27 Oct, 2022, 4:05 am

Poland is going ahead with its offshore wind build-out program by starting a competitive process for an offshore wind seabed permit within 53.E1 area in the Polish Baltic Sea. RWE is in the race and has submitted a bid for the up to 1.5-gigawatts site, located around 75 kilometres off the coast of Ustka. Based on RWE’s expertise in offshore wind development, efficient project delivery, safe operation of similar offshore wind farms in Europe, the company has developed a unique concept for this particular offshore area focusing inter alia on the efficient area co-usage.

For many years, RWE has been driving forward the Polish energy transition by developing, building and operating onshore wind farms. With its portfolio RWE is among the five largest Polish onshore wind operators. In addition RWE is continuously diversifying its Polish renewables portfolio by investing in solar projects.

Furthermore RWE is progressing with realising F.E.W. Baltic II, one of the first offshore wind farms in the Polish Baltic Sea. Once fully operational, the 350 megawatts (MW) wind farm will be capable of producing enough green electricity to supply the equivalent needs of around 350,000 Polish households. Through the F.E.W. Baltic II project, RWE will contribute significantly to the local economy – one of its strategic growth markets in Europe. To contribute further, RWE is also ready to place very competitive bids for the other additional areas made available for offshore wind farms by the Polish government. Awarded seabed permits out of this process have the chance to qualify and participate in Contract for Difference (CfD) auctions starting in 2025.

Baltic Power Project Driving New Investments

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
28 Oct, 2022, 4:45 am

Poland’s first installation terminal to be located in Swinoujscie and a turbine factory to be built by Vestas in Szczecin are two new investment projects now afoot in connection with the Baltic Power offshore wind farm. The joint venture project between the ORLEN Group and Northland Power will require 76 state-of-the-art 15 MW turbines from Vestas, whose components will be manufactured at the supplier’s new assembly factory in Szczecin. The turbine factory, to be manned by a staff of up to 700, is scheduled for completion in 2024, while the ORLEN Group’s installation terminal at the Port of Swinoujscie will commence operations in 2025.

Parts delivered for installation to the approximately 20-hectare terminal site will be offshore wind farm components, including turbines manufactured by Vestas. Each of the two available wharves will enable initial installation of wind turbine towers more than 100 metres high, weighing about 1,000 tonnes each. The length of each wharf (250 metres) will suffice to accommodate the operation of the largest specialised jack-up vessels currently available for installing offshore wind farm components. The port is expected to commence operations in 2025, and will employ around 100 people during the installation work.

The ORLEN Group’s investment in an installation port to be constructed at the Port of Swinoujscie is crucial from the point of view of the time frames of both the Baltic Power project and future projects to be undertaken by ORLEN Neptun within Polish waters of the Baltic Sea by 2040.

The first project to be delivered with the support of the installation terminal in Swinoujscie will be Baltic Power, a joint venture between the ORLEN Group and Northland Power. Thanks to a determined effort of a team of nearly 90 experts from 10 countries, it is now the most advanced project within Polish waters of the Baltic Sea. The company has already secured all key components of the offshore wind farm through a partially local supply chain.

The Baltic Power wind farm will feature 76 turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW, to be supplied by Vestas. These turbines are currently at the cutting edge of what is available on the market, and Baltic Power will be one of the world’s first wind farms where they will be deployed. The contract with Vestas provides for the supply and installation of the turbines and the provision of a full range of maintenance services for up to 15 years. In addition, recognising further development potential of the Polish offshore wind sector, the company has decided to locate its new assembly factory in Szczecin.

The new Vestas factory will assemble turbine nacelles and hubs. The facility, located in the region of Western Pomerania, will supply manufactured components to the Polish and global markets. The factory is expected to start operations in the second half of 2024, providing between 600 and 700 jobs. Thus, it will be the largest manufacturing plant in Poland linked directly to the offshore wind sector.

The Baltic Power farm, with a capacity of up to 1.2 GW, will be located about 23 kilometres off the coastline, near Choczewo and Leba. When completed in 2026, it will be able to generate clean energy for more than 1.5 million households.

