Microsoft will out bid everyone. Microsoft has the superior ability to monetize HERE. How much would someone pay for Google Maps? If you offered Google $10 billion, would Google sell? Not likely.
The value of HERE in the WinTel Windows 10 ecosystem is too significant for Microsoft to ignore. Nokia said HERE was worth $2 billion. Someone bid $3 billion. Now BMW offers $4 billion clearly indicating they will bid higher. I am sure Microsoft is talking with Nokia. Seems like this deal will be completed in a month or so. Microsoft can buy it and then tell BMW they can license the technology (probably at a lower cost than $4 billion).
If you read between the lines, General Atlantic will pony up $1.2 billion, BMW $780 million and each auto company chipping in the same. General Atlantic is implying they will extract a revenue stream from licensing HERE to other users and allow BMW and other auto companies free access to the technology. This also tells Microsoft that BMW and other auto companies are willing to pay $40 million a year to license the technology (5% times $780 million price).
If you price a BMW, you have to spend like $4K to add navigation to the car. BMW sells 500,000 plus cars a year. At $4K option nav systems add $2 billion in revenue? Sounds ridiculous. Of course the cost to add the nav system is high. Maybe the nav system option is not $4K.
