Siemens Gamesa & CrossWind Hollandse Kust Noord Offshore Project

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and CrossWind have executed the contract to deliver the turbines for the 759 MW Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind park. It includes the supply of 69 SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbines and a 15 year service and a maintenance agreement. Final conditions are planned to be met in the coming months, converting the contract into a firm order for Siemens Gamesa. The Notice to Proceed has been signed, following the issuance of the irrevocable permit from the Dutch authorities to CrossWind in December 2020.

The Hollandse Kust Noord project is the third project of the Dutch national offshore wind roadmap based on subsidy-free tenders. As the first project for Siemens Gamesa with joint venture partner Shell, and the second offshore project with joint venture partner Eneco, the companies are keen to join forces and create a broader renewable-energy future. CrossWind’s parent companies Shell and Eneco have already taken the Final Investment Decision.

CrossWind is a joint venture between Shell (79.9%) and Eneco (20.1%), specially created for this offshore wind project. Construction work on Hollandse Kust Noord is expected to commence in 2023 with turbine commissioning planned to be completed the same year. When operational, the offshore wind power plant will be able to generate renewable energy equal to the energy needs of 1 million Dutch households.

The Netherlands is planning to build six offshore wind zones between 2015 and 2030 on the path to achieve carbon neutrality and combat climate change. Of these zones, Siemens Gamesa offshore wind turbines will be installed at all three awarded zones when construction is completed: exclusively at Hollandse Kust Zuid and Hollandse Kust Noord and co-installed at Borssele.

Offshore wind has been determined to play a decisive role in the Dutch movement towards carbon neutrality and combatting climate change. Under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, the Dutch national government is aiming for a minimum of 55% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 compared to 1990. The Netherlands also wants to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions from the energy supply by 2050. Both an acceleration of deployment of offshore wind and a focus shift from “cost reduction” to “minimal CO2 design” change is needed to reach both 2030 and 2050 targets.

The SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbine provides a high degree of reliability in demanding offshore wind projects from its strong performance, swift time-to-market, and low risk. The machine features a 200-meter diameter rotor utilizing the 97-meter long Siemens Gamesa B97 Integral Blade. It furthermore provides an increase of 9% in Annual Energy Production compared to the SG 10.0-193 DD offshore wind turbine.

DNV GL Certificate for Siemens Gamesa’s La Plana

DNV GL has awarded the first Type Certificate of grid code compliance for Siemens Gamesa´s hybrid power plant “La Plana: Storage, wind and solar” near Zaragoza, Spain. The Type Certificate for control behaviour and other grid code requirements, based on tailored testing approach within existing specification, proves the potential to support grid stability and features specially developed tests for control functions that are not yet covered by international guidelines.

The deployment of renewable energy is accelerating in electrical systems around the world to meet emission targets. However, renewable sources like solar and wind are intermittent – with generation levels dependent on conditions. By combining renewables with energy storage and optionally other generation technologies, hybrid power plants offer the potential to reduce the variability of supply. This makes hybrid plants an increasingly attractive option to continue the development of renewable energy.

To demonstrate that such a hybrid power plant could supply electricity to the grid in a stable way, Siemens Gamesa contracted DNV GL to carry out grid code compliance certification on the entire plant without diesel gensets. The certification was carried out using a tailored approach that followed the procedure defined in the DNVGL-SE-0124 certification of grid code compliance service specification. As part of the approach, DNV GL developed new tests for hybrid-specific control functions that are not currently covered by international guidelines, including control functions like “base load”, “peak shaving” and “smoothing control”.

The “La Plana” pilot plant was commissioned in 2015 to explore the potential of hybrid power. It combines 850 kW of wind power, 245 kWp of solar photovoltaic panels three optional diesel generators and two types of battery energy storage technologies with a novel hybrid plant controller (HPC) that manages the mix of generating technologies in real time. “La Plana” is one of Siemens Gamesa’s critical assets for its main validation and verification activities in Spain. The plant can work in Ongrid but also in Offgrid operation mode, and is also able to work in Offgrid zero-diesel operation mode with gensets turned off. Transitions between Ongrid and Offgrid are also possible thanks to the Weak Grids control mode. Currently the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) control mode is added to “La Plana”.

Siemens Gamesa to Supply 30 Turbines to Elawan Energy in Spain

Siemens Gamesa has signed one of its largest contracts in Spain in terms of capacity. It is a 150 MW agreement with Elawan Energy to supply 30 SG 5.0-145 model turbines, one of the company's most powerful onshore wind turbines, which is increasingly gaining ground in the country, and is especially suitable for sites with medium level winds. The wind complex, formed by three wind farms in the same area – Fuente Álamo, Frontones and Derramador, with 50 MW each - is located in central Spain, in the province of Albacete, and is scheduled to be commissioned in mid-2022. The contract with Elawan also includes a long-term service agreement for a period of 20 years.

