Zorgt Elon Musk voor de trendomkeer bij bitcoin en dogecoin?

Eerder deze week gaf Elon Musk in een Twitterbericht aan nog altijd bitcoin, ether en dogecoin vast te houden in zijn portefeuille en geen intenties te hebben deze van de hand te doen. Hoewel hij voorop stelt dat het ten tijde van hogere inflatie beter is om assets als aandelen en huizen te bezitten, gelooft hij ook nog steeds in zijn cryptoposities.

Inflatiehedge?
Bitcoin wordt door cryptoliefhebbers al langer als de ideale asset tegen inflatie gezien. Door de maximale hoeveelheid van 21 miljoen bitcoinmunten en het vooraf afgesproken tempo waarin nieuwe bitcoins worden vrijgegeven, zou de digitale munt opgewassen moeten zijn tegen inflatie.

Digitale munten kunnen immers niet net als traditionele valuta onbeperkt worden bijgedrukt. Bitcoin heeft de rol van inflatiehedge vooralsnog echter niet kunnen waarmaken.

De hoge risico's van het beleggen in crypto, door de hoge mate van koersvolatiliteit, zorgt ervoor dat speculanten in onzekere tijden juist hun geld daar als eerste weghalen.

Crypto's worden nu dus nog vooral gezien als een soort investering in techbedrijven. Blijkbaar moet bitcoin zich eerst nog bewijzen in een periode van hogere inflatie voordat de brede massa ze als inflatiehedge gaat gebruiken.

Bitcoin mist kracht
De koers van bitcoin is de afgelopen weken nauwelijks opgeschoten. De dalende fase vanaf begin november vorig jaar is onlangs overgegaan in een meer zijwaarts gericht koersverloop, maar van een serieus herstel is ook nog geen sprake.

Het uitblijven van nieuwe impulsen zorgt ervoor dat de koers al enige tijd in een neutrale bandbreedte beweegt onder de weerstand rond $45.850.

Rond dit niveau is de koers al meerdere keren op nieuwe verkoopdruk gestuit. Doordat een overtuigend herstel uitblijft, neemt het risico op een nieuwe daling steeds verder toe.

Wanneer de consolidatiefase neerwaarts wordt afgebroken, kan de oude dalende trend weer worden opgepakt. De volgende steun wacht dan pas in de zone rond $29.000, gevormd door de oude bodems van begin en medio 2021.

Dogecoin zakt verder weg
Elon Musk gelooft er nog heilig in, maar de koers van dogecoin geeft al een tijdje aan dat steeds minder beleggers zijn visie steunen.

Vanaf het hoogtepunt in mei vorig jaar is dogecoin al 85% van haar marktwaarde verloren. Aanhoudende verkoopdruk zorgt voor steeds lagere koersen.

Het technisch plaatje oogt dan ook zeker niet sterk. Op de weekgrafiek is goed te zien dat de koers een toppatroon heeft afgerond met de doorbraak onder de bodems van medio vorig jaar.

Deze doorbraak heeft ruimte vrijgemaakt voor een grotere daling richting de volgende steun op $0,04. Hiermee heeft de koers nog een neerwaarts potentieel van ruim 60% vanaf het huidige niveau.

Dalende trend
Dogecoin beweegt op dagbasis al enige tijd in een dalend trendkanaal, waarbij lagere toppen en bodems erop wijzen dat speculanten op steeds lagere niveaus uitstappen.

De doorbraak onder de laatste koersbodem heeft de dalende fase een nieuwe impuls gegeven richting lagere koersniveaus. Van enige bodemvorming is vooralsnog dan ook zeker geen sprake.

Elon Musk zal zijn positie in dogecoin niet verkopen, maar speculanten zouden er verstandig aan doen deze munt voorlopig te mijden.

Oekraïne is het volgende land dat crypto gelegaliseerd heeft. Waarschijnlijk niet in de laatste plaats vanwege de vele crypto donaties.

The founder of Skybridge Capital has predicted that “bitcoin will be used by many Latin American countries as legal tender over time, not just El Salvador.” He recently doubled down on his $100K bitcoin price prediction but does not currently see the cryptocurrency as a hedge against inflation.

Bitcoin Will Be Legal Tender in Many More Countries, Says Scaramucci
The founder of investment management firm Skybridge Capital, Anthony Scaramucci, expects more countries to adopt bitcoin as legal tender.

