Siemens Gamesa to Build Wind Turbine Nacelle Facility in New York

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
20 Feb, 2023, 3:30 am

Siemens Gamesa has announced its intention to build a major nacelle manufacturing facility in New York State, subject to the company’s wind turbines being selected by the New York authorities in their third offshore wind solicitation. The planned facility will be located at the Port of Coeymans. It would create up to approximately 420 direct jobs, support a significant rise in indirect jobs, and represent an investment of around USD 500 million in the region.

Siemens Gamesa is also committing to localizing several new component supplier facilities, including steel component fabrication, bearings, and composite components, demonstrating the further development of a sustainable local supply chain ecosystem. This could help double the number of jobs created by the facility.

New York expects to procure a minimum of 2 GW of offshore wind energy, and up to 4.7 GW in this third round of procurement to achieve a total of 9 GW of offshore wind energy. This is a significant part of the United States’ target to realize 30 GW of offshore wind power by 2030.

NYK & Siemens Gamesa Ink Pact for CTV for Offshore Wind

22 Feb, 2023, 3:30 am

NYK has concluded a time charter contract with Siemens Gamesa for a crew transport vessel for an offshore wind power generation facility. The CTV will be owned by NYK and managed by Hokkaido-based Hokuyo Kaiun, an NYK Group company. The vessel will be engaged in transporting workers to the offshore wind power generation facility at Ishikari Bay New Port, which is scheduled to begin commercial operation in December 2023.

The CTV will be used to transport workers between the offshore work site facilities and the onshore base for maintenance work after the offshore wind turbines are in operation.

The Ishikari Bay New Port offshore wind farm project is being developed by Green Power Ishikari, a special purpose company established by Green Power Investment Corporation. It plans to construct, operate, and maintain 14 units of SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbines manufactured by Siemens Gamesa in a sea area of approximately 500 hectares.

An aluminum catamaran of about 20 to 40 meters in length that is built for high-speed operation and comes equipped with stability equipment to transport technicians and crews safely and comfortably to and from sites during offshore wind power construction, maintenance, and operation of offshore wind farms.

Siemens Gamesa to Supply Wind Turbines to AM Green Energy

Siemens Gamesa, a leading renewable energy company, has signed a supply agreement with ArcelorMittal subsidiary, AM Green Energy, to provide 46 SG 3.6-145 wind turbines for a 166MW project in Andhra Pradesh, India. The wind farm is part of a larger 989MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project by AMGEPL in the Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh. The deal will help AM/NS India, a steel plant located in Gujarat, meet 20% of its electricity needs from renewable resources and reduce its carbon emissions by 1.5 million metric tons annually.

Mr. Amit Harlalka, Vice President, ArcelorMittal and CFO, AM/NS India, commented, "Our partnership with Siemens Gamesa for this benchmark model project demonstrates how establishing partnerships and collaborating across the supply chain can help us progress faster toward our decarbonization targets.”

Siemens Gamesa will manufacture the turbines at its plants in India, and the supply will begin in the second quarter of 2023. This deal marks an important milestone for the company’s onshore 3.X platform, with order entry surpassing 1.5GW, and reinforces its competitiveness in the Indian market.

Andhra Pradesh, where the project is located, has significant potential for power generation through wind projects. This project is in line with the state government’s Renewable Energy Export Policy 2020 for solar, wind, and hybrid projects, which aims to promote the export of renewable energy outside the state.

Siemens Gamesa Takes Lead in Wind Circularity with GreenerTowers

Siemens Gamesa, a world leader in wind turbine technology, has announced the launch of its GreenerTower, a wind turbine tower made of more sustainable steel that ensures a CO2 reduction of at least 63% in the tower steel plates compared to conventional steel. Siemens Gamesa’s new thorough qualification process verifies that only a maximum of 0.7 metric tons of CO2-equivalent emissions are permitted per metric ton of steel, while maintaining the same steel properties and quality. The tower, which will be available as an option for both onshore and offshore wind turbines for projects to be installed from 2024 onward, will help reduce carbon footprint in the wind industry.

“Wind power is one of the cornerstones of the green energy transition. With the launch of the GreenerTower, Siemens Gamesa leads the efforts to further push wind circularity and net-zero emissions,” says Maximilian Schnippering, Head of Sustainability at Siemens Gamesa.

Tower production currently accounts for more than one-third of all wind-turbine-related CO2 emissions. If all towers installed by the company in one year were replaced with GreenerTowers, it would be equivalent to removing more than 466,000 cars from the roads in Europe for a year.

RWE and Siemens Gamesa have already agreed to introduce 36 GreenerTowers at the 1,000MW Thor offshore wind power project in Denmark. Mr. Sven Utermöhlen, CEO RWE Offshore Wind, said: “By piloting the GreenerTower at our Thor offshore wind farm, RWE is now once again taking the lead by helping to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of wind turbines.”

Aquila European Renewables finds no issues with Siemens Gamesa turbines

Aquila European Renewables plc (LON:AERS) on Friday provided an update on its exposure to Siemens Gamesa turbines in the context of the recently reported increase in failure rates of components used in such machines.

The investment firm advised by Aquila Capital Investmentgesellschaft mbH said in a statement that its current portfolio includes only one wind farm featuring Siemens Gamesa hardware and that the particular facility is not equipped with the turbine models in which the supplier has identified technical issues. The company further noted that, while the products’ warranty period has ended in 2022, it has not experienced serial defects so far.