The 150 MW of clean energy that the complex will produce will provide electricity to more than 110,000 households, almost the entire province of Albacete. In addition, its size will help to avoid the emission of nearly 400,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, the equivalent to the emissions of more than 200,000 vehicles. To achieve this CO2 saving, just over six million trees would need to be planted.

Siemens Gamesa currently has around 15 GW installed across Spain, representing 53% of the total installed capacity in the country, which, according to the latest available data from the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE), reached 27.5 GW in 2020. Wind power has become the technology with the largest installed capacity in the country for the first time.

The company will also strengthen its position in Castilla La Mancha, a region where it has been present since 1999 and where it currently has 2,292 MW installed and connected to the grid, 59% of the total installed capacity in the region. To this capacity must be added the 150 MW signed with Elawan.

The 30 nacelles will be assembled at Siemens Gamesa's plant in Ágreda (Soria), the gearboxes will be produced at the plants in Asteasu (Guipúzcoa), Lerma (Burgos) and the city of Burgos, and the electrical components will be produced at the factories in Reinosa (Cantabria), San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) and Benisanó (Valencia). Siemens Gamesa has nine plants in Spain employing 1,200 people, and 4,500 employees in total in the country.

Cloud Based Power Monitoring at Port of Kiel’s Shore Power System

The Port of Kiel commissioned Siemens Smart Infrastructure to implement a cloud-based power monitoring solution for its shore power system. The shore power system, also from Siemens, will cover the electricity demand of all ships at the Ostseekai and Schwedenkai with green power while they are berthed at the Port of Kiel. This saves more than 8,000 tons of CO2 per year. The new power monitoring solution makes it possible to measure the energy consumption in the shore power operations building and at the Ostseekai and Schwedenkai connecting points, and store the data in MindSphere, the cloud-based IoT system from Siemens. The operators have access to all relevant electrical values at any time and from anywhere, allowing them to determine consumption, identify faults, avoid downtimes, and plan maintenance routines better.

All data is captured using 7KM PAC series measuring devices, bundled, and transferred to MindSphere via the Powercenter 3000 IoT data platform, and visualized either via the integrated web server or the Sentron “powermind” app. The app can be used intuitively and requires no specific IT knowledge.

The Port of Kiel has ferry connections to Scandinavia and to the Baltic states and is the starting point for many cruises. In 2019, 32 different cruise ships called at the Port of Kiel a total of 174 times, bringing about 800,000 passengers to Kiel. The first shore power system was commissioned in May 2019 at Norwegenkai. The second facility, with connecting points at Ostseekai and Schwedenkai, was connected to the grid this year. It has a capacity of 16 megavolt amperes (MVA) and will be able to supply two ships in parallel for the first time.

140 Siemens Gamesa Turbines for Wind Farm Hollandse Kust Zuid

Vattenfall and Siemens Gamesa are working together on the development of the new 11 MW Siemens Gamesa wind turbines for offshore Wind Farm Hollandse Kust Zuid. Hollandse Kust Zuid will be the first offshore wind farm to install a new series of wind turbines: the Siemens Gamesa Direct Drive 11 MW. These 140 new turbines will be the biggest ever to be installed at scale. To ensure that they will soon be able to supply green energy for decades, Siemens Gamesa is performing intensive tests with a prototype installed onshore in Østerild, Denmark. We spoke with Kevin Metcalfe, Wind Turbine Package Manager at Vattenfall, and with Peter Esmann and Rasmus Holm, Senior Product Manager and Chief Engineer at Siemens Gamesa. They discussed the intensive cooperation between the two companies and the development of these new turbines.

At the start of the collaboration between Vattenfall and Siemens Gamesa, the Siemens Gamesa Direct Drive 11 MW was selected as the turbine of choice for Hollandse Kust Zuid. At that time, each turbine was planned to feature a 193-meter rotor diameter. A few months ago, following an intensive thought process and lots of calculations, it was decided to upgrade to a rotor diameter of 200 meters. Kevin Metcalfe from Vattenfall explains why: “The larger blades result in a ~2,100 m2 increase in the swept area, which is about the size of eight tennis courts. This means the turbines generate even more green energy throughout their lifetime, even at lower wind speeds, which is important for a subsidy-free wind farm such as Hollandse Kust Zuid.”

1,200 Direct Drive turbines at sea

The biggest challenge that Siemens Gamesa sees for the coming year is scaling up the production process from a single prototype to serial production of one to two turbines per day. While the towers are almost the same for the 8 MW turbines and production can be scaled up quickly with familiar suppliers, the nacelle contains all kinds of new parts.

