Akuo Announces Refinancing of 5 Hydroelectric Plants in Bulgaria

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
18 Mar, 2022, 5:30 am

France-based independent global power producer & developer Akuo has announced that it has successfully secured the refinancing of a portfolio of five operational hydroelectric power plants in Bulgaria with a capacity of 15.5 MW. This deal follows the acquisition, in March 2021, of PVB Power Bulgaria who runs these five-assets that have been operational since 2010-2013 and are located on the Iskar River near Svoghe. Bridge funding from Eiffel Energy Transition Fund made the acquisition possible while the banking refinancing was undertaken by the EBRD and UniCredit Bulbank. Akuo is also partnering with RGREEN INVEST through its INFRAGREEN IV fund, who thus becomes a joint shareholder of these assets alongside Akuo, to the tune of 49%.

This refinancing operation by the EBRD and UniCredit Bulbank enables Akuo to free up financial resources that will be used to develop other greenfield renewable projects in the EBRD's countries of operation.

Bulgaria has set a target of increasing the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix to over 30% by 2030. This target includes a 2.6 GW increase in the country’s renewable electricity capacity to reach almost 7 GW by that time. The Svoghe portfolio will significantly bolster national efforts to meet this objective: by covering the electricity consumption of more than 20,000 Bulgarian households, it represents the equivalent of 35,000 metric tons of C02 emissions avoided annually.

Enel Green Power Using Robotics in Hydropower Sector

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
31 Mar, 2022, 6:30 am

Digitalization and robotics have very quickly risen to play a key role in the hydropower industry. Robots and drones are used to carry out inspections in areas where there’s insufficient space or that pose a danger to humans. And EGP personnel are at the forefront of developing such systems.

Hydropower has a long history behind it, it’s the oldest renewable energy source that’s ever been used, and a promising future in front of it, one which will see robots playing a prominent role. Indeed, as early as 2020, Enel Green Power was testing a number of robotic systems employed to inspect water pipes from the inside and provide information on their condition. Previously, even with the use of sophisticated digital instruments, such pipe inspections could only be conducted externally, particularly on pipes of a smaller diameter.

Today, hydropower plants play a key role in ensuring the security and stability of electricity supplies. For this reason, hydropower has a central role to play as a facilitator of the energy transition process, it is therefore essential to maintain and improve plant performance, including through the use of drones and robots.

Published on :
04 Jul, 2022, 6:30 am

The US Department of Energy has issued a Request for Information seeking public feedback to inform the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s nearly USD 630 million in investments in hydropower facilities. President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law invests in the “Maintaining and Enhancing Hydroelectricity Incentives” and “Hydroelectric Efficiency Improvement Incentives” programs to modernize the nation’s hydropower facilities and produce clean, affordable power. The funding will cover capital improvement projects that will make hydropower facilities more energy efficient and resilient. Water is a critical resource for generating clean, carbon-free electricity and crucial to reaching President Biden’s goal of a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.

Hydropower facilities, which use the flow of moving water to generate electricity, currently supply 6% of all electricity in the United States and account for 32% of renewable-electricity generation. Hydropower also provides critical energy storage, accounting for 93% of all utility-scale energy storage, helping to ensure that power is available when consumers need it. Many hydropower facilities, however, require upgrades to become more efficient or better integrated with other renewable energy sources.

The Maintaining and Enhancing Hydroelectricity Incentives Program, managed by DOE’s Grid Deployment Office, provides USD 553.6 million in incentive payments to enhance existing hydropower facilities through capital improvements directly related to three main areas: grid resiliency, dam safety, and environmental improvements.

The Hydroelectric Efficiency Improvement Incentives Program, also managed by GDO, provides a total of USD 75 million in incentive payments to owners or operators of existing hydroelectric facilities who may apply for funding to make capital improvements that can increase efficiency by at least 3%.

Axpo Postpones Reservoir Renovation for More Winter Power

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
12 Sep, 2022, 5:30 am

The extensive renovation work at the Gigerwald dam in the Taminatal SG will be suspended immediately and postponed for two years. The postponement is due to the imminent power shortage expected in the upcoming winter. Although the work is critical for the long-term operation of the plant, owing the extreme energy situation the priority will be placed on ensuring the production of up to 160 GWh of energy from the water in the reservoir and recirculation operation.

