2 Econic Vehicles with Special Body Keep Roads Safe in Cardiff

Transport for Wales was looking for two special vehicles to assure traffic safety. The catalogue of requirements was extensive and very precise and the search ended with the procurement of a vehicle from Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks: the Econic. Two new special trucks from Mercedes-Benz were procured for use as so-called "impact protection vehicles". They are based on an 18-tonne Econic chassis which impresses thanks to its low entry. Acklea, a specialist in traffic management vehicles, equipped the vehicles with specially designed add-on parts made of galvanised steel and aluminium not to mention fitting an all-round LED signalling system and "Traffix Scorpion" damping elements crash cushions. The damping elements are designed to withstand the impact of vehicles travelling at speeds of up to 100 km/h. The curved design of the beams deflects a side impact away from the vehicle.

The fully-glazed folding door on the co-driver side allows drivers to make eye contact with cyclists and other road users at junctions and in unclear traffic situations. Direct visual contact is an extremely important safety feature for road users. The Econic vehicles are 1830 L models and they are both are equipped with a 220 kW (299 hp) 7.7-litre six-cylinder in-line engine and six-speed Allison automatic transmission in addition to air suspension.

Mercedes-Benz Bus for Turbine Potsdam Football Club

As one of the most successful women's football teams in Germany and Europe, Turbine Potsdam also plays at Bundesliga level when it comes to their team bus. An attractive and well-equipped Mercedes-Benz Tourismo from sponsoring partner Regiobus Potsdam Mittelmark will soon be available to take the players and trainer team to fixtures.

The new Tourismo is already the third team vehicle from Mercedes-Benz to be used for transporting the team. The predecessor was a Travego and diligently served the team from 2017 to 2021, taking them around Germany and Europe to more than 100 sporting events. The fact that the new team member also bears the three-pointed star speaks for itself. The approximately 13-metre-long, three-axle Tourismo is equipped with 46 luxurious seats with 4-star seat spacing and upholstery in team colours. This ensures that each player can enjoy a double seat to themselves. In the front-left area, there is also a club table with face-to-face seating and a HDMI interface. From here, the trainer team can make strategic or analytic presentations on the screens, as well as enabling individual discussions to take place in a relaxed atmosphere. Each seat row is equipped with two USB charging stations, folding tables and footrests. A galley, a toilet and a comprehensive Multimedia Package with three 19-inch LCD screens and Wi-Fi router round off the Comfort Package of the bus of the Bundesliga team.

But it isn't just the comfort and convenience attributes which make the Tourismo a great team bus. Another important aspect of the Tourismo which makes it such a good touring coach for travelling around Europe is its excellent safety concept. In addition to the already standard safety features, Regiobus Potsdam Mittelmark also had the vehicle equipped with adaptive cruise control (ART), Lane Assist (SPA), Sideguard Assist, tyre pressure monitoring (TPM), a fire extinguishing system, Attention Assist for the driver and a reversing camera. To put it briefly: the Tourismo is equipped with almost all of the safety systems currently available for Mercedes-Benz buses and will thus be well up to the challenge of representing the team.

Daimler, BASF, Fairphone & Volkswagen for Lithium Mining in Chile

Several companies have initiated a “Responsible Lithium Partnership” aiming to work towards responsible natural resource management, including lithium, in Chile’s Salar de Atacama. This cross-industry partnership is funded at its inception by Daimler AG, BASF, Fairphone, and Volkswagen Group. The partnership intends to foster a dialogue among local stakeholders, generating and synthesizing scientific facts and seeking solutions in a participatory manner. The platform aims to facilitate a common understanding of the status quo and jointly develop a shared vision for the future of the Salar de Atacama watershed. In addition, it intends the co-development of a joint action plan to improve long-term integrated natural resource management and undertake the first implementing steps. Another aim is to synthesize and verify available technical data, improve on it if necessary, and increase accessibility. The Responsible Lithium Partnership will commence in spring 2021, with a planned duration of 2.5 years. It does not intend to facilitate the sourcing of lithium nor the purchase or selling of any raw mineral.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, commissioned by the companies, will coordinate the partnership seeking to find common ground by building a multi-stakeholder platform among all relevant actors in the Salar watershed - ranging from civil society groups including indigenous communities, government institutions, mining companies and beyond.

