Siemens to Build Low Emission Power Supply in Italy

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
15 Sep, 2022, 5:30 am

Siemens Energy will build a state-of-the-art combined cycle power plant on a turnkey basis in Ostiglia in Lombardy. The plant will make a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in Italy, thanks to its high efficiency and low CO2 emissions compared with coal- or older gas-fired power plants. It will also be capable of reliably balancing the fluctuating feed-in from renewables like wind and solar power plants to the grid. The project is being executed in a consortium with Italian engineering, procurement, and construction companies Fata and Demont. The utility EP Produzione is owner and operator of the plant.

The power plant will use the HL-class gas turbine technology from Siemens Energy. Thanks to its state-of-the-art efficiency, this technology enables maximum utilization of natural gas and a high degree of flexibility in operation. The unit is designed to be fired with up to 30 percent hydrogen in addition to natural gas in the future. The installed electrical output will be 880 megawatts, which is sufficient to supply more than half a million Italian households with electricity. Completion is scheduled for spring 2025.

Thanks to an air-cooled condenser, it’s not necessary to draw water from the nearby River Po to cool the power plant. This is a significant benefit for the local environment and an important factor for the reliable operation of the plant. In addition to the ACC, state of the art nitrogen oxide emission levels (below 10 mg/Nm3), and a broad, flexible operating range accompanied by minimized fuel consumption ensure that the new power plant in Ostiglia sets benchmarks with regards to sustainability and environmental protection.

The power plant is designed as a multi-shaft unit with the gas and steam turbines each driving their own generator. Siemens Energy's scope of supply includes an SGT5-9000HL gas turbine, an SGen5-3000W gas turbine generator, an SST5-5000 steam turbine, an SGen5-1200A steam turbine generator, a heat-recovery steam generator, and the T3000 control system. Siemens & Deutsche Bahn Test Hydrogen Train & Fueling Station

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
19 Sep, 2022, 7:12 am

Hydrogen trains are a particularly climate-friendly drive technology since they operate emission-free with green hydrogen and emit only water vapor. Siemens Mobility and Deutsche Bahn presented the H2goesRail project to the public in November 2020. In addition to the refueling and commissioning tests conducted over recent months, DB employees have been trained to operate the system when it enters service. The Mireo Plus H developed for the H2goesRail project has a range of up to 800 kilometers, is as powerful as its electric multiple-unit counterpart, has 1.7 MW of traction power providing up to 1.1 meters per second acceleration, and a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour.

One key factor needed to make hydrogen technology competitive with diesel fuel in daily operation is a fast refueling process. To provide this, DB has developed a new method that, for the first time, enables a hydrogen train to be refueled as fast as a diesel-powered train. This is especially important considering the closely timed scheduling of DB’s regional passenger service. Hydrogen for the trains will be produced in Tübingen by DB Energy with green electricity taken directly from the overhead power line.

On the route between Tübingen and Pforzheim, for example, switching from diesel to the H2goesRail project train will save around 330 tons of CO2 emissions a year. In general, and depending on the route, the Mireo Plus H can save 520 tons of emissions per year (calculated on a total mileage of 200,000 kilometers). The Mireo Plus H will begin test runs in Baden-Württemberg in 2023. As of 2024, it will be underway in regular passenger service for the H2goesRail project, operating between Tübingen, Horb and Pforzheim and replacing a diesel railcar currently in use on that route.

The joint funding project is officially called “H2goesRail”. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport BMDV is funding the project with over EUR 13 million through the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology NIP 2. NIP 2 is coordinated by NOW (National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology) GmbH and is being implemented by project lead Jülich. For the project’s one-year trial operation, Siemens has developed a two-car regional train using a next-generation hydrogen drive system. The train operates with two propulsion systems, each consisting of a fuel cell and a lithium-ion battery. The Mireo Plus H is as powerful as an electric multiple-unit train and has a range of up to 800 kilometers – depending on operating conditions such as season or route. A three-car variant has a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. Thanks to its reduced maintenance and repair costs, the train has low lifecycle costs. The Mireo Plus H has a top speed of 160 kilometers an hour.

DB has developed, tested and optimized the related hydrogen infrastructure. Hydrogen is produced by electrolysis at the DB maintenance depot in Tübingen using green electricity taken directly from the overhead power line. In the electrolyzer, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. After being compressed, the hydrogen is kept in a mobile storage unit. Prior to the refueling procedure, the green fuel is processed and cooled. The mobile system will enable DB to conduct further test projects on non-electrified rail routes. he train is refueled with hydrogen in an innovative procedure that, for the first time, takes no longer than tanking a diesel train. This is an especially important factor considering that DB’s commuter and regional trains operate on closely timed schedules. Thanks to this fast refueling process, hydrogen technology will be economically competitive with the diesel fuel currently in use.

Siemens Commissions Wunsiedel Hydrogen in Germany

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
23 Sep, 2022, 7:01 am

Germany’s largest green hydrogen generation plant at Wunsiedel in Upper Franconia has been commissioned by Siemens. Up to 1,350 tonnes of green hydrogen can now be generated annually from renewable solar and wind power in the Wunsiedel Energy Park. Hydrogen is generated by an electrolyzer, with a total capacity of 8.75 megawatts, from Siemens Energy’s latest and most powerful product line. The “Silyzer 300” is based on proton exchange membrane technology, which is optimally suited for operation with renewable energies.

The hydrogen will be used primarily in the region’s industrial and commercial enterprises, but also in road transport. With this amount of hydrogen, 400 40-ton hydrogen-powered trucks could, assuming a regional distance of 150 kilometers per day, drive for an entire year without emitting any CO2. By using the hydrogen generated in Wunsiedel and the related replacement of fossil fuels, annual CO2 emissions can be cut by up to 13,500 tons.

The hydrogen will be distributed by truck trailers on a decentralized basis to end customers mainly within a radius of around 150 to 200 kilometers (Northern Bavaria, Thuringia, Southern Saxony and Western Bohemia). In addition, following the construction of an H2 filling station at the Wunsiedel Energy Park, scheduled for completion in 2023, the regional fleet of commercial vehicles can be decarbonized.

As general contractor, Siemens Smart Infrastructure was responsible for the construction of the hydrogen plant and the creation of an intelligently monitored and controlled power grid.

Siemens Energy to Use HVDC Grid for Celtic Interconnector

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
8 Dec, 2022, 4:30 am

Siemens Energy will deliver the high-voltage direct current transmission technology for the Celtic Interconnector, an electricity highway between France and Ireland. It will be the first connection between the Irish grid and Continental Europe. The project will strengthen the security of electricity supply in both countries and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the European electricity grid. The order value for Siemens Energy is in the mid three-digit million-euro range. The interconnector is jointly developed by EirGrid, the electricity transmission system operator in Ireland, and its French counterpart, RTE.

Celtic Interconnector has a total length of 575 kilometers, of which 500 kilometers of cables will run through the Celtic Sea. Over such long distances, electricity can only be economically transported in the form of direct current.

Siemens Energy is therefore building two converter stations at the end points of the interconnector – one near Knockraha, located in the County Cork region of Ireland, the other one near La Martyre in France. Both can convert alternating current, as fed into the stations from the respective national grid, into direct current for transportation, and vice versa. In this way, the converter stations enable the bidirectional exchange of up to 700 megawatts of electricity.

This corresponds to the supply of around 450,000 households. In the future, Ireland will be able to import French electricity to secure base load in the grid or – after implementation of its ambitious wind energy plans - send excess renewable energy to Europe. Energization of Celtic Interconnector is scheduled for 2026.