“I see bitcoin in its current status as an early adopting technological asset,” he said in an interview with Marketwatch last week. The Skybridge Capital founder elaborated:

I think bitcoin will be used by many Latin American countries as legal tender over time, not just El Salvador, but other countries.

El Salvador adopted bitcoin as legal tender alongside the U.S. dollar in September last year. The Salvadoran president, Nayib Bukele, predicted in January that two more countries will make BTC legal tender this year.

The CEO of Devere Group, Nigel Green, also made a prediction in January. He said three countries will adopt bitcoin as legal tender this year.

Meanwhile, the CEO of cryptocurrency derivatives trading platform Bitmex, Alex Hoeptner, said in October last year that five countries will accept bitcoin as legal tender by the end of this year.

Scaramucci recently doubled down on his bitcoin price prediction of $100K. He also believes that the crypto could reach $500K a coin in the long run.

In addition, he expects more than a billion wallets to hold bitcoin by the end of 2025, and the number of BTC users to reach 2.5 to 3 billion in the next decade. The Skybridge Capital founder opined:

When it gets there, then I think as a mature asset, we could have a conversation about whether or not it operates as an inflation hedge.

Scaramucci has said several times recently that he does not see bitcoin as a hedge against inflation yet.

The idea of whether bitcoin is a good hedge against inflation has been a hot topic among investors and fund managers. In March last year, Bank of America said, “Bitcoin has not been particularly compelling as an inflation hedge.” In June, Goldman Sachs said that bitcoin is an alternative inflation hedge to copper, not gold. The investment bank previously described bitcoin as “the retail inflation hedge.”

In contrast, global investment bank JPMorgan said in October that bitcoin is the new inflation hedge, noting that institutional investors were dumping gold for bitcoin, seeing the cryptocurrency as a better hedge against inflation.

EU Regulators Warn Crypto Unsuitable as Investment or Means of Payment for Most Retail Consumers

Several European regulators have issued a joint warning on crypto assets. “These assets are not suited for most retail consumers as an investment or as a means of payment or exchange,” they stressed.

EU Supervisory Authorities Warn About the Danger of Investing in Crypto Assets
Three European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) issued a joint statement warning about the risks of crypto assets Thursday.

The European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) “warn consumers that many crypto assets are highly risky and speculative.” Their statement also outlines “key steps consumers can take to ensure they make informed decisions.”

The regulators explained that their warning followed “growing consumer activity and interest in crypto assets and the aggressive promotion of those assets and related products to the public, including through social media.”

The supervisory authorities stated:

These assets are not suited for most retail consumers as an investment or as a means of payment or exchange.

They noted that consumers “face the very real possibility of losing all their invested money if they buy these assets.”

Furthermore, the ESAs cautioned that consumers “should be alert to the risks of misleading advertisements, including via social media and influencers” and “should be particularly wary of promised fast or high returns, especially those that look too good to be true.”

Consumers should also be aware of “the lack of recourse or protection available to them, as crypto-assets and related products and services typically fall outside existing protection under current EU financial services rules,” the ESAs’ statement describes.

The EBA noted that the European Commission’s proposal for Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) remains subject to the outcome of the co-legislative process and so consumers do not currently benefit from any of the safeguards outlined in that proposal because it is not yet EU law.

The European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) voted against an amendment to ban proof-of-work assets for EU companies earlier this week.

Energieverbruik van Bitcoin wordt, ook hier op het forum veelvuldig aangehaald als reden dat Bitcoin geen bestaansrecht heeft en verboden zou moeten worden. Meestal door mensen die waarschijnlijk nog niet eens bereid zijn om de was een keertje op te hangen in plaats van in de droger te gooien, of de verwarming een graadje lager te zetten.

Het FD geeft slechte informatie over crypto.
Ik heb wel eens interview gezien met de redacteur financiële markten. Hij begrijpt crypto niet. Heeft zich er nooit in verdiept. Hij begrijpt zelfs de rol van goud niet in het financiële systeem. Het enige wat hij begrijpt is de Buffett aanpak.
Dus, als je serieuze informatie wilt over crypto dan zul je andere bronnen moeten gebruiken.