The financing companies Daimler AG, BASF, Fairphone, and Volkswagen Group are aware of their responsibility along the entire supply chain, including their human rights due diligence for raw material sourcing and production. They have, therefore, initiated the “Responsible Lithium Partnership” to promote sustainable development, contribute to the reduction of potential negative impacts and strengthen the protection of human rights.

Due to the expansion of e-mobility and digitization, the demand for lithium as key material in batteries is expected to grow in the next years. The World’s largest lithium reserves and large parts of the total production are located in the Salar de Atacama. The region’s ecosystem is fragile and there is lack of consensus regarding the impacts and risks of lithium mining and other economic activity in the region. Potential risks derived from water and brine table shifts could potentially harm the ecosystems and affect local livelihoods. Addressing such water-related risks effectively requires the collaboration of stakeholders.

Mercedes Benz to Delivers 100 Citaro Hybrid Buses to Atac

Rome based transport company Atac will receive 100 Mercedes-Benz Citaro hybrid buses. The city buses are to be delivered in three lots between June and the autumn of this year. They are part of an ambitious investment programme to modernise the bus fleet of the transport company in Italy's capital. One of the company's goals is to significantly reduce pollutant emissions.

The new vehicles are painted amaranth red and have a band that runs around the upper section of the bus bearing the wording "+ Bus x Rom + Bus x Rom" – which stands for "more buses for Rome". The solo buses for Atac are equipped with two passenger doors and are fully air-conditioned. A protective glass driver's cab door prevents close contact between the passengers and driver which protects the driver from infections. Both the air conditioning system and the air conditioner housing are fitted with anti-viral active filters. A CCTV system provides for safety onboard and a counting system records the number of passengers. The vehicles are also equipped with GPS surveillance and a telematics system assists fleet management.

When compared with conventional city buses with a combustion engine, the Citaro hybrid buses reduce fuel consumption and in turn emissions by up to 8.5 percent. A highly-efficient and compact hybrid module assists the efficient, low-emissions diesel engine. An electric motor converts energy into electricity when the vehicle is coasting or braking. It is stored in high-performance capacitors, so-called supercaps. The electric motor assists the combustion engine when the bus pulls away. The Citaro hybrid is also equipped with intelligent eco steering, an electrohydraulic steering system. It operates in a need-optimised way and likewise helps reduce fuel consumption in local city transport.

Ten-year service contract; Daimler Buses takes care of maintenance in the customer's workshop.

Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G Buses for HOCHBAHN & VHH

Mercedes-Benz gas handed over two fully electric eCitaro G urban buses to Hamburger Hochbahn AG HOCHBAHN and Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH VHH. Both buses are part of considerable large orders. Mercedes-Benz is currently in the process of supplying 37 eCitaro (20 already delivered) to Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH (VHH) and 34 eCitaro to Hamburger Hochbahn AG. Both orders include rigid and articulated buses, and both are follow-up orders after extensive practical testing with numerous eCitaro buses in daily operations around Hamburg.

Long-lasting: innovative solid-state batteries

The Mercedes-Benz eCitaro is the first and only electric bus to be developed and produced in Germany. An outstanding feature of the two eCitaro G vehicles now being delivered is their innovative solid-state batteries. Both have seven battery packs, each with an energy content of 441 kWh, serving as the basis for a practically oriented range even under demanding conditions. The batteries are charged by a plug connection in the depot. With the solid-state battery technology, Mercedes-Benz and the two transport companies are taking the lead in terms of technology, not only in the bus segment but also worldwide in automotive engineering. Solid-state batteries are characterised, among other things, by a very high energy density and a long service life. Furthermore, this battery technology does not require the use of cobalt.

