An embargo on Russia's Norilsk Nickel would hurt West

Reuters reported that an embargo against Norilsk Nickel as part of Western sanctions against Russia would hurt nickel users in Europe and the United States rather than Norilsk itself.

Norilsk, the world's largest producer of the stainless steel ingredient, has not been targeted so far by western measures aimed at punishing Russia for its support of pro Moscow rebels in neighbouring Ukraine.

Mr Patrick Buffet CEO of Eramet said that "Nobody expects sanctions against Russia and Norilsk would affect Norilsk's production since it would sell to China if it couldn't sell elsewhere."

Mr Buffet said that "It's unlikely an embargo by Europe would materialise, because it would be shooting itself in the foot, since Norilsk could ship its production to Asia, creating a shortage in Europe and oversupply in Asia. The consequence would be a jump in physical premiums in Europe and a discount in Asia."

He said that the most likely scenario for western restrictions against Norilsk would be a US only embargo, which would push up nickel premiums there but not hit the world market. Nickel prices have already rallied this year after a ban by Indonesia on nickel ore exports curbed supply to China.

Mr Buffet said that a joint embargo by the United States and Europe against Norilsk would contribute to that rally, but the biggest impact on world prices is likely to come from an expected upturn in Chinese demand.

He said that Chinese stocks of Indonesian nickel ore are estimated to have fallen by half in the past five months, suggesting they could run dry within the next few months and prompt a jump in Chinese import demand.

Nickel rebounds as China data signal improving demand outlook

Bloomberg reported that nickel rebounded from the biggest monthly drop since November as stronger than expected manufacturing data in China, the largest metals consumer, signaled improving demand.

The metal for delivery in three months climbed as much as 1% on the London Metal Exchange to USD 18,688 per tonne and traded at USD 18,650 at Hong Kong. Nickel dropped 2.4% and fell 2.8% in July.

The National Bureau of Statistics and China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said that China’s Purchasing Managers’ Index, a gauge of manufacturing demand, expanded in July at the fastest pace in more than two years to 51.7.

The HSBC Plc and Markit Economics PMI final July reading was also 51.7. A level above 50 signals expansion.

Mr Chae Unsoo, a metals trader at Korea Exchange Bank Futures Limited said that “The PMI data is good news for metals demand in China. The PMI will help support the price.”

Russian nickel sanctions to affect nickel price

According to the head of French mining group Eramet, the supplies of the nickel will be disrupted by sanctions and will affect Europe and the US.

However, nobody expects sanctions against Russia and Norilsk would affect Norilsk’s production, according to the company. If it happened, Norilsk could only export to Asian countries including China and it could cause shortages in European markets as well.

However, the sanction on Norilsk is likely only to the US and it would push up nickel premiums.

Indonesia ban on nickel ore and bauxite exports to stay - Officials

Reuters reported that Indonesia has no plans to wind back a seven month old ban on exports of unprocessed nickel ore and bauxite that has led to billions of dollars in planned investments in smelters.

Indonesia previously the world's top exporter of nickel ore and a major bauxite producer effectively halted all but processed metal shipments in January in an effort to force miners to build smelters, winning the country bigger returns from exports of its mineral resources.

Mr Chairul Tanjung chief economic minister of Indonesia said that “Last month the government allowed a handful of firms producing partially processed minerals such as copper concentrate, including Freeport McMoRan Inc, to resume exports. However, the same rationale does not apply to unprocessed exports of nickel ore and bauxite.”

Mr Tanjung said that "Nickel is different because if you are smelting in Indonesia the added value is much higher than copper. Because of that it's a separate issue. The government also lacks the power to intervene on nickel and bauxite as the ban stemmed from a law passed by parliament in 2009. There is no way for us to go against the law. The president could be impeached by parliament if we breach the law.”

The January ban took a chunk out of Indonesia's export revenues just as the country was grappling with a sizable trade deficit. It also put thousands out of work as mines shut, damaging the country's attractiveness for investment.

However, Mr Tanjung pointed to recent data from the country's investment coordinating board that showed close to USD 8 billion was being spent to build three alumina refineries and two ferronickel projects.

He said that "This is creating investment in Indonesia. More projects were expected to follow which would help reduce the country's trade and current account deficits.”

Indonesia nickel rally spurs mine restarts amid ore ban

Bloomberg reported that Indonesia’s ban on nickel ore exports is resonating globally as prices climb to the highest since 2012, prompting companies from Avebury Nickel Mines Limited to Poseidon Nickel Limited to restart operations at idled mines.

According to OAO GMK Norilsk Nickel, avebury, based in Perth, plans to reopen a deposit in Tasmania six years after it was mothballed. Poseidon is preparing to resume production at a mine in Western Australia, while Panoramic Resources Limited may restart mining at its Copernicus deposit in the same state. More producers globally may reactivate facilities as prices extend gains.

Nickel, used to make stainless steel, rallied as much as 56% this year to USD 21,625 per tonne after Indonesia halted ore exports in January to compel investment in local processing plants. While the restarted mines such as Avebury’s will add to supplies, the additional production won’t be enough to prevent the global market from dropping into a deficit, with Goldman Sachs Group Inc to BNP Paribas SA forecasting higher prices.

China production of stainless crude steel up by 21pct in H1

Stainless Steel Council of China Special Steel Enterprises Association announced China's production of stainless crude steel in the H1 (January to June) of 2014 was 10.687 million tonnes up by 21.2% from the year earlier period.

The production of all types of steel was up from the year earlier period, which arose especially from the drastic increase in the production of nickel containing products (300 series).

The rough estimate on the quarterly production shows that the production of nickel containing products in the period from April to June made an all time high and the production of manganese containing products (200 series) also was up from the prior period. On the other hand, chrome containing products (400 series) was slightly down.

Besides, this announcement also reports the import and export volumes of stainless steel with its apparent consumption and the details are as shown in the table below.

Stainless Steel performs after more than 30 years - The Thames Barrier

The Thames Barrier stands guard astride the river in a location which is classified as corrosive because temperature and humidity levels are sufficient to activate salt deposits on a regular basis.

Austenitic grade 316 stainless steel was considered to be the only material which would provide a sufficient level of corrosion resistance to fulfil a planned 50 year design life. Its smooth matt finish was developed for severe conditions such as those found around coastlines.

Today, Aperam UGINOX MATT provides just such a surface. Its smoothness minimises corrosive deposit accumulation while increasing the effectiveness of self-cleaning by natural rain washing. As a result, the dramatic curves of the barrier retain both their attractive appearance and functionality after more than 30 years.

TEX update stainless crude steel production by major SUS mills in August

The stainless crude steel production by 6 major stainless steel mills in August 2014 was 280,821 tonnes down by 5.5% from 297,115 tonnes of the prior month. This also represented a decrease of 8.7% versus the year earlier month (307,523 tonnes).

In August, all the major stainless steel mills other than Chiba Works of JFE Steel Corporation had a low production, which was a result of being affected much by the increased electricity rate and the production adjustment in addition to the production curtailment in the summer time.
