Selective tendering pays off for BAM

BAM Construct UK has filed its 2016 accounts showing profit, turnover and cash all up on the previous year.

Turnover at BAM Construct UK rose by 19.5% to € 1.213m in 2016 (2015: € 1.016m).

Profit from underlying operational activities was € 16m (2015: € 15m), and cash in the bank grew to € 132m from € 89m. At year-end the order book was a little down at € 1.871m (2015: € 1.950m).

Profit before tax of € 30m included a one-off exceptional gain of € 14m from changes to two defined benefit pension schemes.

Chief executive Graham Cash said that BAM had actively sought clients using a two-stage tender procurement process. “We have a full design practice, and a services engineering division, [so] we are able to assist a number of clients to achieve realistic cost plans and manage budget constraints through value engineering and creating better design options,” he said.

He added: “We have been tendering ever more selectively to ensure we focus on those schemes which maximise our differentiating capabilities. Our aim is to secure long-term strategic alliances with our clients. In 2016, 55% of our new work secured was repeat business with existing clients.”

In 2016 BAM was selected for the Procure 22 national health framework for England. It continued its participation on the Education Funding Agency’s national and regional contractors’ frameworks and major regional frameworks such as YORbuild and the Southern Construction Framework.

Bam Construct will target new sectors with its property development business after doubling profit in its latest financial results.

The contractor revealed its property development arm would look to expand into student accommodation and “other new or emerging sectors of the market” in 2017.

Bam Properties is currently developing two projects: Latitude, a 450,000 sq ft office development in Leeds, and Atlantic Square, a € 113m mixed-use project in the centre of Glasgow.

It has also previously developed a student accommodation project at Stoddart Street in Newcastle in a joint venture with Connislow, but the contractor said that joint venture would be wound up to allow Bam to “pursue student accommodation projects in its own right, or with funders”.

In its financial results for the year to 31 December 2016, the contractor reported a revenue of € 1bn, up from € 1.016ma year earlier.

Bam also reported a pre-tax profit of € 30m, more than double the € 15m reported in its previous results, leaving the firm with a pre-tax margin of 2.4 per cent, up from 1.3 per cent over the same period a year before.

Chief executive Graham Cash said the firm would look to target margins of “at least 3 per cent” by 2020, and added that Bam was “becoming increasingly selective” on the projects that it bids for.

He added that 55 per cent of the contractor's work won in the year was repeat business with existing clients.

The contractor said its construction arm, which posted a turnover of € 1.117m, is aiming to deliver 25 per cent of its work through frameworks, and will “consider the potential” of the private rented sector this year.

Frameworks that Bam has won a place on include the € 5bn ProCure22 health framework and the YORbuild2 regional construction framework.

It will also maintain its focus on three core sectors: commercial, education, and health.

Its construction arm won 36 contracts during 2016, which include a € 46m campus extension for Birmingham City University and the 100,000 sq ft Coal Drops Yard project in King's Cross for client Argent.

The contractor said that most of its projects were procured through a two-stage tender or negotiated basis, rather than single-stage tender process.

Bam also revealed it would up investment in its services engineering division to increase its in-house M&E capabilities.

The group reported an order book of € 2bn, adding that it had not seen any significant impacts from last June's EU referendum to date.

It also increased staff numbers year on year and now employs 2,315 people, up from 2,291 a year earlier.

Bam Construct UK, part of Royal Bam, has reported turnover for 2016 of € 1bn, up 19%, with gross profits up 32% to € 67m.

The firm reported pre-tax profits of € 30m, more than double 2015’s figure, boosted by a € 14m exceptional gain resulting from an adjustment to the group’s pension scheme. Underlying operating profits rose 9.2% to € 16m.

Bam’s order book was 4% down at € 2bn.

The firm’s construction division notched up turnover of € 1.118m, a rise of 22%, while pre-tax profits were down by € 226.320 at € 6m. Bam said the division completed 55 projects and won 36 new projects during the year, including coal Drops Yard at King’s Cross and Three Snowhill, a 19-storey tower in Birmingham for Ballymore Estates. It said that 55% of the work secured represented repeat business.