In addition to their battery technology, the articulated buses of the two companies have numerous other features in common. The four doors of the 18.13-metre low-floor buses ensure convenient and rapid passenger changes at bus stops. The seating arrangement is identical, as is the provision of no less than three special use areas for prams and wheelchairs. The articulated buses are equipped with various infotainment systems with monitors in the front and rear of the bus as well as numerous dual USB sockets for charging mobile devices. The doors of the driver’s cabs are each equipped with partition screens across the entire door width to prevent infection of driving personnel.

Both transport companies also added their own personal touches. First of all, this concerns the paintwork in the respective company colours, as well as individual seat covers, handrails and different floorings in homely wood decor. The VHH buses will have extended glass surfaces on the left and right side walls. Plus, the electrically powered urban buses at VHH each bear a name beginning with the letter “E”. The E is a reference to the VHH brand “elexity”, under which the company combines all aspects of e-mobility. Among other things, the HHA buses feature a door-closing warning system with a flashing red LED light strip and friendly ambient lighting in the passenger compartment.

Hamburger Hochbahn AG operates buses and trams in Hamburg. It uses around 1000 buses to serve its 113 lines and approximately 1400 stops. These buses carry around 214 million passengers a year. Since last year, the company has only ordered locally emission-free urban buses.

Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH operates 155 lines in the Hamburg metropolitan region. The fleet comprises almost 700 buses. VHH carries more than 100 million passenger annually. Since 2020, VHH has procured only locally emission-free buses for use in Hamburg’s urban area.

Daimler Trucks FUSO Plant on CO2 Neutral Track

The Tramagal plant in Portugal, Daimler Trucks’ central production location for FUSO in Europe, announced that its truck-manufacturing infrastructure is setting the course for green truck production by achieving carbon neutrality in 2022. In 2019, Daimler Truck AG announced that all European Daimler Trucks & Buses plants aim to be CO2-neutral by the year 2022. In line with this ambition, the Tramagal plant intends to achieve these climate-friendly production targets through reduced energy consumption, green energy supply and on-site production of green energy through solar panels.

In recent years, the Tramagal plant was able to progressively reduce CO2 emissions and is expecting a further 50% cut in 2021 compared to the previous year before achieving CO2-neutral production in 2022. To achieve that milestone, the plant will reinforce the use of renewable energy sources and adopt process modifications. Those measures include contracting green electricity, increasing on-site solar power production and switching to self-consumption. The entire internal logistics and warehouse fleet is being converted to electric vehicles. The plant will also be exploring the possibilities of green hydrogen production with the support of solar panels, to progressively replace natural gas consumption.

Located around 150 kilometers north-east of Lisbon, the Tramagal plant produces the international light-duty best-seller FUSO Canter and its all-electric sibling the FUSO eCanter. Production of the FUSO Canter started in 1980, and since then more than 230,000 FUSO trucks have been produced in Portugal.

World's First Diesel Truck from Benz & Daimler in 1923

In 1923 Benz & Cie presented the first diesel truck to the world. The five-tonne vehicle was driven by a four-cylinder diesel OB 2 engine with an output of 33 kW (45 hp) at 1000 rpm. When compared with a petrol-driven truck of the same design, the efficiency of the diesel truck was immediately impressive: compared with the petrol engine, the diesel engine achieved fuel savings of 86 percent. Work on the new truck engine began in 1922. And in the September of that year the first major assembly was put on the test stand. Initially ten OB 2 engines were built.

First testdrives with the Benz Diesel Truck were done in the Northern Black Forest in September 1923. The first test drive was carried out in the challenging, hilly area around Gaggenau on 10 September 1923. The engineer's report assessed the vehicle as follows: "The favourable consumption is particularly impressive: supplied with brown coal tar oil, the OB 2 requires around 25% less than a petrol engine with the same power. The sensationally low fuel costs were due to the fact that the tar oil was cheaper than the petrol”

The Benz engineers chose the chassis on the Benz 5 K 3 truck which was designed for a payload of five tonnes. During the test drives, the OB 2 diesel engine proved itself to such an extent that on 14 April 1923 it was decided that the engine would go into series production. The prechamber OB 2 diesel engine was capable of an output of 37 kW (50 hp) at 1000 rpm.

