August Newsletter
A Message From Our Chairman, Tim Yeo

This month’s newsletter includes my statement for the Annual General Meeting which took place last Thursday which can be viewed in the link below.
Regarding concerns for the completion date of the first plant, as it is delivered we will gradually commission stages of the operation, so putting the plant gradually into full test and subsequently full operation. One of the first such tests will be the TCC and syngas production. This will be earlier on our delivery schedule and will give all involved great confidence that a high quality and consistent syngas product, is able to be produced. Following this we will produce power, and finally hydrogen before we declare that we are complete and operational. It is this final and complete stage that 2023 refers to.
As soon as our contractor is engaged and prepared, we will be able to provide investors with target dates for our phased operational stages.
Thank you for signing up to our monthly newsletter as we aim to provide flexible, innovative, solutions to global pollution by recycling plastic and waste into valuable clean energy products that improve our environment for future generations.
First and foremost we remain focused on the project that remains our top priority – building our first commercial scale plant at Protos. Success with this project will open a worldwide market for our clean technology.
This project is being undertaken by Protos Plastics to Hydrogen N0. 1 Limited, the special purpose vehicle (SPV) set up for this purpose. Following discussions with Peel NRE about funding earlier this year Powerhouse agreed to provide the SPV with a short-term loan facility of £3.8 million which was announced on 12 May 2021.
This facility ensures that long-lead items of equipment will be available timeously to progress the plant. We have already committed to securing orders for some specialist materials so meaning that we can secure a short overall project delivery period from commencement to completion. The loan facility is also enabling early preparatory work to proceed on site.
Since announcing this facility we have continued to work very closely with Peel with the aim of reaching financial close on the SPV by 31 October 2021.
In addition, the appointment of Ian Crockford to run the SPV has greatly strengthened the management team working on the project. Ian is overseeing the procurement and risk management to ensure that there is a robust contracting position for this first of a kind (FOAK) project.
FOAK projects, are by their nature, subject to technology risk which can make it hard to forecast a completion date until an experienced contractor is committed. We are nearing the appointment of a contractor and are therefore confident that the steps we have taken in the last few months are consistent with a completion date during 2023. We will update shareholders regularly on anticipated milestone dates.
Turning to other subjects I am pleased that Peel is progressing land use planning matters for the second DMG® plant which will be built in Glasgow at the Rothesay Dock on the north bank of the River Clyde, not far from where COP26 will take place in November. The location of a hydrogen re-fuelling station at this site is a reminder of the potential for DMG® plants to play an important role in supplying clean transport fuels in the UK and abroad, thereby delivering environmental benefits in the form of lower CO2 emissions and improved air quality.
The search for our new CEO is progressing well with the help of Egon Zehnder. Myles Kitcher and I are starting to interview candidates next month.
We continue to strengthen our management team. In September a new Business Development Executive will join us to help deal with the increasing number of inquiries we receive from different parts of the world.
We also continue to support Hydrogen Utopia International in their deployment of DMG® technology in Poland, Greece and Hungary.
The board is confident about the outlook for Powerhouse and we look forward to updating shareholders later this year when we publish our half year results at the end of September.”

Comment from Powerhouse Energy Group on the Government’s published Hydrogen Strategy
17th Aug 2021

Powerhouse Energy welcome the Government’s Hydrogen Strategy, recognising hydrogen as a key pillar in reaching net zero.

“We welcome the Government’s Hydrogen Strategy, published today, recognising hydrogen as a key pillar in reaching net zero. We particularly welcome the twin track approach from Government with support of low carbon hydrogen production, which is important if we are to significantly ramp up production quickly. British, low carbon technology such as Powerhouse’s can help increase hydrogen production and importantly is available today. Powerhouse technology can help the transport sector reduce carbon emissions saving up to 125% of CO2 when compared to carbon emissions from diesel, helping accelerate the clean energy transition and improve the air we breathe.

It is important the UK Government anticipates the demand and supports investment in local production and consumption infrastructure. The strategy acknowledges the lack of existing hydrogen infrastructure in terms of refuelling stations and this must be addressed if we are to see an effective uptake in hydrogen as a transport fuel. We welcome the need for policy to be put in place which will support existing infrastructure. Our partner, Peel NRE, part of Peel L&P, is kickstarting this infrastructure having recently announced plans to develop a hydrogen refuelling station at Protos, where Powerhouse technology will be first used commercially, turning plastic into clean energy. There are also ambitions for a refuelling station at a planned plastic to hydrogen facility in North Clyde, near Glasgow.