Vestas verlaagt outlook

RWE Bids for Seabed Permit in Poland with Unique Concept

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
3 Nov, 2022, 3:28 am

Poland has started competitive processes for five offshore wind seabed permits in the Polish Baltic Sea. RWE has submitted bids for all five areas with a total capacity of 7.8 gigawatts,– including a site 44.E1, located in the direct vicinity of its F.E.W. Baltic II project. Based on its track record of more than 20 years in offshore wind, RWE has developed a comprehensive concept for this particular offshore wind farm named Sharco Duo. The 1.8-GW site is located north-west of the Slupsk Bank in the central Polish Baltic Sea.

RWE is expecting extensive synergies with its F.E.W. Baltic II project and operational base in Ustka during the development, construction and operation of Sharco Duo. So the company will be able to provide Poland with green and low-cost electricity.

RWE’s unique design concept for Sharco Duo supports the perfect integration of the offshore wind farm into the Polish energy system, including green hydrogen production – offshore and onshore – together with innovative electricity storage solutions. RWE is also planning to support biodiversity and enhance the local ecology, flora and fauna. Safeguarding the ecosystem is also a key issue during construction and operation. Therefore, some of the many eco innovation solutions being proposed by RWE are low-noise foundation installation systems and sustainable usage of recyclable components. Another focus will be on a low-emissions operating strategy.

City of Bedburg & RWE Put New Wind Farm into Operation

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
4 Nov, 2022, 4:11 am

On recultivated land at the Garzweiler open-cast mine, well-established partners, the city of Bedburg and RWE, successfully connect another wind farm with a capacity of 28.5 megawatts (MW) to the grid. The five wind turbines of the 30-million-euro “Bedburg A 44n” project have the capacity to generate enough green electricity to meet the annual needs of 28,000 households - more than the city's citizens and businesses consume. The turbines complement the existing Königshovener Höhe wind farm, also part of the partnership, with 21 turbines and increases the electrical output by almost 30 percent. In total, RWE operates with the city of Bedburg turbines with a total capacity of 95 MW on the territory of the city.

In the case of “Bedburg A 44n”, it is not only the choice of location on recultivated land at the Garzweiler open-cast mine that is innovative: four of the new wind turbines feed their electricity into the public supply grid via the existing infrastructure of the open-cast mine. The fifth turbine will supply electricity to the modern resource protection settlement Bedburg-Kaster, which is currently under construction. Part of the electricity from the fifth wind turbine supplies this settlement indirectly, sending a portion of its production to an energy storage system. The rest flows into the general supply grid.

As with the Königshovener Höhe wind farm, the city of Bedburg has a 49 percent stake in the new wind farm and RWE has a 51 percent stake.

Nordex Bags Certificates for 4 MW, 5 MW & 6 MW Turbines

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
14 Nov, 2022, 1:37 pm

Nordex Group has received three major certificates for turbines in the 4 MW, 5 MW and 6 MW class.

TÜV SÜD has awarded the IEC Type Certificate, valid worldwide, in accordance with the IEC 61400-22 standard to the 5.X MW turbine N163/5.X. The Nordex Group also obtained from

TÜV SÜD the official Statement of Compliance for design according to IEC and Type Approval certificate according to DIBt for the 6.X MW wind turbine N163/6.X.

In addition, UL Solutions also issued the IEC Type Certificate according to IEC 61400-22 standard for the N155/4.X turbine, first Type Certification for the 155 m rotor diameter platform.

The IEC 61400-22 Type Certification is of particular importance for the international marketing of wind turbines. Investors, project planners and wind farm operators expect their wind turbine generators to be certified in accordance with international standards. In this context, IEC certification is usually considered a prerequisite for tenders for international wind power projects. This is a recognised procedure and a crucial step in the project certification process.