The Gigerwald dam is part of Kraftwerke Sarganserland, in which Axpo holds a share of 98.5%. The installation was scheduled for extensive renovation this winter and would have required the full drainage of the reservoir. Although the renovation work is necessary for the long-term operation of the plant and cannot be delayed for a longer period, the priority has been placed on utilising the up to 160 GWh of electricity in the winter months to benefit security of supply under the current extreme energy situation. Construction preparations that began in the spring of 2022 have been suspended immediately and renovation work has been postponed until the winter of 2024/25.

Construction work can only take place during the winter because there is less water flow has to be diverted through the construction site. The Gigerwald reservoir will be fully drained in the winter of 2024/25 to ensure that renovation work can be carried out smoothly. The plant is expected to go back into operation in early summer of 2025.

Axpo Announces Further Investments in Grisons Hydropower

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
19 Oct, 2022, 4:53 am

Leading Nordic power supplier Axpo announced that Albula-Landwasser Kraftwerke is replacing the switchgear of its hydropower plants in Filisur and Tiefencastel. Thanks to the renewal, the two power plants will continue to reliably produce renewable energy for the equivalent of around 90,000 four-person households.

The switchgear is the interface between the power plants and the electricity grid. It ensures that the electricity produced can be transported away. The switchgears of the Filisur and Tiefecastel power plants have both been in operation for several decades. In order to ensure reliable electricity production in the long term, ALK has decided to renew these switchgears at a cost of around 13 million Swiss francs. The building permits for the corresponding work have been issued.

ALK is constructing new buildings for the 50-kilovolt switchgear at both power plants. The switchgears will therefore be rebuilt from the ground up. This will enable the power plants to continue producing during the realization phase between August 2023 and May 2024. Electricity production will thus be maintained in winter when Switzerland urgently needs domestic electricity.

ALK is a partner plant of Axpo (75%), EWD Elektrizitätswerk Davos AG (15.74%), the canton of Grisons (5%) and the concession municipalities of Albula/Alvra, Bergün, Filisur and Schmitten (4.26%). ALK's power plants in Filisur (65 megawatts) and Tiefencastel (24 megawatts) as well as the Tischbach small hydropower plant use water from the Albula and Landwasser rivers to produce electricity.

GE to upgrade Don Pedro Hydroelectric Power Plant in California

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
15 Nov, 2022, 1:38 pm

GE Renewable Energy has signed a refurbishment contract with the Turlock Irrigation District to modernize the powerhouse of the Don Pedro hydropower plant in California, which is jointly owned by TID and Modesto Irrigation District. Upon completion of the refurbishment project, the maximum capacity of the facility will increase from 203 MW to approximately 268 MW. This amount of energy is sufficient to meet the energy needed to power approximately 150,000 homes. The new units will increase the power plant's efficiency, operating range and have a design life of 50 years.

The scope of the project includes the replacement of 4 turbines and 3 generators and the repair of one additional generator. The main objective of the refurbishment is to maintain the overall plant equipment reliability for another five decades to come. In addition, the replacement of the units will increase their efficiency and performance in a way that responds to the growing needs of TID and MID customers. This upgrade will also help the Districts accomplish long term clean energy goals, and capture more flexible, fast ramping capacity for grid support.

Beyond providing electricity to the region, the Don Pedro power plant has another important mission. The original dam was built in 1923, with a storage capacity of only 289,000 acre-feet, the original dam held virtually enough water to accommodate farmers’ irrigation needs for a single growing season. Recognizing the need for increased storage to weather multiple dry year periods, the new Don Pedro Project, including the current dam and powerhouse, was built, creating a 2,030,000 acre-feet reservoir, not only providing for irrigation needs but also creating opportunities for recreation, flood control, and increased generation.

Waterpeil

Rio Tinto Completes Kemano Hydropower Project

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
8 Dec, 2022, 4:30 am

Rio Tinto has commissioned a second tunnel to carry water into the Kemano Powerhouse in British Columbia in Canada, marking the end of the Kemano T2 hydropower project. The new, 16-kilometre tunnel was filled up with water and produced its first megawatt of electricity in July 2022 after its construction was completed in May 2022. Both T1 and T2 are now operating together, ensuring the long-term reliability of the power supply for Rio Tinto’s BC Works aluminium smelter in Kitimat and neighbouring communities.