(Persbericht Dutch Windwheel Corporation:) Rotterdam, 29 juni 2017 - Op 29 juni presenteerde de Windwheel Corporation de nieuwe ontwerpen van de Dutch Windwheel, het icoon van technologische innovatie dat de skyline van Rotterdam moet verrijken. Minister Kamp (ministerie van Economische Zaken), gedeputeerde Bom-Lemstra (provincie Zuid-Holland) en wethouder Struijvenberg (gemeente Rotterdam) tekenden in het World Trade Center in Rotterdam bovendien een Green Deal, die de kansen op realisatie van de Dutch Windwheel moet vergroten.
Internationale blikvanger

Medio 2015 presenteerden de Rotterdamse bedrijven BLOC, DoepelStrijkers en Meysters het plan voor de Dutch Windwheel: een iconisch gebouw dat onder meer woningen en een attractie bevat. Het radicale ontwerp omarmt maximaal de mogelijkheden van energieproductie en beleving. Het is ontworpen voor doorgaande innovatie en hergebruik en wordt gebouwd met materialen afkomstig uit de Rotterdamse regio. De visie van de Dutch Windwheel ging de wereld over: internationale media berichtten massaal over het project, tot aan het Chinese journaal aan toe. Om een zo circulair, duurzaam en gezond mogelijk gebouw te realiseren en het energie-opwekkend vermogen maximaal te maken, spraken de initiatiefnemers de ambitie uit de Dutch Windwheel uit te rusten met geavanceerde technologische oplossingen, die deels nog (door)ontwikkeld moeten worden.
Innovatiepartners

Daaraan wordt inmiddels gewerkt door een innovatieconsortium bestaande uit Arup, Koninklijke BAM Groep, Deltares, Dura Vermeer, ECN, Eneco, Evides, Siemens, SPIE, TNO en de Windwheel Corporation (waarin de Rotterdamse bedrijven BLOC, DoepelStrijkers en Meysters zijn vertegenwoordigd). Het doel van het consortium is om de kwaliteit en duurzaamheid van gebouwen drastisch te vergroten met behulp van klimaat architectuur en geavanceerde technologie. Zij worden daarbij gesteund door InnovationQuarter, NBTC Holland Marketing, PNO en Rotterdam Partners.
Nieuw ontwerp

Mede op basis van de resultaten van het innovatieconsortium, is de afgelopen maanden een grote slag gemaakt met het ontwerp. In het doorontwikkelde ontwerp, dat onder leiding van DoepelStrijkers en Arup tot stand is gekomen, zijn de karakteristieke eigenschappen van de Dutch Windwheel overeind gebleven. Het complex kent bovendien nog steeds dezelfde functies, inclusief een attractie bestaande uit cabines die de bezoeker naar het hoogste punt van de Dutch Windwheel brengen. In het ontwerp is de constructie geoptimaliseerd en zijn de circulaire principes voor het materiaalgebruik en het klimaat, water- en energiesysteem verder uitgewerkt.
Publieke omarming

Diverse overheden omarmen de doelen van het consortium. De Dutch Windwheel wordt in de regionale Roadmap Next Economy aangemerkt als dragend project voor systeemdoorbraken. Het project is benoemd tot regionaal ‘fieldlab’ en de Metropoolregio Rotterdam Den Haag en de gemeente Rotterdam dragen bij aan het testen van de innovaties in de regio, met het doel de innovaties wereldwijd te vermarkten. Met het tekenen van de Green Deal onderschrijven de gemeente Rotterdam, de provincie Zuid-Holland en de Rijksoverheid de potentie van het project voor de regionale economie en werkgelegenheid. De Green Deal vormt het startpunt voor onderzoek naar de financiële haalbaarheid, de wijze van exploitatie en de locatie-eisen.

Rijden over zonnepanelen op 'energieweg' N401 bij Kockengen

Autorijden over een wegdek van zonnepanelen. Verre toekomst? Niet als het aan de provincie Utrecht en BAM infra ligt. De planning is om in het najaar van 2017 te starten met een innovatieve pilot op de provinciale weg N401 bij Kockengen. De voorbereidende werkzaamheden zijn inmiddels gestart.

Op de hoofdrijbaan van de N401 wordt een zonnepanelenmat met beschermlaag bevestigd op het wegdek. De zonnepanelen zijn bestand tegen zware voertuigen en zijn geschikt voor drukke wegen waar dagelijks meer dan 10.000 voertuigen gebruik van maken. De energiemat wordt aangebracht op één rijstrook over een lengte van 20 meter met een totale oppervlakte van 50 m². De pilot duurt 2 jaar.
Doel

BAM infra en de provincie testen met deze pilot het Franse product Wattway op het rendement van de zonnepanelen en het effect op de gebruikte materialen bij toepassing op een drukke weg. Ook wordt onderzocht of de zonnecellenmat leidt tot minder onderhoud aan het asfalt en de mogelijkheid om in de toekomst met de opgewekte energie de weg - over het jaar - energieneutraal te verwarmen, zodat gladheidsbestrijding niet meer nodig is of kan worden beperkt.
Voordeel

Zonnepanelen op het wegdek is een innovatie. Als deze pilot leidt tot een positieve uitkomst, dan kan dit product een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan de reductie van het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen en het verduurzamen van onze provinciale infrastructuur. Een bijkomend voordeel van het opwekken van elektrische energie via het wegdek is dat het landschap niet wordt aangetast.
Innovatie

De proef met Wattway vindt op dezelfde weg plaats als de proef om met bermplanten elektriciteit uit planten op te wekken (plant-E). Beide projecten leveren een bijdrage aan de energieagenda van de provincie Utrecht.