In 1911 Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft began development of a compact diesel engine for commercial and agricultural purposes. While Benz & Cie. were developing the diesel truck, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft in Berlin-Marienfelde was building an air-injection diesel engine to be fitted in a truck which boasted almost the same power. The finished product was a four-cylinder engine with an output of 29 kW (40 hp) at 1000 rpm. The engine proved its road capability during a series of test drives in 1923. The long-distance drive between the two DMG plants was particularly spectacular at the time: from 20 to 30 September 1923 a Daimler diesel truck drove from Berlin to Stuttgart and back. Following these tests which drew a great deal of publicity due to the then enormous distances, the first Daimler 5C commercial diesel vehicles produced in Marienfelde, a truck, a three-sided tipper and a bus were presented at the beginning of October 1923 at the Berlin automobile exhibition.

Following the merger of Benz & Cie and DMG in 1926, Benz's prechamber principle prevailed against the air-injection diesel engine. The first jointly developed prechamber diesel engine was the six-cylinder OM 5 engine from 1927 (55 kW/75 hp with a displacement of 8.6 litres). The abbreviation OM for diesel engines comes from "oil engine" and is still used today by Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz eCitaro Bus will soon be in Poland

Daimler Buses has received its first order for fully electric city buses in Poland. The planned order is made up of eight articulated buses and 16 solo buses. They are expected to be delivered this year. The locally emission-free urban buses will be operated in the port city of Gdynia in the Gulf of Gdansk by the Przedsiebiorstwo Komunikacji Autobusowej Sp. Zoo, PKA Gdynia transport company.

The fully electric city buses from Mercedes-Benz are characterized by the latest-generation lithium-ion batteries. They can be rapidly recharged either using a plug connection or a pantograph with a charging output of up to 300 kW. Besides the standard plug-in connection which is available, the eCitaro can also be charged using an additional plug-in connection at the rear of the vehicle. What's more, the buses also feature a pre-conditioning system. With this, the battery and passenger compartment are brought up to the appropriate temperature to ensure that the vehicle is already at the right temperature before it leaves the depot. The greatest possible efficiency is thus guaranteed and the energy consumption optimized.

The city buses are still equipped with the latest driver assistance systems in order to increase safety for driver and passengers alike. Among the most striking of these systems is the automatic braking assistant Preventive Brake Assist and the turning aid Sideguard Assist. The connection of the buses to the Omniplus ON fleet management system ensures that the vehicle condition is continually monitored whilst also showing any recommendations for required servicing work. This helps ensure that the fleet remains operational.

Gdynia is a port city in Poland's Gulf of Gdansk. In the Pomeranian Voivodeship, it forms the Tri-City metropolitan area together with biggest city Gdansk and the smaller town Sopot. Today, Gdynia has around 250,000 inhabitants and is thus the twelfth biggest city in Poland. The transport network in Gdynia includes both buses and trolleybuses. The Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses for Gdynia will be the first electric buses in the entire Tri-City metropolitan region.

5 eCitaro in Operation at Baselland Transport AG

The electric bus era has just begun for the Baselland Transport AG transport company, with five eCitaro. BLT is now starting to operate them on route no. 37. This operation with solo buses is a pilot project. Very soon, eight more eCitaro for BLT will follow. By operating electric buses on the no 37 service route, BLT is taking an important step towards climate neutrality. BLT carefully chose the varied service route because it includes both urban and suburban sections and part of it covers ascending and descending gradients.

