Tenesol delivers 750th solar system in ME

Trade Arabia reported that Tenesol, a leading global solar power provider recently acquired by US based SunPower has delivered its 750th off grid solar system to the oil and gas industry in the Middle East.

Since 2004, Tenesol has worked with some of the region’s largest oil and gas operators to provide solar solutions that answer the industry’s need for power in isolated locations.

Mr Jacques Mathan export sales manager at Tenesol said that “Providing sustainable energy solutions for off grid equipment is now a major part of the oil and gas industry. As oil prices rise and climate change continues the need for alternative energy solutions increases. The suitability of solar energy’s capabilities in the oil and gas industry combined with the Middle East’s ideal climate, means this is a fast expanding market.”

Supplying 750 systems to the oil and gas industry in the Middle East means Tenesol has been involved in some of the region’s major oil and gas projects.

Tenesol’s systems are used for a range of activities such as powering security equipment wellhead systems for cathodic protection, monitoring equipment and control systems along pipelines. The individual systems range in size from just 2 KWP to much larger 372 KWP systems.

Tamil Nadu to add 3000 MW solar energy

Mr Natham R Viswanathan minister for non conventional energy development of Tamil Nadu said that Tamil Nadu will soon come out with a new policy on solar power to generate 3,000 MW by 2015-16.

Mr Viswanathan said that "Tamil Nadu proposes to install 3,000 MW by 2015-16, which is more than 33 percent of the Indian target. In order to promote renewable energy effectively so as to achieve the targeted capacity addition, the State is shortly coming out with a Solar Policy," said

Inaugurating RENERGY 2012, an international conference on renewable energy organized by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency, he said the state was rolling out the country's largest rooftop solar power program by powering 300,000 houses and 100,000 street lights through solar power.

Saying that the state has received only 22 MW out of the 1,000 MW capacity under the Phase I of National Solar Mission, he requested the centre to address the inequality by recognising the huge potential for solar power in Tamil Nadu.

According to Viswanathan, the state government will promote small rooftop solar power systems as well as encourage wind-solar hybrid installations and aero generators for meeting captive energy requirement of educational institutions.

He said Tamil Nadu accounts for over 7,500 MW of renewable energy capacity out of the country's total 20,000 MW of installed capacity.

The state leads in wind power accounting for 6,800 MW and the industry's growth is hindered due to lack of evacuation infrastructure.

Viswanathan asked the central government for funds from the Clean Energy Fund to address the infrastructural deficit in the wind energy sector.

Gujarat has 749 GW of renewable energy potential - TERI

Gujarat's overall integrated renewable energy potential is estimated to be around 748.77 GW. A study conducted by TERI, Gujarat's potential for concentrated solar power with water availability stands at 345.71 GW, solar photovoltaic wind hybrid excluding CSP at 240.60 GW, only SPV excluding wind and CSP at 21.36 GW, only wind excluding solar potential at 139.21 GW and biomass at 1.89 GW.

Leena Shrivastava vice chancellor of TERI said that "The overall renewable energy potential in Gujarat is very high, considering if all the identified suitable lands can be made available. For this there is a need to focus on developing guidelines and policy for prioritisation of the land utilization, which enables easy and early clearance of lands for the renewable energy projects development.”

On Friday, former Union Minister for Power Suresh Prabhu unveiled report 'Integrated Renewable Energy Resource Atlas for Gujarat', which is prepared by TERI and Sustainable Energy Foundation. Besides Shrivastava and Prabhu, Guajrat's energy and petrochemicals secretary DJ Pandian, Moser Baer ED Ratal Puri and Hitachi Hi-Rel Electronics MD Piyush Shah addressed participants at two day Indian Solar Investment & Technology Summit in Gandhinagar.

TERI's associate fellow and area convenor Alok Kumar Jindal said that "Based on the adaptability of this atlas, the same type of atlases can be developed for all the states having good renewable energy resources. The report is an interactive tool to help the planners and policy makers for promotion and development of renewable energy projects at large scale.”

The methodology for the study includes data collection on the previous estimates of renewable energy potential in the state, analysing those data, finding the shortcoming and need for its improvements and additionally the impact of technology development in to the actual potential. TERI contacted various government agencies and other relevant institutions data collection. The land use and land cover data of Gujarat were collected for the present year and analysed through the Geographic Information System.

The Energy-Environment Technology Development division of TERI focuses on development and propagation of products and services based on renewable energy technologies and resource-efficiency through multidisciplinary approach and close interaction with the user community and industry. Czech power regulator seeks to stamp out renewables support

The Czech energy regulator is seeking new legislation to stop all renewable energy support from 2014, warning that the current system needs to be braked if Czech business and consumers are not to be overloaded with tens of billions of crowns in higher electricity charges.

Ms Alena Vitásková chairwoman of Energy Regulatory Office compared the current Czech renewable support legislation to a runaway train with defective brakes which had already gone off the rails one time in the solar boom which culminated in 2010. She said that "It must be stopped in time so that this does not happen a second time. If not, there will be a severe impact on the national economy of the Czech Republic."

Ms Vitásková told a news conference that the Czech Republic should already fulfill its pledge to the European Union to produce 13.5% of its overall electricity needs from renewable by 2013 with the figure at 10.55% as of the end of 2011. The deadline to meet the target is 2020. She added that would leave the way open for the country to scrap all support for new renewable power from 2014 onwards.

The ERÚ boss said a ban on new renewables support from 2014 could save the country CZK 196 billion as compared to waiting to take the step in 2020 or up to CZK 617.3 billion if the step was delayed and stalled new rules widening the scope of renewables support is passed. Vitásková said her office has taken steps to prepare a new law on renewable support and also a rushed amendment ready to be pushed through quickly if the new measure offering more generous renewable support becomes law.