We are pleased Government has recognised new export opportunities for British hydrogen technologies and we urge ministers to maximise this, championing home grown technologies such as Powerhouse Energy’s that can help accelerate fuel switching and improve our environment for future generations across the world.

We believe the Government should adopt a cross departmental approach including BEIS, Defra and DFT. Indeed the creation of an Office for Hydrogen would help ensure a world-leading hydrogen economy here in the UK.

We look forward to collaborating with Government to develop a UK standard for low carbon hydrogen and input into a review to support the development of the necessary network and storage infrastructure of the hydrogen sector.”

Plans for plastic to hydrogen facility in Glasgow submitted
Peel NRE – part of Peel L&P – has submitted a planning application to West Dunbartonshire Council for the UK’s second waste plastic to hydrogen facility.

Based at Rothesay Dock on the north bank of the River Clyde the £20m facility will take non-recyclable plastics, destined for landfill, incineration or export overseas, and use them to create a local source of sustainable hydrogen. The hydrogen will be used as a clean fuel for buses, cars and HGVs, with plans for a linked hydrogen refuelling station on the site.

The 13,500 tonne facility will use pioneering technology developed by Powerhouse Energy Group plc (AIM: PHE), after plans for a similar facility at Peel NRE’s Protos site in Cheshire were approved in 2019.

Richard Barker, Development Director at Peel NRE, said: “We’re a long way from removing all plastic from society and, while the priority should be on reducing, reusing and recycling what we can, there will still be some end of life plastics that need managing. The Powerhouse technology not only enables us to deal with this material on our shores, it also produces hydrogen which can be used as a clean vehicle fuel, helping to reduce carbon emissions associated with diesel fuel and improve local air quality. As we head towards COP26 in Glasgow, this is a great example of how the UK is innovating in net zero and delivering pioneering technologies that can be used the world over.”

Tim Yeo, Chairman of Powerhouse Energy Group, said: “We welcome the submission of the planning application for a second site for our recycling technology which will transform plastics and waste into clean energy. We hope this pioneering technology will play an important role in supporting the objective of both Holyrood and Westminster to make hydrogen a key element of Scotland’s decarbonisation strategy. A planned hydrogen refuelling station at this site will help bolster the region’s infrastructure and help accelerate the clean energy transition, improving our environment for future generations in the region”.

Zero Waste Scotland estimates that around 500,000 tonnes of waste plastic are produced in Scotland every year, with research undertaken by Anthesis, on behalf of Peel NRE, showing that around 300,000 tonnes are within the central belt of Scotland.

A planning application for the facility has been submitted to West Dunbartonshire Council following engagement with local stakeholders. A decision is expected in the Autumn. If approved, construction will take around 15 months to complete.

Peel NRE has signed a collaboration agreement with Powerhouse Energy Group to develop 11 waste plastic to hydrogen facilities across the UK over the next few years, with the option of exclusive rights for a total of 70 facilities.

Powerhouse Energy Group Plc (LON stock symbol PHE), has announced that it has signed a binding exclusivity agreement for its sustainable hydrogen energy technology in Greece, Poland and Hungary.

The company uses non-recyclable waste to produce H2 primarily intended for transport fuel.

As previously reported on Hydrogen Fuel News, Powerhouse uses non-recyclable plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfills and converts it into sustainable hydrogen fuel. The new agreement is with Hydrogen Utopia International Plc (HUI), and it has provided the company with an exclusive non-transferable license for its technology application in the three countries.

With this agreement, Powerhouse intends to license developers for delivering facilities that will provide environmentally friendly energy products into the future. The company has already secured its first licensee, Peel NRE, a part of Peel L&P. That company will be rolling out the H2 production tech across UK sites.

The sustainable hydrogen technology agreement between Powerhouse and HUI brings the tech to Europe.

The new agreement underscores the commitment of both Powerhouse and HUI for accelerating the transition to cleaner sources of energy in Europe as well as worldwide. The corporate mission at HUI includes the creation of a project pipeline for the plastic waste to energy technology in Europe by way of state funding and partnerships, as well as from and with regional authorities and the private sector. This will specifically include certain targeted regions for facilitating the tech’s deployment.Sustainable hydrogen - waste-to-energy process - Powerhouse Energy Offical YouTube

Press Release - 5/9/21
Hydrogen Utopia International & Linde

to enter an agreement to deploy Powerhouse Energy Group (LSE:PHE) DMG plastic waste-to-hydrogen system in Europe.