Baselland Transport AG, or BLT for short, is a Swiss transport company that links the city of Basel to the surrounding region via bus and train. BLT operates in the cantons of Basel-Land, Basel-Stadt, Solothurn and in France. Last year, the 65 buses used by the company transported about 8.1 million bus passengers.

Equipped with innovative solid-state batteries, charging at the bus depot

BLT chose the eCitaro as a solo bus. An outstanding feature of the fully electric low-entry buses for BLT is equipment with innovative solid-state batteries. The buses are characterised by durability and a very high energy density. The energy supply of the eCitaro for BLT is 441 kWh per bus. As a result of the high capacity of the solid-state batteries, the buses have a wide range. For this reason the eCitaro can operate all day on route no. 37 without having to be recharged en route. The electric buses are charged overnight at Oberwil-Hüslimatt bus depot.

BLT has set itself the aim of producing as high an output as possible with less and less energy consumption. To achieve this, BLT is choosing innovative solutions to raise energy efficiency. For example, on the roofs of the depot there is one of the largest photovoltaic systems in the region. This produces approx. 1.2 million kWh of electricity per year. Since 2012, BLT has drawn only certified electricity from renewable energy sources from Swiss hydro-electric plants.

Daimler Honours Steel Supplier Big River Steel for Sustainability

Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG have honoured the American steel supplier Big River Steel for the exceptionally sustainable production of steel. By using recycled steel scrap and renewable energy, Big River Steel is able to reduce the CO2 emissions for Mercedes-Benz products in steel manufacturing by more than 70% compared to the traditional blast furnace route. In addition, the partner has set up a closed cycle in which the sheet-steel offcuts generated during production are fully recycled. The Big River Steel plant in Osceola, Arkansas, is the first steel production facility to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Steel is a core component in vehicle construction and is very energy-intensive to produce.

Other nominees were:

Pöppelmann – The medium-sized plastics processing company from Germany is working intensively on the development of a sustainable material loop and a 100% post-consumer recyclate that meets high quality standards. In addition, the moulding technique saves 10% weight during production, making plastic more sustainable as a lightweight material.

Sansera – The Indian supplier achieved significant CO2 savings through a partial switch to solar and wind energy. In addition, the company has carried out numerous projects to protect the environment at its site.

Salzgitter AG to Supply Green Steel to Mercedes-Benz AG

German steel maker Salzgitter AG subsidiary Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH will supply green flat steel products with a CO2 footprint reduced by more than 66% to four German plants of Mercedes-Benz AG as early as 2021. The low CO2 steel grades are produced in the Peine electric steelworks in combination with the rolling mills and galvanizing plants in Salzgitter. Mercedes-Benz AG is the first automobile manufacturer to be supplied by Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH with CO2 reduced steel as cold thin sheet and hot-dip galvanized sheet for series production. This results in structural and body parts for various car models, among other things.

Salzgitter AG CEO Mr Gunnar Groebler said “The expansion of our product portfolio to include green flat steel via the new low CO2 production route is an important component of our decarbonization strategy that we are already implementing today. In addition, we will follow the path we have taken towards low CO2 steel production with SALCOS steelmaking consistently. This fundamental transformation enables us to completely replace conventional steel production in defined steps with hydrogen-based processes. In this way, we will achieve a CO2 reduction of around 95% in the target image and thus avoid around 1% of today's German emissions. ”

As the first European steel manufacturer, Salzgitter AG has conformity statements based on the VERIsteel procedure of TÜV SÜD for its new ones get green steel products. The procedure enables the detection of the product-specific CO2 emissions in steel production and accompanies the process of decarbonization. The conformity statements confirm that when the production route is changed from the conventional blast furnace route to the electric steel route, CO2 savings of between 66% and 75% are achieved, depending on the end product delivered.

Together with its steel suppliers, Mercedes-Benz is retooling its supply chain to focus on the prevention and reduction of CO2 emissions rather than compensation. Mercedes-Benz AG took an equity stake in Swedish start-up H2 Green Steel in May 2021 as a way to introduce CO2 frees steel into series production.
