It sickened me yesterday to see security personnel—including members of the National Guard—forcibly and violently clear a path through Lafayette Square to accommodate the president's visit outside St. John's Church. I have to date been reticent to speak out on issues surrounding President Trump's leadership, but we are at an inflection point, and the events of the past few weeks have made it impossible to remain silent.

Whatever Trump's goal in conducting his visit, he laid bare his disdain for the rights of peaceful protest in this country, gave succor to the leaders of other countries who take comfort in our domestic strife, and risked further politicizing the men and women of our armed forces.

There was little good in the stunt.

While no one should ever condone the violence, vandalism, and looting that has exploded across our city streets, neither should anyone lose sight of the larger and deeper concerns about institutional racism that have ignited this rage.

As a white man, I cannot claim perfect understanding of the fear and anger that African Americans feel today. But as someone who has been around for a while, I know enough—and I’ve seen enough—to understand that those feelings are real and that they are all too painfully founded.

We must, as citizens, address head-on the issue of police brutality and sustained injustices against the African American community. We must, as citizens, support and defend the right—indeed, the solemn obligation—to peacefully assemble and to be heard. These are not mutually exclusive pursuits.

And neither of these pursuits will be made easier or safer by an overly aggressive use of our military, active duty or National Guard. The United States has a long and, to be fair, sometimes troubled history of using the armed forces to enforce domestic laws. The issue for us today is not whether this authority exists, but whether it will be wisely administered.

I remain confident in the professionalism of our men and women in uniform. They will serve with skill and with compassion. They will obey lawful orders. But I am less confident in the soundness of the orders they will be given by this commander in chief, and I am not convinced that the conditions on our streets, as bad as they are, have risen to the level that justifies a heavy reliance on military troops. Certainly, we have not crossed the threshold that would make it appropriate to invoke the provisions of the Insurrection Act.

Furthermore, I am deeply worried that as they execute their orders, the members of our military will be co-opted for political purposes.

Even in the midst of the carnage we are witnessing, we must endeavor to see American cities and towns as our homes and our neighborhoods. They are not “battle spaces” to be dominated, and must never become so.

We must ensure that African Americans—indeed, all Americans—are given the same rights under the Constitution, the same justice under the law, and the same consideration we give to members of our own family. Our fellow citizens are not the enemy, and must never become so.

Too many foreign and domestic policy choices have become militarized; too many military missions have become politicized.

This is not the time for stunts. This is the time for leadership.

Dat demonstraties gepaard gaan met brandstichting en plunderingen wordt door Trump uitgebuit :

Trump legt de blaam bij Antifa als linkse groepering op een buiten proportionele wijze.
Het aandeel van de extreem rechtse groepen noemt hij in het geheel niet.

Trump geeft een politieke uitleg maar vergeet een afgewogen objectief oordeel te vellen, over hoe hij deze uitwassen wil aanpakken.
Trump gooit olie op het vuur.

Ja hoor, verleg alles maar op Trump. Antifa is niet links, maar extreem-links en vertoont zeker kenmerken van een terroristische organisatie. Het is nieuwe fascisme. Hun kandidaat Bernie Sanders is aan de kant geschoven door de Democraten, en willen ze met grof geweld en intimidaties hun politieke doelen verwezenlijken. En dat is de definitie van fascisme.

Dat artikel in de Trouw bagatelliseert hun rol nogal. Gewelddadig extreem-links is in Amerika veel groter dan extreem-rechts. En ze hebben de media achter zich.

Now our president finally decided to leave the safety of his White House bunker and address the nation in person instead of through his Twitter account. Yet rather than choosing to de-escalate the tensions or deliver a message of unity that recognizes the nation's pain about the ongoing racism and victimization of our fellow citizens at the hands of the police, he instead decided to fan the flames. The president of the United States yesterday threatened to amass the military against the protesting citizens and to send armed soldiers into our states, whether the states want them or not. We cannot underestimate the danger in his threats.”