The firm reported pretax profits of € 30m for the 12 months to the end of December 2016, more than double 2015’s figure, boosted by a € 14m exceptional gain resulting from an adjustment to the group’s pension scheme. Underlying operating profits rose 9.2% to € 16m.

The firm’s construction division notched up turnover of € 1.118m, a rise of 22%, while pretax profits were down by € 226.320 at € 6m.

BAM said the division completed 55 projects and won 36 new projects during the year, including developer Argent’s Coal Drops Yard at King’s Cross designed by Heatherwick Studio, and Three Snowhill, a 19-storey tower in Birmingham for Ballymore Estates. It said that 55% of the work secured represented repeat business.

The contractor said that it will look at expanding into the private rental sector this year as it explores potential growth opportunities and also plans to broaden its property development division targeting student accommodation and commercial development, having reorganised its portfolio.

Elsewhere construction firm Mace posted a 70% dive in pretax profit for last year on the back of two difficult jobs. In its latest results for the year to 31 December 2016 the company’s pretax profit has fallen to € 12m, down from € 41m two years ago.

The fall in pretax profit was due to the contractor’s work on developer Landsec’s € 2bn mixed-use scheme Nova in London’s Victoria district, plus Highpoint, a 46-storey PRS tower in Elephant and Castle.

Phase one of Nova finished in April, over half a year late with Landsec confirming in May that it had run late and over budget, blaming the “complexities of construction – together with competition for labour in a busy sector”.

Mace was the main contractor on the scheme, and in May 2015 was forced to replace the concrete works contractor after the incumbent, PC Harrington Contractors, entered administration.

However, according to its results Mace has nearly hit its € 2bn turnover target four years earlier than planned.

The firm reported that the group’s revenue had risen to € 2bn in 2016, up from € 2bn for the previous year.

Having hit this target, Mace said it would now review its strategy and targets to take it through to 2022.

The group’s cash balance stood at € 132m for 2016, compared with € 139m for the previous year.

Contractor Kier also revealed in its full-year results today that it will take a € 83m hit after taking the decision to close its Hong Kong and Caribbean businesses.

The firm is set to close its Caribbean business following the agreement of a final account with an unnamed client on what Kier called “a challenging project”, which is expected to complete “within the next three months”.

The firm is also putting aside € 11m for potential safety fines following new tougher sentencing guidelines.

Closure of the overseas operations is costing € 89m while the loss has been offset by income from the sale of Mouchel Consulting last October, which raised € 44m.

It is the latest phase of Kier’s “portfolio simplification programme” which started after the acquisition of Mouchel.

Kier said: “Since the acquisition of Mouchel in June 2015, the group has undertaken a programme of portfolio simplification allowing it to focus on, and grow, its market-leading positions in regional building, infrastructure services and housing.

“This portfolio simplification programme is nearing conclusion and, taking into account the other non-underlying items, will generate cash for the group to enable it to focus on the future growth of its core operations.”

BAM realiseert nieuw trainingscentrum voor Falck op Maasvlakte

Rotterdam, 29 juni 2017 – Falck en BAM hebben een overeenkomst getekend voor de bouw van een nieuw trainingscentrum op de Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. BAM realiseert het hoofdgebouw en de oefenplaten, inclusief kabel- en leidingwerk. BAM is gestart met de uitwerking van het ontwerp en begint in september 2017 met de bouw. De planning is het trainingscentrum in juli 2018 op te leveren.

Falck verzorgt trainingen op het gebied van (brand-)veiligheid, incidenten en crisismanagement. Wereldwijd traint Falck jaarlijks vanuit 35 trainingscentra circa 340.000 mensen uit de olie, gas, wind, scheepvaart en (petro)chemische industrie, evenals aan lokale overheden en bedrijven.

De nieuwe locatie ligt op een steenworp afstand van het huidige trainingscentrum. Naast uitvoering van alle bouw- en infrawerkzaamheden, coördineert BAM ook de verplaatsing van de trainingsobjecten naar de nieuwe locatie. Het gebouw telt twee bouwlagen en heeft een bruto-vloeroppervlak van 3.000 m2.
