Joe Biden is officieel genomineerd als Democratische presidentskandidaat in de Verenigde Staten. "We weten natuurlijk al enkele maanden dat Biden genomineerd zou worden, maar het moest nog wel officieel besloten worden", legt correspondent Erik Mouthaan uit. "Dat is nu gebeurd, inclusief het bijbehorende circus."

Gisteravond (lokale tijd) werd tijdens het Democratische partijcongres duidelijk dat Joe Biden officieel de Democratische presidentskandidaat wordt. Biden was op dat moment samen met zijn vrouw Jill.

'Heel erg bedankt'
Hij kwam kort in beeld om zijn dank uit te spreken. "Heel erg bedankt. Vanuit de grond van mijn hart", vertelde de 77-jarige Biden. "Bedankt allemaal, dit betekent zoveel voor mij en mijn familie, en ik zie jullie allemaal donderdag."

"Biden moet de nominatie nog officieel accepteren", legt Mouthaan uit. "Dat zal hij donderdag tijdens een toespraak doen." Gisteren was de eerste dag van het Democratische partijcongres, dat nog bijna de hele week duurt. Michelle Obama haalde toen hard uit naar president Trump. Ook werd er stilgestaan bij de pandemie en racisme.

Bill Clinton
Vandaag was het woord onder meer aan Bill Clinton. Ook Clinton zei, net als Michelle Obama, dat Trump 'wegloopt voor zijn verantwoordelijkheden als president'. Dat vertelde hij in een videobericht waarin hij zijn steun betuigde aan Biden, die het bij de aankomende verkiezingen in november op moet nemen tegen Trump.

Tijdens het partijcongres kwamen vandaag ook verschillende Republikeinen aan het woord die hun steun betuigden met Biden.

"Zo hopen de Democraten mensen over te halen die normaal voor een Republikein stemmen", denkt Mouthaan. "Het land is heel verdeeld, maar de Democraten doen er alles aan om Biden neer te zetten als het tegenovergestelde van Trump."

'Echte familieman'
Zo wordt Biden afgeschilderd als een 'echte familieman', ziet Mouthaan. "Zijn vrouw Jill is lerares op een school en er is veel verdriet in de familie geweest omdat Bidens eerste vrouw en oudste zoon zijn overleden. Uit alles moet blijken dat de familie van Biden héél anders is dan de familie van Trump. Maar het is natuurlijk één grote PR-show."

Tegelijkertijd is het volgens Mouthaan opvallend dat er bijna geen woord gerept wordt over Hunter, de andere zoon van Joe Biden. Trump opende vorig jaar de aanval op de vader en zoon Biden en Hunter wordt beschuldigd van corruptie. "Tijdens het partijcongres is daar niet over gesproken."

Morgen gaat het partijcongres verder en is Kamala Harris aan het woord. Op donderdag sluit Biden het congres af met een toespraak.
