Nvidia working with Foxconn on electric cars, debuts new graphics cards at CES

Nvidia (NVDA) rolled into CES 2023 with a slew of major announcements on Tuesday including news that it is teaming up with Foxconn, which will begin manufacturing electric vehicles based on Nvidia’s Drive Hyperion platform. The company also announced new graphics chips for laptops and improvements to its GeForce Now game streaming platform.

The automotive news doesn’t mean that Nvidia is getting into building vehicles themselves. Rather, Foxconn, which is expanding its manufacturing capabilities into building electric vehicles for third-party automakers such as Lordstown Motors, will use Nvidia’s Drive Hyperion platform to build cars.

Drive Hyperion is a reference and development that consists of a suite of software and hardware meant to help automakers speed up the production of autonomous vehicles.

“Our partnership with Foxconn will provide OEMs developing intelligent driving solutions with a world-class supplier that can scale for volume manufacturing of the Nvidia Drive Orin platform,” Rishi Dhall, vice president of automotive at Nvidia, said in a statement.

“Foxconn’s decision to also use the Drive Hyperion sensor suite for its EVs will help accelerate their path to production without compromising safety, reliability or quality,” Dhall added.

Nvidia has been increasingly diving into the automotive market by building out the sensors and software automakers will need to ensure their vehicles can eventually navigate the world without the need for driver intervention.

The company’s automotive efforts, however, still make up a small amount of its overall revenue. Of Nvidia’s $5.93 billion in revenue in Q3, the automotive group pulled in just $251 million. Its gaming and data center businesses, meanwhile, raked in $1.57 billion and $3.83 billion, respectively.

Outside of its deal with Foxconn, Nvidia also debuted its latest laptop graphics chips ranging from the entry-level RTX 4050 chip to the high-end RTX 4090 card. According to the company, laptops running on RTX 40 series chips should offer up to four times the performance in games like “Cyberpunk 2077,” while providing three times the energy efficiency of Nvidia’s prior generation chips.

I-Navi Systems, een dochteronderneming voor de ontwikkeling van mobiliteit en zelfrijdende kaarten, heeft een officieel partnerschap getekend met TomTom (Amsterdam Stock Exchange: TOM2), Europa's nummer 1 kaartleverancier en locatie-informatietechnologiebedrijf, voor Digital Cockpit.

Door dit contract vervult INAVI Systems de rollen van 'Service Provider', 'App Developer' en 'System integrator' in het TomTom digital cockpit partnersysteem en voltooit TomTom in Korea. Het is van plan gerelateerde ontwikkelings- en zakelijke samenwerking uit te voeren, waaronder het leveren van navigatie voor de digitale cockpitservice voor auto's.

TomTom's Digital Cockpit is 's werelds eerste op Android gebaseerde open platform dat autofabrikanten, softwareontwikkelingsbedrijven en contentproviders in staat stelt software te ontwikkelen voor kant-en-klare voertuigtoepassingen. Door deze samenwerking kreeg I-Navi Systems de kans om een ??navigatieoplossing die is geoptimaliseerd voor de huishoudelijke serviceomgeving toe te passen op de digitale cockpit en deze te introduceren bij wereldwijde autofabrikanten.

Daarnaast zijn de twee bedrijven van plan om de gezamenlijk ontwikkelde digitale cockpit van TomTom tentoon te stellen op de CES (Customer Electronics Shows) van 2023. Via deze tentoonstelling is I-Navi Systems van plan zijn navigatieservice gekoppeld aan de digitale cockpit van TomTom te introduceren en te demonstreren voor verschillende wereldwijde klanten van afgewerkte voertuigen.

De digitale cockpit van TomTom is uitgerust met 'Extreme Air 3D', een live-action 3D-luchtkaart die is geïmplementeerd op basis van high-definition luchtfotografische gegevens, de kracht van I-Navi Systems, en ondersteunt meer realistische en intuïtieve routebegeleiding. Het is ook mogelijk om themakaarten zoals Cartoon en Natuur te selecteren op basis van de voorkeur van de bestuurder. De belangrijkste functies zijn ? aangepaste routebegeleiding ? regelmatige informatie over rijstroken ? verkeersoverzichtbalk voor het controleren van drukke trajecten ? uitbreiding van due diligence op kruispunten. Bovendien worden niet alleen het voertuignavigatiescherm, maar ook de functie voor het zoeken naar bestemmingen door middel van head-up display (HUD)-koppeling en spraakherkenningsservice ondersteund.

Autonomous driving startup 42dot will spend around 6 billion won to acquire 10% of the shares in INAVI Systems, TheElec has learned.

The startup is making the investment to secure a stable supply of high precision map data from INAVI Systems, a subsidiary of Thinkware that operates its driving navigation service INAVI.

INAVI Systems is also planning to procure investment from other companies besides 42dot in its latest funding round, people familiar with the matter said.

Thinkware controls 89.9% of shares of INAVI Systems which it acquired in 2013.

INAVI Systems offers its map platform to companies. In May, won the order to lead a national project to develop Level 4 autonomous driving technology.

42dot was founded by ex-Naver employee Song Chang-hyun in 2019 and received 2 billion won in seed funding from Hyundai Motor.

Song was named Transportation-as-a-Service president of Hyundai Motor Group, a position he occupies with the CEO position of 42dot.

In July, 42dot said it will collaborate with INAVI Systems and NHN to develop an urban mobility operating system for autonomous vehicles, robots and drones going forward.

Hyundai Motor’s subsidiary Hyundai Autoever is also working on an autonomous driving solution that uses map data.

Spokespeople for 42dot and INAVI Systems declined to comment on the matter.

De omzet van de kaartendivisie bedroeg 19,6 miljard KRW, inclusief de kaartplatformactiviteiten 10,3 miljard KRW boeken, een stijging van 27,6%. Vorig jaar begon het bedrijf serieus met het leveren van zijn eigen kaartgegevens aan verschillende markten voor mobiliteitsdiensten, zoals het bellen van's en het rijden met chauffeurs via zijn dochteronderneming I-Navi Systems.

Het bedrijf ontwikkelt een uiterst nauwkeurige kaart voor zelfrijdend rijden op basis van zijn eigen kaartgegevens en is van plan op basis hiervan een bedrijf voor het genereren van inkomsten te realiseren.

While Google and its parent company Alphabet were combining its Maps and Waze teams, its street view and AR capabilities keep getting more sophisticated, leaving its potential competitors in the dust, even after it was cited for selling users’ location data.

That domination is so great that Google Maps has mapped more than 220 countries and territories, according to the company. Maps is the most-downloaded GPS app by far, and it’s not even close.

Though TomTom’s market share has seriously depleted since highs in 2008, the company has survived against Google Maps with deals in countries where the top performing app wasn’t available.

Last month, the company announced a new maps platform.

The world of maps today is pretty siloed. Everyone who is making a commercial map—whether they admit it or not—is starting to see that there are limits to what any one company can do, no matter how big or powerful or well funded they are.

Overture’s standardization and interoperable base map may end up being fundamental to bringing geospatial information from the world together.