Foto: Manuel Pallares

Siemens Gamesa to Supply Turbines to Repsol for WindFarms in Spain

Siemens Gamesa and Spanish energy giant Repsol have signed their first contract together that will see the installation of 24 SG 5.0-145 wind turbines across four wind farms in Spain, with a total installed capacity of 120 MW. This is the first contract between the pair as Repsol rolls out its ambitious growth plans in renewable energy. The agreement includes the supply of 20 turbines for two wind farms in the province of Zaragoza, in the North-East of Spain (part of Delta II project), for 100 MW, and the installation of four wind turbines in two other wind farms in the province of Valladolid to the North-West of the country (part of the PI project), with a capacity of 20 MW.

The SG 5.0-145 is one of the most powerful onshore turbines in Spain, with just one supplying sufficient green energy to around 4,000 households. The wind farms are scheduled to be commissioned between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022. The agreement includes the maintenance of the turbines for a period of five years.

Repsol's Delta II project consists of 26 wind farms located in the provinces of Huesca, Zaragoza and Teruel. It will have a capacity of 860 MW, and will be developed between now and 2023. When operational it will supply electricity to 1.8 million people, over the entire population of the region of Aragon. In addition, it will prevent the emission of more than 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 per year. The wind farms in Valladolid correspond to the PI project, which will have a total installed capacity of 175 MW.

Once these four parks are operational, they will be supply enough clean energy to power around 130,000 Spanish households and will prevent the emission of 430,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to that produced by around 150,000 vehicles. To avoid a similar amount of emissions, around seven million trees would have to be planted.

The 24 nacelles will be assembled at Siemens Gamesa's plant in Ágreda (Soria), the gearboxes will be produced at the plants in Asteasu (Guipúzcoa), Lerma (Burgos) and the city of Burgos, and the electrical components will be produced at the factories in Reinosa (Cantabria), San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) and Benisanó (Valencia). Siemens Gamesa has nine plants in Spain employing 1,200 people, and 4,500 employees in total in the country.

Siemens Gamesa Turbines for Sofia Offshore Wind Power Project

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has been awarded the firm order from RWE for the 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind power project. Sofia represents a giant leap for the company; located 195 km off the UK’s north eastern coast on Dogger Bank in the North Sea, the project will be the first to install the company’s flagship 14 MW Direct Drive offshore wind turbine. At 593 square kilometres, the Sofia project will also cover an area greater than that of the Isle of Man and will utilise the evolutionary technology of the SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine commercially for the first time anywhere in the world. The development brings other milestones; the 100 turbines will be installed furthest from shore of any project yet undertaken by the company and will feature the world’s largest single-cast turbine blade at 108 m long.

The B108 blades being used at Sofia are more than six times longer than the first offshore wind turbine blades ever installed, namely the 16-meter long blades used at Vindeby in Denmark in 1991. The 35-meter water depth, the distance from the UK’s coastline and the sheer scale of the turbine and its components make the stable, proven technology of Siemens Gamesa’s Direct Drive technology, where no gearbox is involved,an obvious choice for the Sofia wind power project. The strong, reliable winds far from shore will enable the completed wind power project to power the equivalent of 1.2 million UK households. Offshore construction works for the Sofia project will start in 2023 with turbine installation set to commence in 2025.

Two further preferred supplier agreements for wind power projects employing the SG 14-222 DD turbine are signed, totalling 2.94 GW: the 300 MW Hai Long offshore wind project in Taiwan and the 2.64 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project in the USA. The enormous machines, with a capacity of up to 15 megawatts with Power Boost, a 222 m rotor diameter and overall height of 252 m, are able to bring utility-scale energy generation with far fewer turbines installed than was possible only a few years ago.

The B108 blades take advantage of the IntegralBlade® technology, as well as the superior Siemens Gamesa PowerEdge™ solution and lightning protection system. Recently produced, the first three B108 blades will be installed on the SG 14-222 DD prototype in Østerild, Denmark later in calendar year 2021.

ENGIE Selects Siemens Gamesa for Wind Farm in Peru

Siemens Gamesa has been selected by ENGIE to together write a new chapter of the energy revolution tackling climate change in Latin America with the installation of 260 MW of clean energy for Peru at the Punta Lomitas project in the southern region of Ica. This is ENGIE Energia Peru’s first wind farm in the country. To date, the Andean nation has an installed capacity of 400 MW of wind power over 8 operating parks and aims to triple its clean power generation by 2030. For its part, Siemens Gamesa has 164 MW of installed capacity in Peru.

Punta Lomitas will be equipped with 50 units of the SG 5.0-145 onshore turbine, and it is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2023. The turbines will operate at between 5 MW to 5.2 MW. The order includes a long-term operation and maintenance contract, placing Siemens Gamesa in a privileged position servicing 5 of Peru’s wind farms.

Globally ENGIE has a total of 10 GW wind power installed capacity, of which 20 percent has been carried out with Siemens Gamesa technology.

Peru’s wind power history began in 1996 with pilot installations, with the first big projects developed in 2006. The Peruvian government has pledged to reach 15 percent of clean power generation by 2030.
