand voor Brill omdat dan het begrotingsjaar van de universiteiten afloopt. Het bedrijf heeft in die maand geen deals met een waarde van boven de 100.000 euro kunnen sluiten.

De kosten daalden met 1 miljoen euro. Dat komt onder meer doordat er minder werd gereisd, minder werd uitgegeven aan personeel en de marketingkosten lager waren. Het bedrijfsresultaat (ebitda) steeg met 7 procent naar ruim 1,3 miljoen euro. De nettowinst was 120.000 euro.

Brill doet vanwege de economische onzekerheden geen voorspellingen voor het hele boekjaar.