Hydrogen Utopia International PLC (HUI) is pleased to announce that Linde has finalised technical feasibility evaluation to deploy the syngas cleanup and hydrogen extraction of Powerhouse Energy DMG® technology in Poland.

Now HUI and Linde are in their final stage of signing a mutual contract for the syngas cleanup.

HUI have so far acquired exclusive rights to the Powerhouse DMG system in Poland, Hungary and Greece.

The feasibility study envisaged a plant to be jointly developed by Linde, HUI and Powerhouse Energy (PHE), located in Konin in Central Poland. The plan is to convert 40 tonnes of plastic waste into 58 MWh of renewable electricity and clean hydrogen per day. Once the plant is realised, the hydrogen will be used locally as a fuel for city buses and other heavy-duty vehicles, as well as for passenger cars. The DMG® system will also be used to provide heat to the citizens of Konin thanks to the Central Heating System.

The project, when completed, will contain ten DMG® units in one location. The site is one that Hydrogen Utopia International Ltd has received legal access to commence planning applications, necessary permits and EIA, and for this purpose, HUI has engaged SWECO to commence the process.

The project is subject to funding approval by the Just Transition Fund which will be matched by funds from the Polish Government under the JUST Transition fund terms of Government matching funds.

Hydrogen is increasingly seen as an essential component in the energy transition to clean energy away from fossil fuels. It is the best available technology for heavy-duty and long range transport, as well as for decarbonising key industries including cement and steel production and potentially domestic heating.

Polish Hydrogen Strategy 2030, which is being currently implemented, sets out six key targets and forty steps that must be taken to achieve European Union guidelines. The three sectors where hydrogen will be needed are energy, transport and industry. Poland is looking for new energy solutions in order to reduce its dependency on coal and make a swift transition towards sustainable energy.

Over the course of 2019, the city of Konin prepared a new energy transition strategy for the city, which includes both waste-to-energy initiatives as well as using hydrogen as a fuel for local transport and municipal companies. The city is currently engaged, together with other relevant regional stakeholders in preparing the territorial just transition plan for the Eastern Wielkopolska region.

This transition would not be possible without a close collaboration between HUI and

Powerhouse Energy PLC - a UK based company which is a leading provider of onsite clean energy systems and long-term energy off-take services. Powerhouse Energy uses both traditional and renewable forms of fuel to generate both electric and thermal energy in an economically viable and environmentally responsible manner. Powerhouse holds the rights to the Distributed Modular Gasification (DMG®) technology.

"We are proud to have Linde , who are proven hydrogen experts, on board of this project. In the case of DMG deployment in Poland, Linde's efficiency will speed up decarbonising my country. Thanks to our Powerhouse Energy DMG technology, we also aim to offer a valid solution to a massive plastic waste issue which we are facing at the moment in Poland," says Aleksandra Binkowska, CEO of HUI.

“We at Linde are very happy to contribute our gas-cleaning and hydrogen technologies to this forward-looking project. Producing hydrogen from plastic waste will help to solve an environmental problem and at the same time foster decentralized hydrogen utilization,” says Harald Ranke, Managing Director at Selas-Linde.

Comment regarding Press Speculation

Powerhouse Energy Group plc (AIM: PHE), the UK technology company commercialising hydrogen production from waste plastic, has noted the comments in the UK press at the weekend in relation to a potential agreement between DMG® licensee Hydrogen Utopia International PLC (“HUI”) and Linde.

Linde has finalised a technical feasibility evaluation to deploy the syngas clean-up and hydrogen extraction of Powerhouse Energy DMG® technology. HUI and Linde are in discussions to enter into an agreement to develop a plant in Konin, Poland which would use Powerhouse’s technology. There can be no guarantee such an agreement would be finalised and any agreement regarding building a facility would be subject to material conditions including financing, permitting and planning permission.

Powerhouse will update the market with any further developments at the appropriate time.

Ik ben ook blijven zitten met een klein plukje aandelen. Spijtig genoeg te hoog ingekocht, maar geloof er wel in op de lange termijn!
