Ik heb van een Turkse tuinfanaat een notenboom (wortelstek) gekregen. Laatst sprak ik zijn zoon, die zich met verbazing afvroeg, of ik zijn vader had verstaan. Mijn antwoord was simpel, echte tuiniers begrijpen elkaar altijd.

Tideway breakthrough links all three tunnel sections

Thames Tideway tunnellers have achieved a significant milestone linking up all three sections of the super sewer project for the first time.

West main tunnel connection breaks into the Central section

The key tunnel link was achieved at the Carnwath Road Riverside site in Fulham with the breakthrough of the West main tunnel connection into the Central section.

A special 75m connection tunnel has been constructed to join these two sections. Originally the plan was for TBM Millicent to break through into the shaft at Carnwath Road.

But this was deemed to be too disruptive to the TBM Rachel drive that the decision was taken to turn and bury TBM Millicent before the final shaft and dig the final connecting section.

The final connection between the sprayed concrete lined tunnel and the segmental tunnel involved the West section team carefully breaking out the precast tunnel segments and forming an enlargement around the segmental interface ring.

Prior to the works starting the team carried out a full scale trial of the connection to ensure that the they could achieve the quality required.

Works on the connection tunnel started in January this year and have now achieved the breakthrough.

Now 20km of the 25-km ‘super sewer’ have been constructed with secondary lining underway.

TBM Selina is tunnelling the final section from Chambers Wharf in Bermondsey to Abbey Mills Pumping Station.

Thames Water is the UK's largest water and wastewater services company. Every day, it supplies around 2.6 million litres of tap water to nine million customers across London and the Thames Valley. It also removes and treats more than four billion litres of sewage for 15 million customers.

Valt wel mee, even een snelle vertaling: 'Ze geven eerst alleen bruto cijfers, want sowieso moeten ze aan het eind van het jaar ook netto cijfers geven'.

Zo is het, waar een wil is, is ook vaak een weg. Maar eerlijk gezegd valt dit niet in de categorie 'moeilijk te begrijpen', helemaal niet op een BAM-forum.

het maakt duidelijk dat ons taaltje een onnavolgbaar gedrocht is voor niet hier geborenen. Met 250k woorden en waarvan er veel zijn die hetzelfde geschreven worden maar iets anders betekenen, een stroom aan idioom en spreekwoorden, los van dialecten of uitspraken, valt een buitenstaander al snel door de mand.
Denk maar eens aan 'Scheveningen"...

Er zijn heel wat woorden die niet naar een andere taal zijn te vertalen. Denk ook maar eens aan 'gezellig', zoals wij dat bedoelen.
