ArcelorMittal, in its pursuit of innovation, is dedicated to reducing the weight of "3rd generation" steel used in the automotive industry. This high-strength product currently constitutes 60% of the steel utilized in automobiles. The company's latest generation of this steel boasts exceptional mechanical strength of up to 1,800 pascals/megapascals and a 20% reduction in weight, offering remarkable properties for automotive applications.
Concurrently, the implementation of laser welding techniques allows for precise adjustment of steel thickness and grade based on client requirements, reducing material consumption and minimizing waste. ArcelorMittal's collaboration with Compiègne technology university led to the establishment of the FuseMetal lab, which plays a crucial role in advancing vehicle lightening solutions and optimizing material usage to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
ArcelorMittal's commitment to the automotive sector extends to their substantial investments in France. The company plans to launch five new production lines in 2024 at their Mardyck electrical steel sites, dedicated to manufacturing electrical steel for battery electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. This endeavor involves a significant investment of €300 million.
Furthermore, ArcelorMittal is spearheading the deployment of a 5G network for industrial purposes in France. This initiative supports the digitization and robotization of their French production sites, driving operational efficiency and innovation. The 5G Steel project, initiated in 2021, has already been successfully implemented at the Dunkirk and Mardyck plants.
Collaborations are at the forefront of ArcelorMittal's sustainable approach. Recently, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with KIRCHHOFF Automotive, focusing on the development of low carbon-emission steel for cars and trucks. This partnership aims to strengthen their collaboration on sustainability topics, further driving progress towards a greener automotive industry.
ArcelorMittal's unwavering commitment to research and development, as well as their focus on sustainability, positions them as a key player in the pursuit of lightweight automotive steel solutions. By pushing boundaries and collaborating with industry partners, the company is at the forefront of innovation, creating a more sustainable and efficient future for the automotive sector.
