VS arresteren huurmoordenaars die Iraanse journalist wilden doden
NEW YORK (ANP/RTR) - In de Verenigde Staten is een moordaanslag op een Iraans-Amerikaanse journaliste verijdeld. Volgens justitieminister Merrick Garland zijn drie huurmoordenaars opgepakt. Twee van hen horen bij een Oost-Europese criminele organisatie die banden heeft met Iran.
Het Iraanse regime zou de gearresteerde mannen hebben ingehuurd om Masih Alinejad in New York om te leggen. Zij staat bekend om haar kritiek op het Iraanse regeringsbeleid. Alinejad heeft onder meer kritiek gehad op mensenrechtenschendingen, corruptie en strenge kledingvoorschriften voor vrouwen in het land. Ze vluchtte in 2009 uit Iran.
In 2021 werden in de VS al eens vier Iraniërs gepakt omdat ze Alinejad wilden ontvoeren. Toen zou het doel volgens de Amerikaanse aanklagers zijn geweest om haar naar Iran te brengen. Een van de mannen die nu als huurmoordenaar wordt vervolgd werd vorig jaar al opgepakt omdat hij met een geweer bij het huis van Alinejad rondliep.