The original tunnel was developed in the 1950s and operated on its own for over 70 years. At the time, a 50-metre long intake stub-tunnel was also built at Tahtsa Lake, but the construction of the second tunnel only started in the early 1990s. The project was then halted in 1995 after 8.4 kilometres, then restarted in 2018 to refurbish the initial portion of the tunnel and complete the last 7.6 kilometres. This final section of the tunnel took 30 months to dig, using a 1,300 tonne tunnel boring machine named tl’ughus by the Cheslatta Carrier Nation after a legendary giant monster snake.

Published on :
14 Dec, 2022, 4:15 am

GE Hydro Solutions was selected by Anhui Jinzhai Pumped Storage Power, one of the divisions of State Grid XinYuan, to supply four new 300 MW pumped storage turbines, generator-motors as well as the balance of plant equipment for the Anhui Jinzhai pumped storage power plant located in the Jinzhai County, Anhui Province, China. The first two units have been successfully delivered to the project, have passed the trial operation period, and are now connected to the grid.

The 1.2 GW project will play a role to help China achieve its goal to build more than 200 pumped storage stations with a combined capacity of 270 gigawatts by 2025 (Source: Bloomberg). The project annual generating capacity represents about 1.4 times the annual household electricity consumption in Jinzhai. Acting as a sustainable large-scale energy storage system, the Jinzhai pumped storage station will save up to 89,500 tons of coal and reduce 179,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

These pumped storage units will act as giant batteries that will help solve grid stability challenges for the province: water is pumped from the lower to the upper reservoir in times of surplus energy and, in times of demand, water from the upper reservoir is released, generating electricity as the water passes through the turbine.

The purchase price for the acquisition is USD 3.6 billion, subject to adjustments.

The terms and conditions of PSA stipulate that the acquisition of TKLP and BRLP is to be closed on or before February 28, 2023, subject to customary closing conditions.

Charbone’s strategy is to acquire its own hydropower plants, modernize and optimize them to increase their production capacity and, consequently, the value of the assets for Charbone and our shareholders, and to further assist Charbone with its deployment of a green hydrogen regional hub in Michigan and other locations.

Charbone plans to develop and construct modular and scalable green hydrogen production facilities in both Wisconsin and Michigan within the next few years. All plants provide land space to accommodate green hydrogen facilities or increase capacities by the automation and modernization of the facilities with newer hydro turbines and other technologies that would allow Charbone USA to produce power at one end and then to transmit its own power via utilities’ power lines, subject to a transmission fee, to a hydrogen production facility in a large industrial or urban center close to end users of such hydrogen.

The Northwoods management and operation teams have agreed to continue to perform their duties under Charbone’s ownership and will work and assist Charbone’s engineering team to implement optimisation, modernization, and automation projects at each of the plants. Charbone aims to be one of the first green hydrogen producers in the Midwestern United States.

Charbone is a Canadian green hydrogen company established in North America. The company’s strategy consists of developing modular and expandable hydrogen facilities.

In line with the planned schedule, all units of the Jinzhai pumped storage power plant have now been successfully connected to grid and completed 15 days of trial operation, by this moment, all units are under commercial operation.

Under the contract signed in 2017, GE Hydro Solutions was selected by Anhui Jinzhai Pumped Storage Power, one of the divisions of State Grid Xin Yuan, to supply four new 300 MW pumped storage turbines, generator-motors as well as the balance of plant equipment for the Anhui Jinzhai pumped storage power plant located in the Jinzhai County, Anhui Province, China. The first two units were connected to the grid in October 2022.

The 1.2 GW Jinzhai hydro power plant project will play a key role in this journey to a stronger energy mix in the country. The project annual generating capacity represents about 1.4 times the annual household electricity consumption in Jinzhai. Acting as a sustainable giant energy storage system, the Jinzhai pumped storage station will save up to 120,000 tons of coal and reduce 240,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