With these Type Certificates, the independent certification bodies have now officially confirmed that the theoretical design calculations for the N155/4.X and N163/5.X reflect the expected behaviour of the turbines as measured on the field. The evaluation reviews among others the power performance, measurements of mechanical loads during operation as well as the lifetime of the turbine type under different operating modes. Likewise, the rotor blades for both turbines have been successfully certified for a lifetime of at least 20 years based on dynamical, full-scale rotor blade tests. The turbines can be operated with standard rotor blades as well as, in the case of the N163/5.X, with anti-icing rotor blades for cold regions.

In addition to the Type Certificate for the N163/5.X, the Nordex Group also received the “Statement of Compliance for the Design Evaluation“ for the N163/6.X turbine in the 6 MW class from TÜV SÜD. This statement of compliance for the design is the first important prerequisite for the future IEC Type Certificate for this turbine type.

Published on :
15 Nov, 2022, 1:37 pm

RWE has received the permit to build Hollandse Kust West VII offshore wind farm. The site is located in the North Sea, about 53 kilometres off the Dutch coast. On the site RWE will be able to deliver more than 760 megawatts of offshore wind capacity. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency recognised that RWE’s design for HKW VII delivers solutions for the optimal integration of offshore wind farms into the Dutch energy system.

To unlock full system integration the concept for HKW VII combines offshore wind with electrolyser capacity for green hydrogen production, and other flexible demand solutions like e-boilers and battery storage. In addition RWE plans to combine the HKW VII offshore wind farm with floating solar panels to allow a more efficient use of ocean space.

The wind farm is expected to be in full operation no later than 5 years after the permit is irrevocable. Then it can contribute to the Dutch ambitious build-out targets for offshore wind: 21 gigawatts (GW) of capacity by 2030 and 70 GW by 2050 are envisaged.

RWE also submitted a bid for HKW VI with an innovative ecological concept to deliver positive impact on biodiversity. The outcome of this tender is expected by the end of this year.

Siemens Gamesa Bags 70-MW Contract in Sweden

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
21 Nov, 2022, 4:20 am

Siemens Gamesa has teamed up once again with leading Swedish developer OX2 for another wind project in the country, using some of its most powerful onshore wind turbines.

Located in the municipality of Ljusdal, the 70MW Riberget wind project will be equipped with 11 of its SG 6.6-170 wind turbines, using a hub height of 115-meters to best capitalize on wind speeds in the area. This platform features one of the largest rotors in the onshore landscape, providing customers with a competitive Levelized Cost of Energy. Once the installation works are complete, Siemens Gamesa will be covering all maintenance services for the wind farm, with a 35-year service agreement in place.

The Riberget wind farm builds on several others that Siemens Gamesa has collaborated on with partner OX2 since 2010 which total over 600MW. The project is due to be commissioned in late 2024. When installed, the wind turbines will provide enough electricity to power over 60,000 homes. Around three million trees would also need to be planted to offset the amount of CO2 savings that the project would avoid, equivalent to 185,000 tons.

Milestone HKZ: Halfway Point in Construction

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
22 Nov, 2022, 6:02 am

Vattenfall announced that constructed of the world’s first offshore wind farm built without subsidies has reached halfway mark. The crew working on the Cadelar Wind Osprey installation vessel started on April 2022 when COVID restrictions were still in place. This meant testing procedures for each crew member, onboard quarantining and managing the logistical process within such parameters. While the strict rules and regulations were lifted for most people in the spring, the COVID protocol was maintained on the vessel until only a couple of weeks ago to prevent COVID outbreaks at sea.

The vessel makes round trips with four turbines per trip. Depending on the weather conditions, the trips take between five and twelve days. The crew work 12-hour shifts while on board in a two weeks on, two weeks off rotation. Unfavourable weather conditions can lead to the crew being delayed when transferring off the vessel and thus delayed getting home. This can easily take a toll on the morale of the crew

Delivering the work in itself is not a routine task either. It is the first time that the Siemens Gamesa 11 MW wind turbines are being installed in a serial setup and released for commercial production. The size and weight of the turbines require thorough engineering and planning to load them onto the vessel.