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and 10 other lawmakers have introduced the “Digital Asset Sanctions Compliance Enhancement Act of 2022.” The bill “would place sweeping restrictions on persons who build, operate, and use cryptocurrency networks even if they have no knowledge or intent to help evade sanctions,” an expert said.

Lawmakers Unveil Digital Asset Sanctions Compliance Enhancement Act
U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren introduced a bill titled “Digital Asset Sanctions Compliance Enhancement Act of 2022” during a Senate Banking Committee hearing Thursday. The bill is co-sponsored by 10 other Democratic senators, including Mark Warner, Jack Reed, and Jon Tester.

The aim of the bill is “to ensure that Vladimir Putin and Russian elites don’t use digital assets to undermine the international community’s economic sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine,” the senators explained in a joint press release.

Noting that the bill will “strengthen our sanctions program and close off any avenues for Russian evasion,” Senator Warren claims:

Putin and his cronies can move, store, and hide their wealth using cryptocurrencies, potentially allowing them to evade the historic economic sanctions the U.S. and its partners across the world have levied in response to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

However, many people have pointed out that cryptocurrency will not help Russia evade sanctions, including FBI Director Christopher Wray, who said last week that the Russians’ ability to circumvent sanctions with cryptocurrency is “highly overestimated.” Carol House, the director of cybersecurity for the National Security Council, recently said that crypto is an ineffective tool to circumvent sanctions.

The Digital Asset Sanctions Compliance Enhancement Act would enable the president to sanction foreign crypto firms doing business with sanctioned Russian entities, prohibiting their transactions with U.S. persons and blocking their assets. It would also give the Treasury secretary clear authority to prohibit crypto platforms and transaction facilitators operating in the U.S. from transacting with any Russian crypto users. The Treasury will be required to identify foreign crypto trading platforms that are deemed high risk for sanctions evasions and money laundering. The bill would also require U.S. taxpayers to report any offshore crypto transactions exceeding $10K.

Jerry Brito, executive director of D.C.-based think tank Coin Center, explained that the bill “would place sweeping restrictions on the cryptocurrency ecosystem under the guise of bolstering sanctions against Russia for its unjustified invasion of Ukraine.” He detailed:

The bill would place sweeping restrictions on persons who build, operate, and use cryptocurrency networks even if they have no knowledge or intent to help evade sanctions.

According to the text of the bill, the term “digital asset transaction facilitator” is defined as “any person, or group of persons, that significantly and materially facilitates the purchase, sale, lending, borrowing, exchange, custody, holding, validation, or creation of digital assets on the account of others, including any communication protocol, decentralized finance technology, smart contract, or other software, including open-source computer code.”

Noting that “miners, node operators, smart contract developers, etc.” would be subject to sanctions under Senator Warren’s new bill, Brito stressed:

"The bill] calls for sanctioning technologists and users merely for the act of publishing open source software or facilitating communication among network participants. This is unnecessary, overbroad, and unconstitutional."

Vandaag wordt er in het Europees parlement gestemd over een mogelijk verbod op Proof of Work mining, gelijk China gedaan heeft. Als die wet wordt aangenomen zal dat betekenen dat er in de EU oa geen bitcoin meer gemijnd mag worden. De wet zou dan ingaan in 2025.

Terecht. Als je naar verduurzaming wilt, ga je energie niet besteden aan onzin.

Ik denk er anders over. Niet jezelf beperken tot enkele nieuwsbronnen, maar veel en vooral ook veel internationaal nieuws tot je nemen. Als je je nieuws haalt uit 2 Nederlandse nieuwsbronnen krijg je m.i. een zeer vertekend beeld op de wereld. Ik prefereer nieuwsbronnen als Nu.nl, CNN, Al Jazeera en Euronews. Objectief nieuws bestaat niet helaas, en dat begint al bij jezelf: een 65 jarige, blanke, Nederlandse man zal totaal anders naar het nieuws kijken dan een 20 jarige, zwarte vrouw uit Nigeria.
Wat crypto betreft ben ik het eens met Zaphod B: bijna geen enkele Nederlandse beleggingssite heeft de afgelopen jaren kwalitatief nieuws over crypto gegeven.
Gratis nieuws bestaat inderdaad niet, je betaalt voor het lezen van online nieuws met irritante reclames, maar goed die vind je in kranten en op FD.nl waarschijnlijk ook.