He said "When a leader threatens to use the military to quiet our nation's voice of protest, to quell our First Amendment rights, then we are all on shaky ground. We cannot tolerate this sort of intimidation, for those who would seek to quiet even a single voice will find any excuse to do so again and again.”

He added "Our labor movement does not and has never supported the destruction of property that unfortunately has taken place under the cover of these lawful and righteous protests.”

Wat heel raar overkomt is die Republikeinse zus van Pelosi, judge Pirro. Die is rechter. Geen dommeling. Maar die heeft kritiek op de democraten. De blue states doen te weinig tegen de protesten. Geen enkel woord van haar of het beperken van het recht op demonstratie door het inzetten van het leger een goed idee is. Ze laat eigenlijk de verantwoordelijkheid bij Obama. Die hoor je niet zegt ze, terwijl het onder zijn leiding net zo erg was. Ze vraagt , waar is Oprah ? waarom horen we die niet ? Dat is toch bezopen dat je een ex-president en een talk show presentatrice dit probeert aan te smeren. Ze hebben toch zelf de controle, ze hebben toch de macht, laat de president het volk toespreken. Maar dat zegt ze niet.
Overigens, een bijzonder slecht idee, Oprah en Obama een statement te laten geven, Trump stemmers blijven op hem stemmen, maar twijfelaars luisteren eerder naar de voice of reason. In the land of the free.

ik zou daar graag iets meer over weten. Heb je een link naar een boek of artikel in een krant of tijdschrift waarin geloofwaardige en bij voorkeur ook nog verifieerbare cijfers worden gegeven over de grootte van beide groepen, en eventueel ook wat aantoonbaar bewijs dat 'de media' achter Antifa staat?

Mr. Barr was concerned about demonstrations near the White House over the weekend that had resulted in a small basement fire at St. John’s and graffiti on the Treasury Department headquarters, so he resolved to push the security perimeter farther from the mansion.

Reinforcements were summoned. Just before noon, an alert went out to every Washington-area agent with Homeland Security Investigations, a division of ICE, telling them to prepare to assist with any demonstration, according to an email labeled with a “high” severity. The F.B.I. deployed its elite hostage rescue team, highly armed and trained agents more accustomed to arresting dangerous suspects than dealing with riots. And ICE deployed its “special response teams” to protect agency facilities and be on call for more.

But others were reluctant to help. Mr. Trump was so aggressive on the call with governors that when Gov. Ralph Northam of Virginia received a request to send up to 5,000 of his state’s National Guard troops, he grew concerned. His staff contacted Ms. Bowser’s office and discovered that the mayor had not even been notified of the request. At that point, Mr. Northam turned the White House down. Similarly, Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York called off buses of National Guard troops that were to head to Washington.

By midafternoon on Monday, protesters had gathered again on H Street at the north side of Lafayette Square, this time peacefully. The Rev. Gini Gerbasi, the rector of St. John’s Church in Georgetown and a former assistant rector at St. John’s, arrived around 4 p.m. with cases of water for the demonstrators. Joining her on the church patio were about 20 clergy members who passed out snacks.

Trump heeft groot gelijk.

Ik merk in de pers en op TV verwoede pogingen om Trumps streven om wat te doen tegen de wantoestanden van plundering en brandstichting in een kwaad daglicht te stellen. Trump zou "het leger tegen betogers" willen inzetten. Dat wil hij natuurlijk niet. Hij wil het leger inzetten tegen gewelddadige plunderaars, brandstichters en vernielers. De staten van de VS hebben in een week tijd de orde niet kunnen herstellen met hun politie. Waarom zou Trump dan het leger niet laten ingrijpen? Hij reageert zoals een goed huisvader moet reageren als het huis wordt gevandaliseerd en in brand wordt gestoken.
Waarom geven de "main stream" nieuwsbronnen in vredesnaam zo'n kwaadaardige draai aan de feiten? De Amerikanen snappen heel goed wat Trump wil en ik denk dat zowat alle fatsoenlijke Amerikanen daar achter staan.
