Alcoa profit falls on high energy costs, weak dollar

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Alcoa on Monday kicked off the first earnings season of the year with what will likely become a familiar refrain of falling profit amid poor demand from top industrial customers, surging energy costs and a weak U.S. dollar.
The New York-based aluminum giant handed in a first-quarter profit of $303 million, or 37 cents a share, down from $632 million, or 75 cents a share, in the same period a year ago.

AA) posted income from continuing operations of $361 million, or 44 cents a share. When accounting for the currency impact, Alcoa said profit came to 52 cents a share.
Revenue fell to $7.4 billion, down from $7.9 billion a year earlier due to the sale of its packaging and consumer business.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were looking for a profit, on average, of 48 cents a share on $7.2 billion in sales.
"Upstream margins were squeezed by higher energy costs and a weaker U.S. dollar, but the global market remains tight and prices are near historic highs, primarily driven by demand in Asia, especially China," Chairman and CEO Alain Belda said in a statement.
Alcoa's report is seen as ushering in another rough period for corporate results, with earnings for S&P 500 companies seen declining 10.9% from the year-ago period, according to Wall Street targets. Still, that's an improvement from the showing they made in the fourth quarter when earnings fell 25.1%, the worse quarterly performance since at least 1991. See full story.

Amsterdam (BETTEN FINANCIAL NEWS) - Alcoa heeft over het eerste kwartaal van 2008 een nettowinst behaald van USD 303 miljoen, een ruime halvering ten opzichte van de USD 662 miljoen in dezelfde periode een jaar eerder. Dat heeft de Amerikaanse aluminiumproducent maandagavond na het slot van Wall Street bekendgemaakt. Per aandeel kwam de winst uit op USD 0,37.

De winstdaling is te wijten aan gestegen grondstoffen- en energiekosten. Ook de zwakkere dollar speelde Alcoa parten. Bestuursvoorzitter Alain Belda spreekt van 'uitdagende economische omstandigheden'.

De winst uit voortgezette activiteiten nam af van USD 673 miljoen naar USD 303 miljoen. Per aandeel daalde de winst van USD 0,77 tot USD 0,37. Exclusief bijzondere posten belandde de winst per aandeel uit voortgezette activiteiten op USD 0,44. Daarmee mist Alcoa de gemiddelde analistenverwachting, die op USD 0,50 lag.

De omzet van het bedrijf over het afgelopen kwartaal daalde met 6,7% naar USD 7,38 miljard.

Alcoa is traditioneel het eerste Dow-fonds dat met kwartaalresultaten naar buiten komt. Het bedrijf geeft geen concrete verwachtingen voor 2008.

Alcoa Says Profit Falls 54% as Energy Costs Rise (Update2)

April 7 (Bloomberg) -- Alcoa Inc., the world's third-largest aluminum company, said first-quarter profit tumbled 54 percent because of surging energy costs, a weaker U.S. dollar and lower metals prices.

Net income fell to $303 million, or 37 cents a share, from $662 million, or 75 cents, a year earlier, New York-based Alcoa said today in an e-mailed statement. Excluding some items, profit was 44 cents a share. The company was expected to earn 50 cents, the average estimate of 14 analysts in a Bloomberg survey. Sales fell 6.7 percent to $7.38 billion.

Chief Executive Officer Alain Belda is selling less- profitable units after rising energy expenses eroded profit. Alcoa is seeking to sign long-term electricity contracts and increase the amount of cheaper hydropower it uses to match rivals including Rio Tinto Alcan.
`I think everyone knew that it was going to be a tough quarter, with lower metal prices and the U.S. dollar,'' said Scott Burns, an analyst at Morningstar Inc. in Chicago. ``Spot prices spiked toward the end of the quarter, and I'd expect things to go better for the rest of the year.''

Alcoa fell $1.56, or 4 percent, to $37.44 at 4:01 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Before the results were announced, the shares had gained 2.4 percent this year.

After-tax operating income fell at four of the company's five units. Profit in the primary-metals business fell 39 percent to $307 million. Alcoa said earnings in the alumina business fell 35 percent to $169 million.

Alcoa sold aluminum on average at $2,801 a metric ton during the quarter, down 3.5 percent from a year earlier. Prices have since rebounded after power cuts to smelters in South Africa and China. Aluminum for delivery in three months was trading at $2,998 a ton as of 9:26 p.m. on the London Metal Exchange.

Vraag me af waar die 6/9 maanden vooruitkijkentheorie toe gaat leiden hahaha, analisten schatten dat Alcoa 40% minder winst zou maken !!!!!!! Dat was 7 april Voorbeurs, het bleek 55% minder NAbeurs ....7 april, zit een HELE sesie tussen

En dat is dus Silverlining, duidelijke voortekenen van een KRAK
